Altosec Side Effects

Hi. My 90 year old Aunt suffered food poisoning a few months ago and was hospitalized. She has taken a daily laxative for years- which worked effectively and predictably.

She has been put on Altosec 20 for months now - her bowel movements are now more urgent and frequent. Is this a side effect or an intolerance of the Altosec?

Since the food poisoning, she is also taking a daily vitamin - DS-24- vitamins/minerals including iodine 140ug, 20mg calcium, choline 5mg and molybdenum.

Is the Altosec 20mg perhaps too strong? Not compatible with some listed minerals?

Yes, there is a chance that it's due to the Altosec, it has been known to cause diarrhea as a side effect, as reported by the U.S. FDA. Other side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, stomach pain and flatulence.

However, some minerals can also cause diarrhea, so taking them may be making it worse.

Has she consulted her doctor?

How many bowel movements does she have daily?
