Amoxicillin Dosage For 6 Y.o.

What is the recommend Amoxicillin dosage for a 6 yr old who is 46 lbs? My son is 6 yrs old and has a bad ear infection in one ear. Doctor gave him 500 mg of Amoxicillin 2 times/day, 2 teaspoon (10mg). He weighs 46 lbs. I just think it seems like a lot for his age. Please let me know if it's ok? Thank you!

Hi Inna,

According to an article I found on the site for Livestrong, kids between the ages of 2 months and 6 years old are usually given 80 to 90 mgs of amoxicillin per kilogram of body weight per day. This is supposed to be divided up into two or three doses and is generally prescribed for about 10 days.

Every child may react differently though...so unfortunately I can't say for sure whether this dosing schedule is right for your son. That question seems like it'll be better suited for his doctor, if you want to play it safe.
