A Pathologist As Only Doctor At Methadone Clinic

At my clinic in Michigan the regular doctor is no longer there. He was an addiction medicine specialist and did general practiceprimary care. The new regular doctor is only a pathologist, and stated during my 60 day evaluation today that he hasn't treated anyone in 35 years. My question is is this doctor qualified to be the only doctor treating patients at the methadone clinic?

As long as he has been trained in treating with it, regardless of whether or not he has been practicing for awhile, then yes, he can do so. The laws don't require that the doctor be an addiction specialist, just that they have the proper licenses and have been trained in treating with Methadone.

A doctor could have stopped practicing for 50 years, then do the training and go into Methadone addiction and maintenance treatment.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

If you aren't sure what his qualifications are, you do have the right to ask.
