my Dr just gave me a prescription for amoxicillin two 500 milligram pills every 12 hours that equals out to 2000 milligrams of amoxicillin a day for strep throat for 10 days. My throat is also very swollen I just thought that seems excessive though.

Hello, Clueless! How are you feeling?
That is pretty high, but it does have to be adjusted for the severity of the infection and there are occasions where 1gram or 2grams a day may be necessary.

Double check with your doctor to be certain, but it might be an appropriate amount for this with as bad as you said it was.
The side effects will likely be more severe and can include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
