Advil For Headache With Xarelto
UpdatedI've had a migraine for almost 2 days. Past issues with these headaches are typically only resolved by taking ibuprofen. Problem is I am taking xarelto and I was told to only take Tylenol if I need pain relief. I have been taking Tylenol and it is not helping one bit. I thought my doctor said "occasionally" no more than 600mg of Advil would be okay, but I can't seem to reach anyone on the weekend. Please help!

Hi Kyle,
According to The University of Maryland Medical Center drug interaction tool, there is a high interaction potential between Advil and Xarelto. They go on to note that using an anticoagulant with a NSAID is generally not recommended, but because it may be needed in certain cases, you and your doctor should work together to find an appropriate dosing regimen in order to reduce risk of side effects such as easy bruising, nose bleeds or bleeding gums, or having blood in urine or stool...
On the other hand, Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Xarelto aren't turning up with any drug interaction warnings.
You can plug in the names of your medications in the link below to cross reference this information:

Acetaminophen belongs to the drug class of analgesics and antipyretics, so I could see why your doctor suggested it over other options, but as far as Advil is concerned, I think it would probably be in your own best interest for safety reasons to double check with the doctor first in regards to dosing. In the interm I hope you can manage to find some alternative form of relief be it through massage, meditation or other non-conventional means.
