Hello All,
I am not glad that you are having issues, but if am so glad that you post, because I am having the same issue with my 14 year old son. He was taking the blue and white 15 mg Amphetamine salts ER for Narcolepsy with Cataplexy. This is his very first time on the medication, IT WORKED! Well after the first 30 day prescription, good old CVS decided to take it upon themselves and change it to the orange pill, same miller grams, but the name on the bottle is Dextroamp-amphetamine ER. This dose not work at all. My son is constantly falling asleep, and the Cataplexy has complete control over him, causing him to fall at least four to five times a day. Can anyone please tell me what is the difference between the two medications, and any suggestions on how I can fix it.

You have. no idea what you are talking about, you can't even spell the drug correctly!
You should not be telling this woman - or anyone - that her son "should not be taking "adderol" (sic) to stay awake." Her son's DOCTOR, whom I presume has an MD degree at the very least, and who may also be a specialist in either sleep disorders or neurological disorders, or both (because Narcolepsy IS both) prescribed Adderal for his condition. You are obviously not a doctor, and even if you were, you haven't examined this child nor reviewed his medical records as his doctor has. And for the record, Adderal IS a medication that is indicated for both ADD/ADHD AND Narcolepsy, according to the FDA and the website of the manufacturer of the actual brand name drug, ie, Adderal. Most insurance companies decide which drug a patient can take for a given condition, and many times they override a doctor's choice of drug, but the amphetamine class of drugs are frequently the ONLY ones they will allow. Since Adderal is a drug in the amphetamine group, it is indeed prescribed very commonly for Narcolepsy, although again, insurance companies very rarely pay for name brand drugs, and when they do, the patient must pay an extremely high co-pay for name brand drugs. The bottom line is, your statement is incorrect factually as well as rude and unhelpful.
I'm sorry but you need to read before you answer. As well as have the proper knowledge to answer. That is not all what she stated nor has a thing to do with the question she asked. I'm sorry but I have a major pet peeve for people who do not pay attention and go off on an answer that holds judgement, because you are not the child's doctor nor God to judge anyone.
Verwon, thank you so much for your response, I have been a bit busy, sorry I am just getting back. He is doing a little better, his doctor increased his dosage from 15 to 20mg. It is keeping him awake all day which allows him to go to school and conduct after school activities. I will keep your suggestion in mind for future issues. Thank God for good insurance. This is all very new to me, so if you have any information or websites that you may think would be helpful to me, please let me know. Thanks again. Worried Mom
Worried Mom, how is he doing?
There can be some slight differences from one generic to another, which does cause problems for some people.
If you have insurance, you may want to ask his doctor about prescribing it as brand being medically necessary, that way you can avoid such problems in the future.
Sydnee, narcolepsy is a medical disorder in which the person falls asleep randomly and it has to be treated with medications such as this, this is further complicated by his cataplexy. The treatment options are limited and such medications are necessary in these types of cases.
Are there any other questions or concerns?
Your son should not be taking adderol to keep him awake. And there shouldn't be a difference at all.
