I need ppl who have tried the new Xtampza er med to tell me if it works the same as oxycontin? I need to switch so I wanted to know the strength of the new med in comparison.

Re: Lou (# 78) Expand Referenced Message

Hello again Lou, it sounds like you have a pretty good schedule going, from my experience so far with xtampza, consistency is key. After being on this medication fir a while your body will start to get in a routine and it will let yoy know when its time for my dose. What I have experienced so far is as you know I take my first dose at 2:30am. I can usually tell its getting close to time for my dose because my pain wil start coming on strong and I will get restless. I have had nights where I am stairing at the clock waiting for 2:30 to come along because I am hurting so bad. Before I was perscribed xtampza I was on 75mcg Fentanyl every 48 Hours. I cane to hate the fentanyl patch, I had constant withdrawls due to ineffective absorbtion. It was horible because it soley depended on absorbing thru your skin, so if it was hot ourside that day it would absorb at a faster rate and with an end result not lasting the full 48hrs. When I switched to xtampza I went thru severe with drawls until my pain doctor was able to get my dosage matched properly. Now I take xtampza 36mg every 12hrs. I can not say it enough how this is so much more consistant than the patch. I don't feel sick all the time and the fatigue went away. Now don't get me wrong xtampza doesn't take away all my pain but it does help manage it. Its definitely better than nothing that's for sure. Well sorry for rambling on. Let me know what you think and also how things are going with you. Also how long have you been taking the xtampza.

Re: MrRyan (# 81) Expand Referenced Message

Hello again, Ryan. I'll start with "I'm a 62 1/2 yr OLD woman" just in case anyone is curious. About your Fentynal patch, I'm glad that you're not on that anymore. With no way to control how it affects you is really not good to have to try to deal with. From what you describe, I'm surprised that anyone would prescribe it. I've heard that it's dangerous for anyone who has to come in contact with it whether it be a caregiver or medical professional. Sounds like you have an awesome pm professional who really wants the best for you. That's so important. I have no shame in telling the stupid things I do that are of no help to get me on the right track (with anything but I'll just stick to Rx subject). I told you that I really thought I should change schedule from 10:00 to more like 8:00 or even 7:00. NEVER as early as you! Thing is, I have been changing to 9:00 but usually woke up more like 8:30 or so. However, just this morning, I woke up and figured it was time to take my first pill, completed my ritual and because I just glanced at the clock, I determined that it was only 6:30! So much for a schedule, eh. So, since my schedule is blown, I've decided to aim for 8:00. My evening pill was almost always off anyway. You say consistency is so important and that makes sense plus you've already done the trial and error so I choose to learn from you. THANK YOU, SIR! Oh, you asked about his long I've been on this stuff.

I switched about 7 or 8 months ago. Had been on regular Oxycodone and switched because I had Rx for 4 pills a day but I almost never got 4th pill in. Started out at 13.5 and have gone up to 18 each pill. I think when I get my schedule straightened out, I'll be okay. Will use acetaminophen for break-thru. My last challenge is getting up at a normal person's time of day. That's gonna take some time. Been so immobile for so long (years). Oh, one more thing. My issues are mild scoliosis, DDD, spondylolisthesis (can't spell it) osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, fused bet l4 and l5 (no surgery, body did it on its own). I haven't had any surgery but have had esi's and rfa's. Neither helped. My pm guys say losing weight will help. If you could see me, you'd agree?? I'll spare you. I wish that I could wave a magic wand and completely cure you. You have such a positive attitude that I wish I had. You just sound like there's no way this is gonna do you in. Now, I think I've jabbered way too long, but. Since I'm old enough to be your grandma... Take care of yourself. Don't go even to your limit, much less over. Get your sleep. I look at the clock and know you should be asleep instead of taking care of my issues (although I really appreciate it!). Really long post. Sorry. Rest up. Let me know if you want to pick my brain or think of anything that will help anyone else on here. Shout out, people! Want to know anything, read Ryan's posts. He's so got this down to a science. Thanks for everything and take care!

I have to switch from 3 oxycontin to 2 xtampa a day, same dose supposedly, will I have withdrawal symptoms?

Hi Lynx, I have just started on Xtampza. I had to switch over from Oxycontin since my insurance quit covering oxy. The Xtampza is a good substitute but it does not last 12 hours. I think it will work just as good as Oxy once I get the dosage right. i am hoping to take one every 8 hours instead of every 12. They do make me a bit drowsy sometimes.

Re: OurLivesMatter (# 72) Expand Referenced Message

I was told that the strength of the oxycodone I was taking was the same as the Xtampza er that I ended being prescribed. It's concerning that it's been cut in half. If you can remember where your research lead you, I'd like to read up on it. I sure as heck won't be a happy camper to find out I'm not getting the dose I should be getting. Take care.

Re: Lori B (# 83) Expand Referenced Message

Same with me, I tried it for a month and was not happy. It takes about 2 hours to kick in and lasted only about 5 hours. Went back to my Dr and asked for breakthrough pills but she said that would exceed the cdc limit so she put me on 6 10mg perks per day. Don't like these either. I'm going through withdrawal big time . The perks do seem to help my pain better. I will try to get through the withdrawal and stick with perks. They are 20 mg less than Xtampza. 36 mg Xtampza = 40 mg OxyContin. When I was on Xtampza At least I did not have withdrawals.

Re: Denise (# 86) Expand Referenced Message

Hey Denise I am Mr.Ryan. At first when I was perscribed Xtampza I did not believe the rumors of havinf to eat a fatty food and then take your dose of xtampza. It is so true. Trust me thru trial and error I l learned the hard way. You have to eat with this med or it will not work correctly. Look back on my previouse posts. I think they will be very helpful. I transfered from 75mcg Fentanyl patch every 48 hours to 36mg xtampza twice a day. The xtampza will work if you eat with it. I also have 5mg Percocet twice a day for break thru. I have had several surgeries including lumbar facet fusion a bone graph from my hip etc. And this combo of medication keeps me functioning daily. I lead a full time job 50hrs a week and manage a full family with 2 children. If they took away my xtampza I would be bed bound and completely un able to function and maintain a somewhat regular life. I hope this helps and I truely hope you find what works for your bidy to manage your pain. This is coming from someone who can understand pain.
Thanks,

Re: Lou (# 82) Expand Referenced Message

Hey Lou. Ut has been a while since our last conversation. Just wanted to touch base see how your doing and hope your hanging in there. Ya know I was thinking the other day that how hard it is to truely explain the pain and lifestyle that comes with a life long sentence to someone who has no idea what our pain even remotely feels like let alone the pressure that comes with it to function in society. Sometimes I feel that trying to explain to someone who has not experienced this is very tough and sometimes I feel judged and lookes down on by people. I have come to heaitate telling people ehat I take for pain, now a days it has become an automatic putdown or it is assumed that it is not warranted. Because of the abuse of pain medication by society over the last 15 yrs it has made life very hard for the people who truely rely on pain medication for daily life. I still remember when I opened my eyes after my back fusion. There are no words in the english language to describe the overwelming intense pain I was in. The crying and screaming I went thru. I truely was helpless and at the mercy of some snotty teenage STNA nurse that had no idea what was going on. That was one of the scariest moments of my life. I thank god that I found a pain management doctor who understood what I lived with everyday. Dont get me wrong I have days that I do nothing but lay in bed but for the most part I can function within reason. I appologize for the rant but I feel that I can finaly say what's on my mind to people on this forum who understand and can relate. Thank you all for listening and I look forward to the feedback and input of everyone because we are the ones who live with this and we need to help each other get thru because so called Normal people will never really GET IT. So I thank you all.
Thanks.

Re: A Fan (# 15) Expand Referenced Message

I’m with you on that. I was forced into taking xtampza instead of Oxycontin and it doesn’t work near as well. There trying to bully me into going on a 50mg fetinal patch but I don’t want anything to do with it. Oxycodone works better for me than anything but they they won’t let me have it. What are we supposed to do?

Re: RJR (# 89) Expand Referenced Message

A Fan (#15) - I had to switch from Oxycontin to Xtampza. I am taking one every 8 hours instead of every 12 and it is working perfect. Sometimes i take two a day sometimes 3, depends on the pain. Give them a little time and then talk to your doc about adjusting strength. I was pretty disappointed at first but once I got used to them I am satisfied. Good luck, I wouldn't take the fentanyl either.

Re: NurseAnon (# 9) Expand Referenced Message

Hi NurseAnon. I read your responses regarding xtampza and I wanted to say thank you... your response allowed me to take this med with an open mind. I have been on it now for a month (I switched from MS Contin to Percocet and to xtampza). You were right, it does for the most part work reliably.

Please continue to post, not all of us are looking for a high. I am happy not being an 8/10 on most days so if I get to a 4/5 I realize the meds I am taking are working effectively.

Thanks again for your input.

Pete-I am on the patient assistance program from collegium company. You can look Google them to get their phone number for an application. If you qualify with low enough income then you get the medication free delivered to your front door!! Can't beat that right?
You cannot have any insurance or other coverage for medications and your income must be 200% of the federal poverty level.
Originally I had patient assistance for Oxycontin but they change their income level too much lower to qualify so I cannot get it anymore.
Good luck and I hope that helps.

Hi I have tried it. I was on 30 mg OxyContin 3times day and switched to 40 mg Xtamza twice day. It wasn't for me. Took a long time, 2 hrs to start working and only lasted for about 4 hours. I am now on 10 mg/ 325 Percocet every 4 hours and that is working much better for me.

Re: Damage (# 90) Expand Referenced Message

Hi, I am curious of you found the 8 hour dosing more effective than every 12. I have been on xtampza, and have never used OxyContin so have nothing to compare it too, other than the MS Contin which after 8 years simply wasn't working well. I like you have found the xtampza to be effective, how ever, notice it doesn't last as long as they say it should. Can I ask if you take it with or with out food and what type of effectiveness are you seeing at the hours apart... presage.

Thanks for any light you can shed on the dosages that work..

K

Re: Kay (# 96) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Kay, I was on Oxycontin 40 mg twice a day for about 6 years. My insurance quit covering it so they switched me to xtampza. I started with one 36mg every 12 hours and they weren't lasting long enough. I am now taking them every 8 hours and they seem to be working good. I do take it after meals or right before. Hope they work for you. Definitely try every 8 hours instead of every 12.Good luck Kay... Pain sucks!!

Re: MrRyan (# 87) Expand Referenced Message

Hi MrRyan, I am just getting ready to switch from 75 Fentanyl every 3 days to Xtampza 36 every 12 hours and I am so worried that it won't be able to touch my pain. I just lowered my Fentanyl from 100 mic to 75 3 weeks ago and now pain management hits me with this. I see that it did work for you, was hoping to hear that it's still working and that there were no withdrawals. Thank you so much for any help you can give me.

Re: BethB (# 98) Expand Referenced Message

Hello Beth, I think your transition will be ok. For me personally when I switched they started me on way to Low of a dose of xtampza so I had pretty bad withdrawls but once he moved me to 36mg every 12 hours I was good to go. Over time I think you will like this better. One thing I noticed when I was on 75mcg of fentanyl I had bad crashes and fatigue and on the last day before I changed my patch I was n pain and exausted. For me it seemed like the patch worked great for the first 24hrs then tappered off and by the last day I was half sick and exausted. I like the xtampza because its more consistant. If you would, could you keep me updated. You are the first person that I have spoke with that is taking very similar dosages to what I did in the past on fentanyl and also currently xtampza. My advice to you is eat something before you take your xtampza. The fattier the food the better. I have found the more fat content the food has I get a better longer and consistant dose of pain management. Let me know if you have any questions I am happy to help. Good luck in your switch. I think you will be ok. Take care Beth. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Re: Damage (# 97) Expand Referenced Message

I have been on Xtampza for two months now. I would say for me the dosage is a little too low; as I am using all of my break through meds throughout the month. I am not saying it is not helpful, just that it’s not as effective. Perhaps I can talk to the pm clinic and see if we can switch to every 8 instead of every 12. My doctors have been pretty good. Considering I have diffuse chronic pain from CIDP and a crush injury in my spine.
