Will This Mess Me Up?

So I'm going on a trip in 8 days (May 31st) and I really don't want to be on my period during it. I'm suppose to get my period in 5 days. I just got birth control pills for the first time today. If I start taking the pills now even though I don't have my period yet, will that postpone my period until after my trip (I come home on June 6th)? Please help!!

Hi Jenna!

I understand your concern, but there's really no way to say for sure.

There's a chance that it could work to delay your period, but when you're adding these synthetic hormones to your body, there are no guarantees, because they could have the opposite effect and cause you to spot with breakthrough bleeding, or to start early.

I really wish I had a better answer for you, but I don't. There's just no way to predict how any medication may affect anyone that takes it.

As to starting before your period though, one thing you should be aware of is that it will not be effective immediately to prevent pregnancy. If you start it now, you'll need to use some other form of protection for the first 7 days.
