Xtampza Er Users Effectiveness (Page 5)

I need ppl who have tried the new Xtampza er med to tell me if it works the same as oxycontin? I need to switch so I wanted to know the strength of the new med in comparison.
Re: Feeling overwhelmed (# 103)
I have been on xtampsa for almost three months now. I started out taking two 35 mg capsules that were not working long enough. My doctor has put me on 3 per day, one every 8 hours and it works good. I was on two 40 mg oxycontins and my current dosage of xtampza feels about the same as the oxy dosage now. I would recommend taking them every 8 hours instead of every 12. Good luck, I hope they work out for you. The withdrawals will actually go away once you get the right dosage of xtampsa.
Have been on the Xtampza ER 18 for 2 months now along with 10mg oxycodone IR. I was taking 10mg every 6 hours for 5years. I am finding managing my pain difficult. For the first time I found out what withdrawal was like after missing a dose and taking it 7 hours late. Very frightening! It’s not controlling my pain and I don’t know what to do. After reading here I did find out that fatty food is supposed to help so will be trying that. I’m hoping my Dr. will increase the dosage of Xtampza because the goal is not to need the IR meds. I’m finding myself in more pain which seems absurd as I’m taking more medication than before. Obviously it must show I’m not very savvy about all this. I don’t expect to feel like a teenager again. I would just like to be able to get off the couch and do dishes and cook meals and enjoy the company of my family. Thank you to all of you for writing about your experiences. I don’t tell anyone including family about my meds. And don’t know anyone else well enough to speak to about this. I’m not even sure how much to say to my Dr.
Any advice?
Re: CiaoBella (# 12)
Oh my! I could have added my name to your post! I'm exactly in the same boat with you. I've taken Oxytocin 80 three times a day for 10 years without needing to change a thing with dosage. It works well for me and I'm able to have a life with my family and do my normal activities. I DONT want to have to eat at given times in order to be on this medication for it to work well.
Why is it that we ALL have to make these changes? For those of us who don't misuse, abuse and do well on Oxytocin being forced to find another medication for chronic pain feels like re-inventing the wheel all over again! It took my doctor and me several trials and months of figuring out the perfect medication, strength and schedule to get the right balance for me. I am feeling powerless with these changes! They'll sleep well at night and while many will be suffering with pain.I am not looking forward to what's ahead until I am up and "rolling" again!
Re: MrRyan (# 99)
Thank you so much for your response. I will absolutely keep you updated. When you say something fatty, does it have to be a meal or would something like a half of a peanut butter sandwich be enough fat? My Dr. actually told me I didn't need to eat with it but the advice from Xtampza directly says to eat for it to work properly. I am sorry for asking such silly questions but I really am so blown away that the Dr decided to do this to me right before the holidays. I do remain hopefull that I have better pain coverage. I wasn't crashing with Fentanyl but I've been having more breakthrough pain so here I am.
Re: Damage (# 97)
I have been on Xtampza for two months now. I would say for me the dosage is a little too low; as I am using all of my break through meds throughout the month. I am not saying it is not helpful, just that it’s not as effective. Perhaps I can talk to the pm clinic and see if we can switch to every 8 instead of every 12. My doctors have been pretty good. Considering I have diffuse chronic pain from CIDP and a crush injury in my spine.
Re: BethB (# 98)
Hello Beth, I think your transition will be ok. For me personally when I switched they started me on way to Low of a dose of xtampza so I had pretty bad withdrawls but once he moved me to 36mg every 12 hours I was good to go. Over time I think you will like this better. One thing I noticed when I was on 75mcg of fentanyl I had bad crashes and fatigue and on the last day before I changed my patch I was n pain and exausted. For me it seemed like the patch worked great for the first 24hrs then tappered off and by the last day I was half sick and exausted. I like the xtampza because its more consistant. If you would, could you keep me updated. You are the first person that I have spoke with that is taking very similar dosages to what I did in the past on fentanyl and also currently xtampza. My advice to you is eat something before you take your xtampza. The fattier the food the better. I have found the more fat content the food has I get a better longer and consistant dose of pain management. Let me know if you have any questions I am happy to help. Good luck in your switch. I think you will be ok. Take care Beth. I look forward to hearing back from you.
Re: MrRyan (# 87)
Hi MrRyan, I am just getting ready to switch from 75 Fentanyl every 3 days to Xtampza 36 every 12 hours and I am so worried that it won't be able to touch my pain. I just lowered my Fentanyl from 100 mic to 75 3 weeks ago and now pain management hits me with this. I see that it did work for you, was hoping to hear that it's still working and that there were no withdrawals. Thank you so much for any help you can give me.
Re: Kay (# 96)
Hi Kay, I was on Oxycontin 40 mg twice a day for about 6 years. My insurance quit covering it so they switched me to xtampza. I started with one 36mg every 12 hours and they weren't lasting long enough. I am now taking them every 8 hours and they seem to be working good. I do take it after meals or right before. Hope they work for you. Definitely try every 8 hours instead of every 12.Good luck Kay... Pain sucks!!
Re: Damage (# 90)
Hi, I am curious of you found the 8 hour dosing more effective than every 12. I have been on xtampza, and have never used OxyContin so have nothing to compare it too, other than the MS Contin which after 8 years simply wasn't working well. I like you have found the xtampza to be effective, how ever, notice it doesn't last as long as they say it should. Can I ask if you take it with or with out food and what type of effectiveness are you seeing at the hours apart... presage.
Thanks for any light you can shed on the dosages that work..

Re: CiaoBella (# 12)
Iam with United health care also they do suck makeing me take xtampza it all pure greed.
We all need to stop payments to uhc .
Hi I have tried it. I was on 30 mg OxyContin 3times day and switched to 40 mg Xtamza twice day. It wasn't for me. Took a long time, 2 hrs to start working and only lasted for about 4 hours. I am now on 10 mg/ 325 Percocet every 4 hours and that is working much better for me.
Pete-I am on the patient assistance program from collegium company. You can look Google them to get their phone number for an application. If you qualify with low enough income then you get the medication free delivered to your front door!! Can't beat that right?
You cannot have any insurance or other coverage for medications and your income must be 200% of the federal poverty level.
Originally I had patient assistance for Oxycontin but they change their income level too much lower to qualify so I cannot get it anymore.
Good luck and I hope that helps.
Re: Lynx (# 4)
My doctor just started giving me xtampza and I really can't afford it can you guys please tell me how your getting coupons for this medication
Re: NurseAnon (# 9)
Hi NurseAnon. I read your responses regarding xtampza and I wanted to say thank you... your response allowed me to take this med with an open mind. I have been on it now for a month (I switched from MS Contin to Percocet and to xtampza). You were right, it does for the most part work reliably.
Please continue to post, not all of us are looking for a high. I am happy not being an 8/10 on most days so if I get to a 4/5 I realize the meds I am taking are working effectively.
Thanks again for your input.
Re: RJR (# 89)
A Fan (#15) - I had to switch from Oxycontin to Xtampza. I am taking one every 8 hours instead of every 12 and it is working perfect. Sometimes i take two a day sometimes 3, depends on the pain. Give them a little time and then talk to your doc about adjusting strength. I was pretty disappointed at first but once I got used to them I am satisfied. Good luck, I wouldn't take the fentanyl either.
Re: A Fan (# 15)
I’m with you on that. I was forced into taking xtampza instead of Oxycontin and it doesn’t work near as well. There trying to bully me into going on a 50mg fetinal patch but I don’t want anything to do with it. Oxycodone works better for me than anything but they they won’t let me have it. What are we supposed to do?
Re: Lou (# 82)
Hey Lou. Ut has been a while since our last conversation. Just wanted to touch base see how your doing and hope your hanging in there. Ya know I was thinking the other day that how hard it is to truely explain the pain and lifestyle that comes with a life long sentence to someone who has no idea what our pain even remotely feels like let alone the pressure that comes with it to function in society. Sometimes I feel that trying to explain to someone who has not experienced this is very tough and sometimes I feel judged and lookes down on by people. I have come to heaitate telling people ehat I take for pain, now a days it has become an automatic putdown or it is assumed that it is not warranted. Because of the abuse of pain medication by society over the last 15 yrs it has made life very hard for the people who truely rely on pain medication for daily life. I still remember when I opened my eyes after my back fusion. There are no words in the english language to describe the overwelming intense pain I was in. The crying and screaming I went thru. I truely was helpless and at the mercy of some snotty teenage STNA nurse that had no idea what was going on. That was one of the scariest moments of my life. I thank god that I found a pain management doctor who understood what I lived with everyday. Dont get me wrong I have days that I do nothing but lay in bed but for the most part I can function within reason. I appologize for the rant but I feel that I can finaly say what's on my mind to people on this forum who understand and can relate. Thank you all for listening and I look forward to the feedback and input of everyone because we are the ones who live with this and we need to help each other get thru because so called Normal people will never really GET IT. So I thank you all.
Thanks.
Re: Denise (# 86)
Hey Denise I am Mr.Ryan. At first when I was perscribed Xtampza I did not believe the rumors of havinf to eat a fatty food and then take your dose of xtampza. It is so true. Trust me thru trial and error I l learned the hard way. You have to eat with this med or it will not work correctly. Look back on my previouse posts. I think they will be very helpful. I transfered from 75mcg Fentanyl patch every 48 hours to 36mg xtampza twice a day. The xtampza will work if you eat with it. I also have 5mg Percocet twice a day for break thru. I have had several surgeries including lumbar facet fusion a bone graph from my hip etc. And this combo of medication keeps me functioning daily. I lead a full time job 50hrs a week and manage a full family with 2 children. If they took away my xtampza I would be bed bound and completely un able to function and maintain a somewhat regular life. I hope this helps and I truely hope you find what works for your bidy to manage your pain. This is coming from someone who can understand pain.
Thanks,
Re: Lori B (# 83)
Same with me, I tried it for a month and was not happy. It takes about 2 hours to kick in and lasted only about 5 hours. Went back to my Dr and asked for breakthrough pills but she said that would exceed the cdc limit so she put me on 6 10mg perks per day. Don't like these either. I'm going through withdrawal big time . The perks do seem to help my pain better. I will try to get through the withdrawal and stick with perks. They are 20 mg less than Xtampza. 36 mg Xtampza = 40 mg OxyContin. When I was on Xtampza At least I did not have withdrawals.
Re: OurLivesMatter (# 72)
I was told that the strength of the oxycodone I was taking was the same as the Xtampza er that I ended being prescribed. It's concerning that it's been cut in half. If you can remember where your research lead you, I'd like to read up on it. I sure as heck won't be a happy camper to find out I'm not getting the dose I should be getting. Take care.
