Amoxicillin Dosage Child

Hi my son is 6 years old and has pink eye. I took him to urgent care because I couldn't get into his normal pediatrician before they closed for the day. He has also been having pain behind one of his ears/kind of on his jaw line. I told the doctor this and he checked his ears saying he did not have an ear infection but that he believes it could be mastoiditis. This concerns me but the doc acted like it isn't a big deal. He prescribed eye drops for pink eye and amoxicillin 250mg/5ml suspect 100ml and told me to give him 17.5ml 2x a day. He only weighs 46 pounds. I feel like this is way too much for his age and weight. Is this amount too much or is it normal for his diagnosis? Please help!

You should give him the dosage the doctor has prescribed. Antibiotics are usually dosed according to the type and severity of the infection.

The FDA does warn that it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash.

Mastoiditis is an infection and inflammation of the mastoid bone, behind the ear. It is very important to eradicate it, so he doesn't suffer permanent damage to his hearing.
