After How Many Years Will Oxicodone 5mg Lose Their Potency?

I ha e an old bottle of oxicodone 5mg that I have been keeping for a rainy day. Well, I just had surgery and the pills are now almost 7 years old. Can I still use them? I live in the desert, so it's very dry.
Thanks,

Hi Alice,

While I usually don't condone the use of expired medication, there are several reports (namely one from Harvard University as well as one from the LA Times Newspaper) confidently stating that many medications still retain up to 90% of the active ingredients after 28 to 40 years past their official expiration dates. Hydrocodone was among those medications listed in the LA Times study, and even though Oxycodone was not, my understanding is that it probably still works just fine depending on how it was stored.

So in cases like this it seems as though you will have to be your own best judge, but if "full" efficacy is important to you, you can't go wrong with a new prescription.

Hope this helps!
