Abscess Swelling

I got an abscess as a result of a piece of a tooth breaking, and it was close to the root. When I initially went to the dentist, the abscess wasn't too big at all, the doctor gave me 500mg amoxicillin to take 3 times a day, and scheduled me for a root canal in two weeks. I was taking the amoxicillin for 3 days and didn't notice any changes, and the abscess & swelling got bigger and hard and hot to touch. I went back to the dentist to let them know the amoxicillin wasn't doing anything for me, to see if they can prescribe me another stronger antibiotic. They did not prescribe me another antibiotic, but instead told me I need to finish the amoxicillin in order to see any changes, and just prescribed me 800mg ibuprofen to take along with the amoxicillin. What I wanted to know is would taking the amoxicillin and the ibuprofen together help with the swelling? Also I'll be done with the amoxicillin on Monday, but after that I still have to wait another week until they perform the root canal; At this point I go ask the doctor for another week round of amoxicillin to keep the infection from coming back before the root canal is performed? Or should I go to anther dentist and see of I can get treatment for it sooner?

Hello, Kris! How are you? Has there been any change?

Generally, if an antibiotic is working, you shouldn't see any worsening after taking it for a full 24 hours and you should start to see improvement after taking it for a full 3 days, according to the NIH. Thus, if there's been no change, you may need to try a different one, or take it for a longer period of time.

As to seeing the dentist, if the infection is still actively present, they will not be able to numb the tooth to do the necessary work, which can be very painful, so it is best to wait.
