I have shingles and was given this cream. I complained about the nerve pain in my back and side but on the bottle it says to put on the lesions. That's not what is hurting me. Should I send it back (it's unopened) or try to rub where I'm hurting so much?

Yes, this would be specifically to treat the lesions, since it has the antiviral Acyclovir in it. The other two ingredients are Lidocaine and Gabapentin to help with pain. Its typical side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include skin redness, dryness, itching and irritation.
It would be best to check with your doctor, before using it on other areas.
