Xarelto - Itching Side Effects
(Newest replies first)
Updated
I have been taking Xarelto 15mg x2/day for almost 3 weeks and will go onto 20mg/day next week for the remainder of 3 months. I had a lower leg blood clot almost 3 wks ago. I have experienced some itching of my lower and upper legs and wonder whether it is something to worry about. I had thought that maybe the symptoms may relax when I go onto the lower dose. I chose Xeralto over Warfarin for the convenience of less blood checks and think I would prefer to remain on it. I have been unable to get through to the clinic or to speak to my doctor so will probably have to make an appointment but thought I would ask here and see if there was any advice available. I have also started with itching to one of my eyes yesterday though this may be due to a new cleanser which I have stopped using. Has anybody else had similar problems?

I’ve been on Warfarin since 1997 & had no side effects. I was put on the after having 3 blood clots (DVT) & a pulmonary embolism. I didn’t want to change to one of the newer drugs because I have no problems. I’m on 7mgs a day. The only difference is you need to watch the dietary restrictions. It doesn’t mean you can’t have anything on the list but you should be consistent with it so when you go for a blood test, it’s neither too high or too low. Good luck.

Hi, I was on on xarelto for awhile and I was miserable, I went to Heart Doctor and he switched me to Eliquis. and it’s even worse. I’m going to ask for Warfarin and see how that works. Thank You
Re: Esther (# 14)
Since posting in June 2018 regarding my problems with Xarelto I saw an EP in December who, after hearing of all my problems with Xarelto switched me to Edoxaban which he finds is better tolerated. I am happy to say that since then most of the side effects I had with Xarelto have either improved or gone completely. No more nausea or bleeding from back of throat, (scary) joint pain much improved and swelling and itching in the legs nearly gone. Believe me the itch was practically unbearable. So all in all I would say that I have had no bad effects at all from the Edoxaban, other than the fact that at this time it is not covered by OHIP for a fib so it's costing me $115 a month whereas Xarelto was paid for but hopefully that will change soon. I would sooner pay that than suffer from the horrible effects I had with Xarelto.
I have had severe diarrhea for several months. Am I taking too much Xarelto?
Re: Terri (# 13)
Hi Terri, I too have had an issue with clots & a PE years ago. After my 3rd clot, my Dr put me on Warfarin for life. I have no issues with it either. Reading about all the side effects on Xarelto & Elequis is so scary. Why would a Dr prescribe these drugs when Warfarin works without any issues. Since being on Warfarin for so many years, I no longer have to get tested so often. My blood work has stayed the same for years. I now get tested every 6 months. The government needs to do the proper testing on these new drugs.
Re: Esther (# 16)
The antidote will not be available until 2019. God knows when... and which month.
Re: Verwon (# 1)
Just so you know I was diagnosed with a DVT blood clot in my calf and was put on Xarelto right away. A few days later I went for a second opinion because it came out of nowhere. I am not over weight nor sit around nor been on a long flight. My second opinion at a different hospital told me I was misdiagnosed. That I never had one. The day after I took Xarelto I had bad side effects and was rushed by ambulance to ER. Did you know Xarelto has many class action lawsuits out? That there is NO REVERSAL for this drug? If you start bleeding in your stomach there is nothing they can do. WORST DRUG EVER. ALWAYS seek a second opinion. I have a huge lawsuit but won’t sue because I just thanked God for showing me another solution.
Re: Terri (# 13)
I have had 3 blood clots & a pulmonary embolism years ago before any new brands of blood thinners were on the market. I’m currently still taking warfarin 7mg per day. I have had no bleeding issues or any side effects. When they started marketing Xarelto, I asked my doctor about it & he said that it wasn’t on the marketing very long & since I’ve been consistent with the Warfarin, I was better off staying the course. I had no side effects or itching of any kind any most importantly, no more clots. Hope this helps.
Re: Esther (# 14)
I was coughing up blood for a few days, but before It got any worse I called the Dr, I talked to the nurse, she told Dr and he took me off for 6 days and then told me to get back on it. The bleeding had stopped. But I still have eye problems they are watering and itching and very blurry. I’m so tired I don’t want to get out of the bed. My stomach always feels bloated, my right foot swells and tingles almost painful. I’m going to ask for another blood thinner I can’t take this.
Has anybody had side effects of Xarelto? I have had trouble with my eyes, they are blurry and constantly watering; artificial tears do not work. I stay bruised up all the time. And constantly feel so tired I don’t want to do anything but sit.
I've taken Xarelto 20 mg, for 4 months. My tongue became very dark, black almost (blooding from the stomach?). Also, I have a very light stool color which seems abnormal.
Re: Terri (# 13)
I saw my doctor yesterday and according to him an antidote for Xarelto has just been approved by the FDA. That's something I suppose but I'm still not happy with all the side effects and of having no energy. I told my doctor that I wanted an appointment to discuss "ablation" rather than be on blood thinners for what's left of my life, so we'll see what comes of that. Unfortunately, it'll probably take months to get an appointment
4/2/18 - THROMBUS NOTED WITHIN THE PROXIMAL AND MID POSTERIOR TIBIAL VEIN. I was put on Xarelto 15mg, 2 x day for 21 days, followed by 20mg, 1 x day.
5/1/18 - follow-up doppler was done & the DVT was...thankfully, gone.
I am 63 and never had a clot before or any blood issues for that matter. A genetic blood test was done and I am heterozygous Factor V Leiden positive w/o the D mutation. Odd to find this out at 63, however my Hematologist is not the least bit concerned as he says it's quite common and it really does not play a major factor.
This being said, my DVT --- in my opinion, was due to workplace immobility. The last 2 years I spent ...literally...8+ hours on my computer doing research. Often not getting up for 3-4 hours at a time. I knew better & my adult kids kept warning me to get a computer stand where I had to stand to use it...I didn't...and as a result, I believe I created the perfect environment for a clot.
My Hematologist claims that workplace immobility has no bearing on clot development...I say it does as it's no different that sitting 6-8 on a flight. Anyway, he claims since my clot was not due to the usual culprits other than being 60+ years old; female; and to a very lessor degree the Factor V, I need to remain on Xarelto 20mg for life. I say ...no...6 months should be sufficient since I have no history of any issues that are clot specific. I can't find any studies/research to support his approach to my situation.
The reason I am looking for info on this is the joint pain; weight gain and hair loss is acute & very troublesome. I'm functioning at less than optimum capacity (tire easily) due to the blood thinner.
Do you know of any studies regarding DVTs caused by workplace immobility? I'd like to discuss this w/ my doctor as he seems to think it's not possible.
Thanks!
I have been on Xarelto 20 mg since the Fall for A-Fib. I have had lots of side effects like nausea, back pain, heavy tired legs with swollen left calf with rash and severe itch. To put it mildly I have felt horrible the whole time I have been on this drug. The most recent problem I have encountered is that I woke up on Friday with clots of blood in my mouth and don't know where it's coming from, definitely not my nose unless it is at the back of nose and throat or sinuses, but nothing when I blow my nose. Once I rinsed my mouth out and brushed my teeth it seemed to have stopped but this morning I had a small amount. This happened once last fall with enough blood to be all over the pillow and I told the Doctor about it but as it had stopped he didn't seem too concerned. Has anyone else had this happen and should I be concerned? I am seriously thinking of coming off this medication as it has been a constant worry.
Re: Sue (# 6)
Hi. I hope u are better by now. I was reading what you had to say about the new blood thinner Xarelto. There are so many side effects with this drug that it's unreal. I was on it for 2 days and my INR was 4.1, way too high. So my Dr pulled me off right away and had me go back on Warfarin 4mgs a day which is better, no side effects and I don't mind the lab work every 2 weeks either. I suggest you ask ur Dr about the old blood thinner Warfarin. There isn't a major lawsuit against it like there is with Xarelto and the old blood thinner has a Vit K to back things up if needed where the new blood thinner has nothing.
Has anyone experienced irritability and anger on Xarelto, because my husband has only been taking Xarelto for 6 months and there is a big change in his attitude and he is grouchy/hateful? My mom's boyfriend also takes this and has had the same issue. Any comments will be helpful. Thank you.
Can I take Xarelto every other day to cut down side effects and because I worry about bleeding? Also, can I take half a dose of Xarelto?
I have been so nauseated and cold and have confusion since being on Xarelto. It's so bad I want to stop it. Any advice? Is this normal for side effects?
I'm on xarelto and metoprolol and have been experiencing tingling. Is that a side effect?
