Withdrawal From Dilaudid

Hey everyone, im recently cutting down from 16mg of dilaudid every 3-4 hrs to im at 4mg every 4 hrs now. Ive been on dilaudid for 10 months for a tumor that went undiagnosed for 8 months. Most doctors thought i was just drug seeking because they couldnt find out what was causing my pain, so im relieved they finally found something and i had it removed and i feel so much better. Now all my other problems are solved except for the dilaudid dependance. Any tips on getting off this stuff. It gets extremely unbearable after just 5 hours from the last dose. I know i dont need it for pain anymore, i just want to be off everything and back to normal. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm taking 16 mg of Dilaudid 4x day with 60mg of OxyContin time release 2x daily. I've run short on my Dilaudid by 3 days - (I have a drug addict in the house). Just to be clear... my doctor told me no early refills. So I have plenty of my OxyContin. My question is, can the OxyContin prevent my withdrawal?
I was on 16 mgs a day of Dilaudid for 8 to 10 months. Plus the Fentanyl pain patch.
I requested to be taken off it because of bad memory loss. It sounds like your having residual pain still. And when I made the switch to Oxytocin extended release I had no problems. Your not popping pills all day and if you feel like your a bit tolerant to the Dilaudid you can take Valium too with it. I was more than happy to get off Dilaudid as this drug made me so ill I ended up having a stroke. Was unable to speak. Also my behavior changed quite a bit. Almost got myself into a lot of trouble. Be careful with this drug. It's not just dependency that worries me, it's the fact that it is very short acting, too strong to use long term, and most doctors do not know the strength and side effects yet from using large doses. I could of died because I also had a medical procedure that required sedation. I couldn't speak right for months. It was very frightening to say the least. I thought the doctor knew what he was doing. Question everything. Do what you can to get off this drug not matter what. Hope this helps.
Heck no TRAMADOL/ULTRAM/ULTRACET, HDM!!! Those gave me worse withdrawals than hydrocodone or anything else. Those pills are disguised as good, but are awful. Not to mention the side effects. You guys need to hear me. Tramadol is just another addiction with awful W/D's.
Try to get hold of some suboxone you need to wait at lesat 24 hours after you get off the drugs. Start out at 8 MG and move up 8 MG at at time. I have been on 16 for ten years coming off a monster habit.I just had knee surgery they have me on 2 MG dilaudad
Tramadol 50 mg 4-6 times daily with help with withdrawals. Your doctor should prescribe it and it's available at any pharmacy.
If you truly want to quit the best way to do it and I have done it several times always to see where my real pain is at because these pain meds just trick your mind and can actually make you hurt worse. But anyway I would just keep pilling down at your own rate. So if your takin 4 4 mg dilaudid then go down to 3 for a week the down to 2 for the weeks and then down to one and even down to a half and see how you feel, if you are experiencing withdrawals my only suggestion would be suboxen.. That's an opiate blocker and it helps even people on H..best of luck
Opiate withdrawerl from any opiate whatever the pill or drug is is absolutly brutal unless you do it real slow and consistant do not listen to anyone thats never been through it its very hard i was on oxycodone for years started using H and was on a nightmarish ride for years i went to hospital and was detoxed horriblie wrong with methadone they called ut a blind detox and in five days your done it sucked i was sick as a dog but stuck it out I had to go into a methadone clinic for help but im off H and oxys and all drugs for 2 years i only take 80 mg of methadone a day and it doesnt make me look or act high and now i can take my time lowering my methadone as long as it takes for me to get off it the right way Many people wont go this route but for me it works after doctors got me stuck on oxys and other pain meds good luck god knows we need it
Get your self a box of 8 mg Suboxone. If you have INS. ask for the discount card and it will cost you nothing. This stuff tastes awful but start out by taking two strips the first two days then 1 and 3/4 the next and 1 and a half the next and so on. This does work. I had a supply of Suboxone which is now gone, but I used it when I would run out because my Dr. will only give me 90 pills a month. Now I guess I will have to give it up. Tragically it is the only thing that touches my back pain after they butchered my back in surgery. They would rather you be on some long acting pain med that takes months to get out of your system. And they say IR drugs are more addictive. Who do they think they are kidding.
This is so true ! tahnks for letting me know I am not alone in dealing with drs that dont have a clue!
Dear John,
I feel your pain, most literally, I have chronic pain, arthritis in almost all my joints, need 2 knee replacements degenerative disk disease in my spine. I was on 210 MG of Ms-Morphine twice a day for 12 yrs, then one day I get a letter in the mail my Dr. has closed her practice, with no replacement, this was June/2011, I just got a Dr to give me something I didn't care what, but I had to go cold turkey, and I felt like a junkie, asking for help, the most I got in that time period was ativan to help the withdrawl. It helped if I took it more than prescribed. If you can GET a Dr to give you something like that it may help, otherwise my heart goes out to you, it's a tough road. Good Luck, and keep us posted. BTW...Now I am on Dilaudid and not looking forward to the next addiction, but I can't go without anything. Take Care
John, have you consulted your doctor for assistance?
They may be able to help you with a good taper schedule, as well as other solutions to help prevent or mitigate the worst of the withdrawal effects.
Along with the withdrawal effects, you also usually experience rebound pain, which can be pretty severe. When I stopped high doses of narcotics, cold turkey, after being on pain management for several years, I was very miserable for well over a month.

Hey, that's all normal. I'm in the same boat but w/oxycodone. Anyone who's not an opiate user (and especially doctors) DOES NOT understand a damn thing about it. The doctors all know that you can become dependant on them, &thats about it. They seem to think that if you DO become dependant, it's because you were taking them wrong, etc. BULLS***. If you take ANY opiate, in ANY amount every single day, you will become dependant. It's maddening that we all have to tiptoe around that fact...because God knows if you make mention of it, you either get your dosage reduced or your prescription taken away. I'm glad to know that even if you have a TUMOR, you get treated like a criminal. I had broken bones & apparently even THAT doesn't merit pain medication. All you can do is keep weaning off, as slowly as it takes to stay comfortable. Don't torture yourself, and don't feel bad/guilty. This is a "thing" that a lot of us are going thru...& that no one gets unless they've been there. In fact, don't take advice from AYONE that hasn't, they have no idea what they're talking about. Oh...and Suboxone is great for detoxing off of opiates, if it agrees with you (it didn't w/me). Try it.
