Will Oxycontin Be Changed Back To Original Formula (Page 32) (Top voted first)
Updatedis Oxycontin going back to their old formula? OC instead of OP.
Hi Bobby...
I'm not sure what state Michelle is in but I think she is now on the Sandoz brand like me..I remember her saying she was made to swap to the plastic crap that made her sick..
Michelle was the one that told me about the Sandoz brand similar to the old formula, my doctor didn't know about it..
I was living in NSW, I'm now in Queensland, and they changed me over to the plastic crap about 2 and a half years ago...I didnt have a choice. Then Michelle told me that Sandoz had made a similar product to the old version. Thank God...I got sick on the plastic formula and like others on here passed full tablets..
Not only was I constantly in a state of withdrawals I was in severe pain..We are so lucky in Australia..but I constantly worry that they will take the Sandoz away from us again..
So NSW changed to the plastic crap a few years back and that was all you could get then Sandoz stepped in...
As I said months back, this is an issue affecting only a couple of countries. The vast majority of Oxycontin is now, always has been and always WILL be the same as it ever was. I tried an OP or ten (80mg) once and was appalled at how they felt about half strength and gave me dreadful GI side effects. Imagine being dispensed a box of 120mg purples and only getting the effect of a 60mg red pill? And an effing sore stomach for days to boot! It may be of interest to readers that my doctor told me last month that she had been told that in future I would NOT be given Oxycontin at the pharmacy, but (as she had been instructed) the CHEAPEST GENERIC MR OXYCODONE. I was delighted to find that this 'generic' called LONGTEC, distributed by Qderm, is in fact OXYCONTIN! Precisely the same tablets, made by the same manufacturer on the same line, same 'OC' & '80' imprint, same excipients in same proportion, in fact Oxycontin brand-name tablets simply in a different blister and box! Even the PIL is identical to that inserted in OC brand boxes, deleting the word 'Oxycontin' and inserting 'Longtec' wherever necessary... If I had been given Actavis Reltebon or Lannacher Oxylan, the only other two makes apart from OC as distributed by NAPP (UK) & Mundipharma (Europe Continental), I would have probably thrown them back at the pharmacist as they are so poor as to be almost unusable for my pain levels. So any UK resident given an unexpected new Rx form with 'Longtec' specified, worry not. You're getting the same tablets as ever! Praiiise the Looord! Very strange situation. The only difference is that Longtec do NOT come in 15, 30, 60 or 120mg strengths, so if you are on one of those, then you will habe no choice except original branded OC. Longtec also powder the same way, into something almost as fine as talc. If you need them that way...
BTW! Actavis LYNLOR (Immediate release capsules) are just as strong and high quality (a first for that company methinks) as branded OxyNorm. Only difference I noticed was imprint 'OXY 20' rather than the brand's 'ONR 20'. Don't fear the Actavis capsules. They might be able to make a good capsule but for Christ sakes avoid their MR "RELTEBON" (only in 10/20/40/80mg) which may not be so bad as Lannacher's OXYLAN (OXYDOLOR in some countries) but still awful compared with OC pills of either brand.
I am on Oxymorphone ,but it does not help the pain like Original oxycontin, some days it does not help at all .I have also tried fentanyl patches .methadone . I am lucky my doctor has tried to help me .I have no idea why OC worked the best and did not make me tired.I have tried almost everything ,and that's why I feel so hopeless.
Yes they are made by perdue and they are all made here in the plant in Ontario Canada
I'm
Not angry at all honey, but it's a FACT that most people who refer to them as oxy ARE abusers. If you're too lazy to spell out the correct spelling it's probably just a side affect to the abuse you're subjecting yourself to.. Obtains some knowledge before you try giving advice
Reply #175 Chemist: The 'wax coating' on OC tablets has absolutely NOTHING to do with the m/r system, which is state of the art. One can bite into OC, swallow the tabs in quarters and still receive the full benefit (6-8 hours maximum) of the m/r effect. The coating actually contains around a milligram of oxycodone in itself.
Having tried the OP version made in the USA I am certain that not a single patient here in the UK would accept it. I too suffered GI side effects and as for duration of action i can not say it lasted any longer than 8 hours, similar to the max duration of real Oxycontin as dispensed worldwide, except in the USA. I suggest that anybody who has been prescribed Oxycontin in the USA (and I am surprised that people still actually take that OP crap) change onto immediate release oxycodone. I use those anyway as I find them better four times daily than Oxycontin.
On the other hand, I am thinking of returning to OC as a background analgesic and using a rotation of Oxynorm, Diconal, hydromorphone and Palfium (dextromoramide) as rescue meds because unlike the US, no country's Health Authorities will allow prescription of OC other than twice daily. i found this out when a doc I was seeing prescribed me 80mg tds and within three months auditors told him to cease those prescriptions immediately, give bd, and use rescue meds when required, eg three Diconal prn, max 9/day, 5 x Palladone 2.6mg prn, max 15/day etc.
The 120mg strength OC (purple) are superb but still suffer from short action, requiring rescue meds. I find the 120s are more effective than taking one each of the 80 and 40mg tabs, as one had to do before the introduction of the 120mg purples.
Jeanie, I hope that gives you my view on duration of action - it certainly doesn't matter whether you are taking the 10mg or the 120mg OC, you are never going to squeeze any longer than 6-8 hours from them.
#194 Robie: There is another example of the USA breaking patents many years before they expire, in the case of oxymorphone.
If it had a Product Licence here then I would be most interested to try it as a rescue med in a rotation. As far as i can gather, whereas dipipanone and dextromoramide require 30mg and hydromorphone around 12mg as an effective med in that situation, my OC titration being 120mg bd, it is stronger than the first two and would need only 15mg. Whether or not it would suit would have to be found out by trial. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a single person/clinic/online pharmacy which will ship any to the UK; I am desperate to try any analgesic that works. I do not understand how or why Diconal, by far the best i/r opioid analgesic on the market in my opinion, is denied to US citizens, or oxymorphone denied to everybody outwith the USA. Correct me if i am wrong but I think it is the ONLY country to grant oxymorphone a licence for human consumption. But I hear good things about it, as long as you avoid any m/r version - using only 5mg and 10mg i/r tablets.
However to return to the subject, if Oxycontin is NOT reintroduced to the USA then something is far wrong, because my experience of the 'pretend' stuff, the OP, was so bad, so weak (the 80mg tablets provided the analgesia that only a 40mg OC does) and with such bad side effects, esp GI, headache and back pain I thought was separate from the GI, perhaps kidneys, that I really fail to understand how Purdue have managed to actually sell ANY OP at all. As I said, no British patient would accept them, being so far removed from OC in their effectiveness and their side effects. They can not possibly have had enough time to properly test and trial OP before bringing it inadvisably to market.
STICK TO I/R OXYCODONE! The original brand capsules Oxynorm are immeasurably better than the tablets, most of which are generic, if not all; b/a when insufflated (the caps contain powder finer than any I know and no binders and other stuff which make insufflation of crushed tablets a bad idea) is 87%, 89% PO. The great advantage and why snorting the caps is so common here is that onset of action is less than 2 mins.
I just got put on these pills and my pain management doctor started flipping out because i had no metabolites in my urine. I told her i took my last one 2 days ago and she said i should be discharged because i have no metabolites in my urine. Now i so presoak them in ginger ale just long enough to start the swelling of the gooey polymer. I then cutit off with my teeth and put the remaining pill u der my tongue like a suboxone. It gets absorbed slow.y into my bloodstream, there is no stomache upset or flatulence and there is pain relief. Since I took it orally i am still obeying prescribing directions. Am i filling my lungs or arteries with that goo and is that why i dont jave metabolites in my jrine?
thanx John D that helps me a lot! I was going to have my dosage increased when I next got my script, my doctor has had a permit for me for 3 months but I didnt want to use it if I could get through without it. After info that a generic wouldnt happen I saw no choice but now i will keep at my current dose till dec & hope once on the previous formula will be fine again. Its not easy, im really having a tough time of it but can see light at the end of the tunnel now. In looking for info I came across a site where junkies were discussing exactly how to abuse the new formula, absolutely disgusting & to be honest you would have to be so stupid to do what they were talking about, & as I read it I found they were finding the info on how to tamper with it from the manufactures site!!!! They have the results of what happens when various methods are used etc........ why would they do that???? Ive learnt a great deal about corporate greed throughout this, & find the disregard for the people who are hurt by all this sickening. I really hope Purdue & Mundipharma lose a great deal of money once the generic is in stores. I hope we are all able to get the pain relief needed soon & to anyone on here that is abusing oxycontin I really hope you get the help you need, these are horrible medications, that those who genuinely need them hate having to take usually. Life is a wonderful gift, dont waste it taking drugs that ruin so many of the good things in it. If you take drugs to forget bad things that have happened, there are better ways of dealing with your problems. If you have no physical illness or injury your very lucky, make the most of it because one day you might not have the option
Well I have to say onto week two of the generics. I finally get 12 hours back out of my dose. I actually have been able to reduce the amount I was taking due to the efficiency of the new Sandoz oxycodone. My previous pharmacy that I was dealing with had a week of my old medication left, so I went in there. (A pharmacy that pretends they don't exist and if you want them you are IV'ing them). The Pharmacy tried to make out I had no more there and I was delusional. After my doctor phoned them I finally got my remaining amount. Than the pharmacist tried to make fun of how much I would be paying due to them not being on the PBS.
Thank you Sandoz
Thank you Federal health minister
Thank you Therapeutic goods registry
I have always said, I wouldn't wish my ailments for requiring Oxycodone on anyone. However there are certain closed minded people that I wouldn't mind having their mind opened a little.
How are others finding the new product?
i find it very hard to believe you are a pharmacist, its DISPENSE not dispence, not an easy error to make when this is in your job description. plus multiple spelling mistakes of simple words ie week instead of weak. plus I find it unbelievable that as a pharmacist you are suggesting delivery to a post office of a schedule 8 medication as if they were lollies. there is a huge problem concerning oxycontin and I applaud the drug companies for making it more inaccessible for the wrong patients. I find it unusual that so many patients are having problems with the new formula , it cannot be marketed or passed by TGA for approved use if it does not provide the benefits as formulated . its pharmacists like you, if you even are one, that make it so difficult for the rest of genuine pharmacists trying to deal with pressure from inappropriate requests for the abused form of oxycontin. I appreciate there may be a small number of patients who may not be able to tolerate the new formula, however im sure there is an appropriate substitution. and to suggest that you can show someone a way to extract the powder from the tablet, seriously , its fortunate for you that you do not list your actual name or I would be reporting you and your ridiculous doctor friend to the appropriate boards.
Eho ssid that I never seen it are you sure you got your story straight Michelle?
There are new reasons for new medical findings everyday and for you to say hair thing is bs????? You dont know jack, so post real findings not your opinion.
FrightenedAgain, the active ingredient in the new Oxycontin formulation is still Oxycodone, just like what was in the original formulation, so the long-term health risks should, theoretically, remain the same. It is only the inactive ingredients of the tablets that they have changed.
And otherwise, if they do cause any other problems, with long-term use, there is really no way to know, at this time, because they haven't been on the market long enough for anyone to know.
Have you considered talking to your doctor about trying a different medication?

I just think this drug needs to be discontinued all together. My entire family has fallen apart from my sisters drug addiction, and it has not stopped, and it looks like it will not either. Since they changed their formula many addicts, such as my sister, who were addicted to it have turned to heroin. Oxy just needs to go away, if they go back to the original formula then my sister will never get better.
BL you obviously are in the US & I don't know what your angle is, are you a patient with chronic pain or a junkie? If you look back to early posts on here you will find some from junkies telling people how to make the new tablets abusable. Its a really s***ty thing to do, post stuff like that on a forum where patients with all manner of pain are struggling, after this medication was changed. You seem to have limited knowledge on this subject, so its better you don't give information to others who need answers. There is one reason for the reformulation & that is greed by The pharmaceutical companies that make & distribute it. Junkies abusing the OC formula just gave them an excuse, the new formulation becomes a new patent, & no other company gets a look in. John D. thanx for the information you provided, my chemist was told the generic would be out mid August but if as you say the PBS have knocked it back it will be ages. I see my pain specialist next week, ill see what info he has & let you all know. Just a passing thought, addicts will always find a way to abuse drugs, if they cant use one type they will just shift to another. They are chasing a high to feel good, myself I have no idea what it feels like to be high, the medication reduces my pain from a level 8-9 often 10 down to a 5-6 if Im lucky. BL you say pain doesn't kill anyone, you mustn't have the pain for which these medications are intended. When you wake up in the morning (if you could get sleep) & it hits you like a smack in the face with a bat. You cant move until your morning dose starts to work & your whole life stopped because of a disease thats destroying your body internally with no way of stopping it. Tell me how no one has died from this sort of pain BL, cause i can send you a list of people now deceased, that couldn't live in the same pain that i face each day. You know nothing BL.
Holly, since it is a time released pill, it is perfectly normal for him to see it in his stool. That is just the outer shell, but the medication has been released into his body and he would experience that with most time released medications.
I am, however, sorry that he is having such problems with pain and not getting the relief he needs to his suffering.
Has he spoken to his doctor about using the regular release Oxycodone formulation? It is available as both the generic and name brand Roxicodone, but it is not made by Purdue, so it isn't formulated like the Oxycontin OP.
