Allergic To Penicillin Can I Take 500 Mg Amoxicillin

500 my amoxicilin. Can I take this for my spider bite that's now infected and for infection in my gums. I'm also allergic to sulfa I will not go to Dr or hospital I'm allergic to penicillin I WA 12 when i.broke out in hives and was dizzy. But that's it. Can I take amoxicilin

Hi Andrea,

According to The University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine (UMKC), people who are allergic to penicillin may also have a cross-reaction to amoxicillin because they are both in the same family of antibiotics (known as 'beta-lactam' antibiotics). So in general, I would say it's not recommended.

Perhaps it'd be best to ask your doctor about trying some other type of antibiotic altogether, such as:

Tetracyclines
Macrolides
Fluoroquinolones
Aminoglycosides
Cephalosporins

Note: although uncommon, some cross-sensitivities to cephalosporins have been reported among those allergic to penicillin.
