Sorry to hear about the condition your knee is in. Did your doctor recommend any types of supplements or nutritional regimen to help rebuild the cartilage?
According to the MayoClinic, glucosamine is one of the substances that our body's naturally use to build cartilage. Supplements containing glucosamine are also relatively inexpensive at most health food stores, so that may be something worth considering. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is another supplement touted for similar uses as well. But there are a plethora of other alternative options out there if you're willing to experiment for a while until you find out what works best.
My theory is that if you continue to give your body the right tools (via vitamins, minerals, and other nutrient dense foods), it can begin to repair itself over time. I'd look forward to hearing your feedback if you found anything that worked!
