Hi Ann,
If your doctor didn't recommend that you give this medication to your child, then I imagine the safest thing to do would be to listen to him/her. I have read that it isn't safe to give a child under the age of 2 any cough/cold medication. At your child's age, there is no way to know how medications could effect her system and her growth. Have you tried giving her a hot bath or used a humidifier in her room? The steam may help to loosen up her cough.
