The DEA needs to stay out of pain medication. There are people out here that actually have a reason to be using it. Why not focus on the illegal Meth labs, they took away the good working TheraFlu because of it's ingreients, now it doesn't work and we still have hundreds of meth labs and meth related arrests. Taking that away didn't stop anything.

I have been on OxyContin for 4 years now for chronic SI pain and now because of shoulder pain due to a serve car accident in the spring. When the change in formulas happened I had to increase my does. I am now living in Colombia and picked up my script for the first time..... It is OC not OP and I will need to lower the dose. Purdue still makes OC they just do not sell it in the US. I hope someone wakes up and allows Purdue to sell the effective version in the US. Chronic pain patients need something that works and should not have to ingest a bunch of plastics

I used to take the original OC 40mg 3 times a day and it worked very well for my pain. I have a ruptured disk, fractured vertebrae, and neuropathy from HIV/AIDS. When my insurance stopped paying for even the generic football shaped pills, The Dr. put me on 2 20mg oxycodone IRs every 6 hours as needed. That worked great but it was a lot of pills on top of all the other meds i take. To keep things simpler with less pills, last week my Dr. put me on Oxycontin OP 60mg. The results are horrible! These pills basically have the same effectiveness as a Vicodin 5/500. I also went through withdrawl when the switch was made. Why make a pill that does nothing but make people who already suffer from pain suffer more? Im asking my dr next month to switch to oxymorphone (Opana) and see how that works. All this comes down to is that the oxycontin OPs are worthless. I had to take 6 60 mg. tablets one morning just to get the effectiveness i would need to be pain free. The pain relief could be compared to taking approximately 60 mg of instant release oxycocone. Please change the formula back. Purdue is not helping anything, only making things worse. Junkies are going to find a fix one way or another. If not through pharmaceuticals than through street drugs like heroin. That makes it tougher on border control. and easier for cartels, and all the rest of the gruesome reality that illegal drug manufacturers bring to mind. Change the formula to the original OC.

Sorry Alan but your very wrong. Even the dr's and purdue tell patients that with the new op..you might have to be titrated up from regular dose. If these op's were releasing the same way as the former there would be no need to do this. Also the rate of release has been changed from the former as releasing 23% per hour of dose to the new version at 17%.One of the reasons many patients go through withdrawal on the op's is their body lacks an enzyme that digests the myriad plastics in the new op.

I have spoken with my pharmacist several times about the generic "old oc" formula coming out this month. I go to a small pharmacy, so she didn't know anything about it. She contacted another pharmacist at CVS & they told her that Purdue's patent expires April 16th. They also said what is happening is that Purdue is fighting the companies that want to make the generics because they're saying that it's truly not a generic if the old formula is being made. They also told her that prescriptions written for Oxycontin will not be filled with the generics and that your doctor has to write for Oxycodone ER & they may also have to put a small note on the rx saying "old oc formula". Please check with your individual pharmacies before having your doctor do this as I don't want to misinform anyone. She also contacted the wholesaler where the pharmacy gets all their drugs from and they told her that they do not have the generic version yet- this was about 2 weeks ago.

I am positive that the patent on the original OC version expires on April 16th. What I'm hoping is that the pharmacies are just not giving out any specific information because they're afraid of people that take Oxycontin illegally and they don't want to give out too much information. I do believe that CVS & Walgreens will definitely carry it. I'm praying that the "old OC" generic version is available immediately.

I too have had problems with the OP version. I was having horrible stomach aches & have had withdrawal symptoms many times as they're not releasing the same way the OC version did. I've also seen a GI specialist because my liver enzymes were highly elevated with the OP version (I don't drink alcohol) and because of my stomach pain. I had 4 tests; MRI, Ultrasound & 2 other tests that I don't remember what they were called. I was told that my bile duct ends abruptly. The doctor said I may have been born with it that way. I also noticed that after I had the last test where they ran a dye through my bile duct I was defacating many, many OP "shells" for weeks afterwards. I don't believe in coincidences- I think that those damn "shells" were giving me the pain- I no longer have the pain since I seem to have evacuated the "shells" from my system.

Lets all say a prayer that the generics will be available on April 17th. I can't stand this crappy OP version anymore!

Anna- I too have had GI issues. I just sent an email to [email protected] asking them to please keep politics and greed out of the equation. You seem like an intelligent person. Let's all write to them. They need to hear our voices.

Right after I replied to you I looked on FDA site, as of today, Purdue's request for extended patent has been approved (through a labeling revision request via Purdue) called sNDA (supplemental new drug application). Purdue has 14 days to reply to FDA with required pre/post market studies... you can bet your butt they have that ready and waiting. Amazing what deep pockets will get you. So staggering that the public has no say against all those millions.

I definitely find that the new formulation of oxycontin are not as efficacious as the old. I have been taking oc's for 4 years for pancreatitis and I know that I have a dependence for them, but I never took them other than orally swallowing. I just don't feel I'm getting the same pain relief and I'm having mild withdrawal symptoms, and it started exactly when they came out with the new formulation.

I am so sorry you have suffered so much. I only took the new oxycontin for 3 days because my pain came roaring back like a ferocious lion when I started the oxycontin. I had to switch to another med, I was in pain management clinic.
I have no idea if the drug is causing your damage, but I've heard that it does cause horrible nausea. I hope you can switch to a new med or dr, other than telling your dr you want to taper off, I don't know what else to say. Good luck, follow your inner body wisdom.

Purdue has done something to the OP formula recently; I can tell. The side effects that I am getting from my last 2 OP scripts are about 10 times worse than they already were, & they were pretty bad to begin with. I have been suffering from the switch from OC to OP since the beginning.... inadequate pain relief, terrible GI symptoms, & overwhelming fatigue. Now however, all the symptoms I just mentioned are much worse plus, I am now experiencing terrible withdrawal symptoms with my usual dose, a side effect that I never had before. My doc refuses to change scripts, & I don't know what to do. He knows I have legitimate reasons for pain meds & I'm not an abuser, but that's just how he is. He treats all his patients the same, across the board & never makes pain med changes. I live in a rural area, with no other nearby docs, so that's not an option either. I had a life with the OC Oxycontin. I went back to work & was doing extremely well. I am now completely incapacitated again because of the switch to OPs, that don't compare at all to the effectiveness of the OCs. I can't work & can barely get up from bed. One day, I found a single OC tab that had been misplaced in my med cabinet; it must have fallen behind other items some time ago. That day I used the OC instead of the OP, and I had the best day (health wise), than I've had in yrs. When I woke up the next morning, I cried brokenheartedly, when I realized I would never have a day like the day before again. It is horrific to know that Purdue cares more about drug abusers, then people who greatly benefited from the OC formula. Purdue gave pain patients a medication that gave them back a quality of life, only to snatch it away because of drug abusers. Drug abusers should NEVER be a reason to take quality of life away from legitimate pain patients. And, I do not know what Purdue has done to the OPs recently. It is VERY obvious to me that they did someting AGAIN. Has anyone else noticed a HUGE difference in the already useless OPs recently? I didn't think the OPs could get any worse than they already are, but it appears that they have. So, have others noticed too?

You are so very right. It is not H and I wish they would stop making that comparison in all the tv news shows and documentaries. Its been a while since your post and I still hear them saying this. It is an opiate derivative like many others and that is its only similarity to H. I am sick of making sacrifices because someone else lacks self control or breaks the law. Its like gun laws.....the laws usually only hurt the legitimate end user not the criminal. They have already figured out how to defeat this new formula before it was the predominant product on the market. And while reading about the guy whose sister was addicted.....I can only say that she had to use it illegally in order to have the problem she did so making the new formula is not going to prevent new addicts. I also saw a show where the opium producers in the middle east have close to a 3 year stockpile. Even if we stomped out every poppy field it would take 3 years to eliminate opium from being supplied. And that doesn't include the legally grown poppy fields that are used for medical production.

spyz.. I think what is happening is your digestive system is metabolizing the op's too quickly.
Thanks to the new formula(I am being sarcastic) the op's will work ONLY if your digestive system
digest them properly..otherwise they go right through ones body intact.

I am also on oxycontin, i have an extremely rare, extremely painful disease that has no real treatment available beyond controlling the pain. Ive had allergic reactions to many pain medications including morphine & tramadol from which i had seizures. Im only 44yrs & have had this for about 14yrs. Its taken a long time to get to a place where the pain is controlled enough for me to have a bit of a life. Ive been on a stable dose of oc for the last 3-4 yrs & doing well. They have now been replaced with the new op & i understand it still has the same dose of pain relief in it but it doesnt work as the previous formulation did. Im happy it cant be abused by the wrong people, but for me & by what ive seen from other posts im not the only person, its not fair. I lost my whole life when i became sick, everything i did, my work, my horses, even having intercourse without being in agony- all gone....i had that one thing that helped me do some volunteer work & go to the occasional outing but now thats gone too. Im back to no sleep, way to much pain to be able to move, little knowing anything else. Whats the point of this....to save junkies from using one drug..they will just go back to whatever they took before. You have achieved nothing more than hurting the ppl the medication was made to help in the first case.

I've been extremely concerned since Australia changed over to the OP formula due to the plastic in it and the risk of cancer, as well as how long I have to wait after I swallow one (with a whole glass of water as advised) to get any pain relief. The OC formula would take 45 mins to give me relief, where as the OP formula takes from 45 mins to 90 mins & occassionally I don't seem to get much relief at all. I'm relieved Australia will soon have a generic OC formula available. I'm glad mundipharma's scam to keep the market for themselves backfired with their tamper resistant product. If they had any true concerns for people misusing their product why did they wait until their patent was set to expire before introducing it to the Australian market! It's all about $ and obviously the Australian government saw through their bulls***, thank god. Now the question is will they change back to the original formula when the generic hits the shelves? My guess is they will coz their set to loose billions.

sharby naloxone IS used to bring people out of a o.d yes however the official statement for having it with oxycodone in targins are that it STOPS CONSTIPATION as it is a diaretic however i think the real reason for it is to stop abuse but the official statement and what any pain specialist will tell you is its there to help with constipation. it IS in fact a dieretic and can be purchased as nalaxone alone as a dieretic. someone who has had severe dissabling chronic pain for 5 years has time to research everything i put in my body.
