Hi Michelle no I haven't tried ketamine except when it got slipped into my drink at a night club when I was younger it wasn't pleasant at all I was drunk already mind you I do not drink now haven't in 5 yrs! And I don't think I will be able to go on ketamine treatment as I haven't even heard any of the Drs using it where I am an I am not terminal and only 27yrs old so I doubt that and a big tip Michelle do not swap to Targin at all they say it's to help constipation but it has a 2:1 ratio of naloxone and oxycodone naloxone is to reverse the effects of opiates my dr told me that the it makes constipation a lot better is a cover its prescribed to younger people and Drs that are suspicious of drug abuse or seeking it hasn't had any trials really and there is no point in taking the oxycodone of your takmg a full opiate antagonist with it useless in my opinion have you tried oxynorm 20mg instant release capsules for breakthrough pain Michelle they work pretty great also I have heard fentanyl is great but very dangerous and puts your tolerance through the roof as its stronger than all the others

Hey Jay, yeah ive lost a couple of back teeth, but im holding on for dear life to the others! Waiting to have 2 root canals atm. I brush, floss & use listerine for my teeth at least twice a day & dont eat/drink sugary crap. I also take calcium, vit D, vit B, vit C & iron to boost my immune system & help my teeth/bones etc. the oxypowder sounds great but i cant have to much acid, it makes my bladder worse. I watch what i eat & use coloxl & lactulose for constipation, i am very viligent to make sure i stay regular as having the bowel obstuction scared the hell out of me, & led to so many other complications. I think the ketamin treatment could be beneficial for you Dox to help you get your dose down a bit. Have you had ketamin at all Jay? I would love to have other options, id go of these meds in a heart beat if i coukd cooe with the pain, but even with my high tolerence to pain its just to much. Theres another new opiot called Targin, its meant to be better for constipation & drowsiness. I cant take it as the dosage isnt high enough & theres Tramadol too, have either of you tried those? Has your pain spec done nerve blocks or other pain treatments Dox & Jay? I do try to keep positive Jay, ive never been a negative sort of person so i guess that helps, always the glass half full type of girl! I love life & want to get every little drop out of it, by dwelling on what you dont have or cant do your just wasting precious time, so I try to always stay happy & positive. Hi jay yes I'm 27 yrs old I have been on opiates for quite a fair few hrs now since I was 19yrs to 20yrs when I started them as I explained I done the swap to MS Contin when the new OxyContin reformulated came out and since I swapped to that I have had a few teeth problems
I've had two up the back near my wisdom teeth pulled recently I also had a front one pulled as the dentist started a root canal on it and it only needed a filling so I now have a gold front tooth! I haven't had any problems
With oxycodone and my teeth but the little time I was on MS Contin I noticed they were making my teeth bad and I had a constant dry mouth and drowsy every day where as the oxycodone makes me feel like it perks me up like it had amphetamine in it I know it doesn't that's just how it makes me feel! Now that I have swapped back from MS Contin 100mg 2x per day with 60x 20mg oxynorm 2x per day instant release per month now I have swapped back to the sandoz oxycodone brand 80mg 2 to 3 times a day and oxynorm 20mg 2 times a day and I am feeling 100 times better it's awesome to feel back to normal before they brought the horrible oxycontin reformulated out here

Hi Michelle, me too, I have lost all my teeth now. Had to spend a fortune and seven hours under anaesthetic to have six implants placed and have had to wait nine months before I can have my final teeth this month. It has been a nightmare and I went two weeks with no top teeth at all - I never left the house! I did not know how, many years ago when I first went on Oxycontin, that it would affect my teeth, and no one told me so I had to find out the hard way. I am getting old so it doesn't matter as much but we all need teeth, it would have been worse if I was younger to have to cope with.

Regarding the constipation issue. I have found a product that works for me called OxyPowder (nothing at all to do with Oxycontin) it is from the US but can be bought online from Australia. If interested, do a search online as I don't think I am allowed to put the link on here unfortunately. Anyway it works but it costs $120 for three bottles of 120 tablets each bottle. I take seven Oxypowder tablets at night with some form of acid (I eat an orange with it!) as you need acid for it to work. You go several times the next day and over time experiment to find what dose works best. To make it cheaper, I intersperse it every few days with Actilax, it's about ten dollars from the chemist and I find this works well but I have to take 50mls which is double the usual dose. I have used everything on the market plus alternatives and this regime works well for me.

I was told by my gasteoenterologist that one patient of his had to have a colostomy due to constipation caused by Oxycontin. Also, diet plays a part and I have zero appetite so I have to make myself eat some salad, veges etc.. but must stay away from too much fibre. Even doctors have told me to eat fibre which is a really stupid thing to say to someone on narcotics as it makes the problem worse due to our bowels being almost paralysed. Also, I find the Inner Health IBS tablets are helpful as using so much stuff to empty the bowel, removes all the good bacteria and so it needs to be replaced.

Also, I agree with you that the less pain medication one can take, the better. It can be got off altogether (I did it years ago, then went back on it after five months off of it...long story) but you have to be really determined and ready for the awful time of it all, a very slow taper is really the only way to go and some people do succeed. I toy with the idea every day and am trying to drop my dose which is very high like yours. I can drop it a bit. Do you know it stays in your body for five days, so until five days have passed you don't really feel the drop and then it hits you, that is why it has to be done really slowly. They say 'the lower you go, the slower you go' I know this doesn't apply to you Michelle but I thought others may find this interesting to know. You have to really want to do it.

Yeah Dox im better on the Sandoz generic, i do push things a bit to far but im not going to lay around & waIt to die, so when i make the pain worse i have myself to blame. You are young & the less meds you need to take the better as they take their toll on your body after a while, even the old formula. I cant stress enough the importance of making sure you dont get constipated (one of the worst side effects of any opiot) i ended up with a bowell obstuction so bad I was vomiting fecal matter-an experience i wouldnt wish on my worst enemy & had to have surgery. With my illness i lose a lot of blood & am anaemic often, which opens me up to any bugs going around. From that surgery i ended up contracting MRSA -superbug & it went through my system turning me septic, i was in quite a bit of trouble by the time i went to hospital (i dont remember, but was told by family & doctors) my blood pressure was really low, pulse very thready & an abscess had formed 2mm from my spinal cord. 3 weeks, 5 bags of blood & spinal surgery to remove abscess & dead tissue, i was able to leave hospital under 'hospital in the home care', nurses each day, 2 more months of intravenous anti biotics & weekly doctors appointments with neurosurgeon & infectious diseases pretty much cleaned up the end of last year. This is just to explain the sort of complications that i face on top of my disease, that the meds contribute to, another is my teeth have been destroyed from them. I hadnt had one filling before all this, now i have heaps & my teeth just crumble like chalk, from the opiot destroying calcium. Make sure you take a supplement every day of calcium & vitamin d, also vitamin b & vitamin c, all of which dont absorb as well with opiots. Its the long term damage im finding now, i wish i was told this years ago. Just getting back to ketamin Dox, it does come in tablet form i think but dont know about it as a daily treatment. You should be eligable for the inpatient pain treatment with it, even more so than terminal patients. Speak to your pain specialist about it, they are using it more & more in the fight to stop chronic pain before it takes hold. I volunteer at the Childrens Hospital & am seeing it used on the kids with great results, some patients have responded so well they have broken the pain signal & been able to go off pain meds altogether! It all depends on how you go with the side effects & whether it switches off your pain recepters. If it works, it can really work, you might find you can cut right down on your meds & get off them altogether after a few treatments! Then again it may not work at all, but for your type of injury its very positive. Hope that helps you. John its good to see you have changed your opinion about the reformulation, & realise its not addicts complaining cause they cant abuse it, but real patients like a few of us on here with real issues from the new formula. I think you will find your government getting some mighty hefty donations from Purdue Pharmaceuticals so they get to keep the majority of the perscriptions for opiot medications. The only way this will change for you is legitimet patients & their doctors all get together & fight to have choices for treatment. Its wrong on so many levels that patients with legitimate pain are not being helped, esp those who've defended your country. Best of luck.

Doxx, prior to taking the new formula, I was on ER Hydrocodone 90mg with 100 mg of Tylenol. It was made by a local compounding Pharmacy that is now out of business. So as a replacement my pain Dr. put me on Oxycontin ( the new version ). I hadn't taken the original version since the late 90's. I was put on 80mg - 3xday plus oxycodone for breakthrough pain. After thinking about it I can see why chronic pain patients are so mad even worse if a person had to go from the original to the new version over night. I suffer from stomach cramps and pain and of course the constipation is worse to. I just learned what the outer cover is made of - PLASTIC. I guess if we were fish people might be a bit more sympathetic but we are just people with 24 hour pain that few care about. Morphine makes me sick as a dog so I don't have any other choice. A generic for OC will in my opinion never happen in the states and right now there is a big push to ban Oxycontin all together. The new drug formula Zohydro has already been banned in most of our 50 states and its just ER Vicodin made up to a max dose of I think 60 or 80 mg. The FDA approved it and now no pharmacy will stock it or its illegal in the state to prescribe. Returning Combat Vets are being told to take anti depressants for their combat related injuries / my son is one of them, a former US Marine can only get a GOOD LUCK from his doctor for pain relief.
I have had more than 10 - Ten - operations on my back, my nerves are all pinched off and my condition is Acute, Chronic & Progressive. Throw is a fusion with screws to. I pray that one day we will all be able to get the relief we need but it scares me when I see the direction the US is headed when it comes to opiate use for pain. I can drink my self to death and its okay but take a pill and I'm a bad person.
Everyday I think : there is another person in worse shape than me, and that gets me by.

Yeah I have back pain
Kyphosis wedge fractures old shiermans disease in my back it developed when I was only 11 and made my back hunch a bit like scoliosis sort of I have spondylitis and lots of other big names for problems in my back to name! Ok I thought ketamine may am have been in pill form and could be used in conjunction with my oxycodone to keep the tolerance where it is for me my tolerance went up due to the new oxycontin reformulated as I am not terminal and only 27yrs old they most likely will not give me that treatment I don't want any extra addictive meds either as every one I am on is a shedule 8 controlled drug except for the valium it's s4 as was the xanax/kalma but it is now s8 I am aloud to take 3x 80mg tablets if I want as I get 3 boxes of oxycodone Mr per month and 60 oxynorm 20mg I Use them for breakthrough a lot instead of having 3 oxycodone Mr everyday! The oxycodone sandoz are working perfect like the the old ones any old ones oxycontin Refomormulated will be going in the bin are you feeling back to normal and find the oxycodone sandoz 80mg tablets work the same if not better than the old ones Michelle ?

Hey Dox all good, ive had this for 14yrs & still here going strong. I dont know when that will change but atm its contained in my bladder which is great (beside the pain, that is) Its an extremely rare disease i have with only around 200 documented cases in history of medicine, really sux id much rather win tattslotto than be the lucky owner of this! Ive been in communication with a few others who have EC but they have all passed, so i no longer seek people out its just depressing. As for Ketamin treatments, they are done in hospital. Its intravenous & starts on a low dose which increases over a few days to top dosage & is left on for about 10 days (varies person to person) if it works for you, it can be extremely effective & help you to lower your opiot dosage. The side effects are usually mild with vivid dreams, but sometimes people (like myself) have full on hallucinations & heightened sensory function, i cant stand it but others dont mind. Valium actually helps limit those effects so you would probably find it not to bad. Even if your not able to lower your dosage, it can give you a 'holiday' from the pain as it disrupts the nerve pain signals, thats why ive tried the treatment a few times (even though i didnt get the desired results). It eliminates very quickly from your body once treatment is stopped & does not affect opiot tolerance as its an anaesthetic not an opiot. If i remember right you have back issues? It may be a great way to go as it works well for bone & muscle pain. Have a chat to your pain specialist about it Dox, its only done by them not GP's or surgeons, its very specialised. Im 45 & have been sick for 14 yrs roughly (well since diagnosed anyhow) you have a long life ahead of you, so the less of these meds you need to take the better. Ive had pretty much every pain treatment there is, surgical, meds & natural so have plenty of knowledge on the subject. One other thing is I have Oxycontin 3 times a day, & its more stable, i don't need breakthrough tablets. If you need more info feel free to ask, happy to help. Cheers

That's not good to hear Michelle i am 27 and my current dose of oxycodone per day is 200mg minimum to 280mg my daily doses are as followed
2x80mg oxycodone 12hourly can have an extra 80mg I get 3 boxes per month
20mg x 2 oxynorm instant release per day
5mg of valium/antennex x2 to 3 when required for spasm
Xanax/kalma 2mg 2x per day
For my panic disorder This also potentiates my opioid medications
Get lorazepam 2.5 mg for sleep also don't use them every night though

Michelle with the ketamine treatment if i ask my dr for them ketamine tablets will it keep my opiate tolerance where it is as I don't want it to go up any more the only reason it went up because the OxyContin reformulated didn't work and had horrible side effects instead of changing meds then they kept upping the dose of the oxycontin reformulated I said I didn't want that so that's when I swapped to the morphine MS Contin it's not bad but it makes you very drowsy the oxy is almost like a stimulant to me it helps me up and about to do things I normally

Sorry to hear you are terminal that's not nice to hear at all :( that's great you have got the oxy old formula back like me I am not terminal like you but am only 27rs old and have been on these since I was 22. my daily dose of oxycodone is 200 minimum up to 280mg daily I take 2x 80mg oxycodone sandoz 12 hours apart I am aloud 3 per day I get 3 boxes per month!
I take 20mg of oxynorm instant relief caps 2x per day for breakthrough and Valium for my spams and other problems I have
I also take 2mg of xanax 2x per day now for panic disorder and agrophobia I can only get generics since it went to s8 in April this year the brand name won't distribute here in aus now! I have a high lot of trust and respect with my Drs and pharmicist they know I do not abuse or divert my medications I despise those who do that's why the oxycontin reformulated came out and it's horrific :) also my pharmicist will only order the sandoz oxycodone in for trustworthy patients they don't stock it and the other chemist in my town won't order it for anyone full stop they treat everyone as drug addicts I refuse to go there if you ever want to talk about pain or meds or anything Michelle I'm always open for a discussion! Also thanks for all the updates I will keep posting in this forum as soon as new generics come out I will try them and give my opinion to you Michelle. I am really enjoying life again when I was on the morphine I was that drowsy all the time almost on the nod like a H addict but I rather have them side effects as opposed to the OxyContin reformulated! I have had a new generic at 830 and it's working fine I have had oxynorm on top also these work really well it sucked it took so long for them to come on pbs

Good to hear Dox! Im on a much higher dose than you, much higher than most people to be honest, but im on long term palliative care & keeping me as comfortable as posdible is all they can do. It does freak doctors who dont know me out though, lol if im at a different hospital i always get the whole pain department come & see me, they realise after though that its all legit & the only course of action my doctors have, so i have no problems. Because of my sensitivity to so many medications i cant do opiot rotations to keep my dosage down, & after putting up with horrific hallucinations to have ketamin treatment 4 times, we had to admit it doesnt help me (but for many ketamin treatments are fantastic & help people reduce their opiot dose & if done early in the piece can actually break the pain signal) ive seen it being used more these days, esp in helping kids with chronic pain. If you havent heard of it, that goes for anyone on here, you should speak with your pain specialist. The only time i have it now is when ive been to sick to take tablets & they cant give intravenous morphine in high enough dose for me so add the ketamin & medazalam. Its short acting, but when you do a treatment your admitted for about 10 -14 days, they start on low dose & increase it over a few days to maximum then you stay on that (a continuous drip) for the rest of the time. If its working they can reduse your opiot at same time. Anyway thought it was worth the mention as i havent written about it before. Cheers.

Hi everyone I have now swapped back to oxycontin from the Ms Contin 100mg 2x per day I swapped to i am not drowsy any more morph makes you very drowsy! I am taking the new oxycodone sandoz 80mg 2x per day I can have a 3rd one if needed with 2 to 3 oxynorm 20mg instant release for breakthrough pain also and I am feeling back to normal no more horrible side effects like oxycontin reformulated they suck and so do mundipharma. they will cave soon and probably try and bring there old formula back out as everyone I know has swapped to the sandoz oxycodone brand as they all got the horrible side effects. The new oxycodone sandoz are great they last a long time kick in a few times though the day and last longer than the old ones I take a lot of opiates legitamally I Have a very high tolerance also take xanax/kalma 2mg for panic disorder and agrophobia and Valium/antenex 5mg for back and muscle spasm! Good news guys is more generics of the old oxycontin formula are coming out also expect

Sorry John but here in Australia we have the old version of OxyContin back in a generic version sandoz oxycodone thank God our goverment has compassion for us with chronic pain that do not abuse our medications! If the reformulated version works for you great but you will end up with side effects that are horribly unbearable

Hi jay I know we all get them on pbs but I was stating our prices for one months medication to john who said its $3000 for one months supply in the usa!i have went back to sandoz oxycodone cr 80mg 2x per day today but cannot try them yet as I had 100mg of morphine this morning God damn the Ms Contin makes me very drowsy and is not as effective for pain in my opinion! I have a few old formula OxyContin brand tablets left I want to compare the new sandoz ones to them and jay it would be great if they lasted longer :) I'm so happy to have got them the chemists in my town will not stick them they will only order them for trustworthy patients

Now you can finally relax and stop worrying so much! You will feel much better. I too did the swop to MSContin and it was awful, I went straight back to the new Sandoz and you will be pleased to know it works really well and I think it even lasts a bit longer than the old one. You won't feel horrible like on the reformulation and you will soon be back to your old self and finally Doxx - yes, we all get it on the PBS!

I find it amazing how your outlook changed so quickly from one post John!! Its great to see, but it also shows that even people as yourself (with pain issues & on these meds) listen to the defamative statements made by Purdue, Mundipharma & narrow minded doctors. There have been terrible side effects from the reformulation, & the worst issue is in some people the Poly doesn't completely metabolize, so in those people the full dose of medication is not absorbed. Its basically a type of silicon made from carcinogenic chemicals, with no true testing to see the damage this will do to bodies short term & absolutely no trials long term. The whole reformulation as a way to stop people abusing this drug was a convenient cover, the pharmaceutical companies really don't care about anything but the $. If it was about abuse, why didnt Australia get the new formula 3 yrs ago when they brought it out in the US, they waited till the very month that the patent they had on the original formula expired. Thankfully our governing bodies in Australia, feel we need options & weren't railroaded into banning the original formula. The generic option is left up to doctors, who can offer each option or choose themselves which they think is suitable for their patient. We also have an authority bases for the prescription of these meds long term. Each month the doctor has to ring for an authority, so there are checkpoints if a patient takes more than prescribed & each year they issue a new permit, that needs the approval from your pain specialist & GP. I dont know how it works in the US, but it sounds like genuine patients are not being cared for properly. I dont judge anyone, I know those addicted to drugs are often in a life they didnt choose, but many started taking drugs for fun despite all the warnings. Why should those committing crimes, be cared about over those who are in pain from illness or injury as it sounds whats happening there. I have an illness that is rare, extremely painful & debilitating with no treatment or cure beyond pain relief. Oxycodone is the only painkiller i can take with out side effects & then the new formula came out & put that in jeopardy. If we didnt have the PBS (Pharmaceutical benefits scheme), I wouldnt be able to pay for it as it would cost me over $900 a month. So for those on low income as I am, we pay $7.50 per script so I pay $15 a month. We also have Medicare (public health system) so we get free treatment in public hospitals, I know you dont have that either in the US. We really live in the lucky country here in Australia! Jay as always you provide great information. John, I hope you explain the truth of this medication to others & you get the options in your country that we have here. Cheers people & Merry Christmas

I am from Australia and I am swapping back to my original OxyContin from morphine it is the old formula as we now have a generic brand out in Australia called sandoz oxycodone cr I am taking 100mg of morphine 2x per day and 20mg 2x per day oxynorm instant release oxy no apap I am swapping back to 80mg x2 per day of the old formula sandoz oxycodone cr brand and it costs me $6 dollars per script for a months of morphine/OxyContin cr same price with my oxynorm $6 for 60x 20mg capsules! I am so happy they have overturned mundipharma and allowed the old formula back into Australia can't wait 2 days until I swap back and life will be back to normal! sorry to hear the situation in America buddy

I'm in the States where Uncle Sam is making it a priority to ban just about every form of scheduled pain med.
Accidental overdose is the new term they use now even Phillip Semoure Hoffman's death was called accidental.

What's really sad is the returning veterans that suffered horrible painful wounds are now given only anti depressants. My son suffers from chronic pain after his MRAP was hit by an IED. It's terrible what our country is doing.

My injury is work related and after eleven back operations my pain is Acute, Chronic and Progressive. My Pain Dr. Gives me the meds I need but now my employer is trying to take me off them because of the cost.

I think now I know why I have stomach pain, bloating, gas and the other side effects you mentioned. As far as I know there is no generic for the old OC but I will find out.

Thanks, I'm not one to lash out after I get a reply post - better to reflect and think about what was said. Sounds like your system has its benefits over ours in the US. Retail for name brand OxyContin is nearly $3000 for 90 pills.

Stay in touch and if or when the laws change I will keep you posted. I agree with you 100% about the issues sorounding the use of the drug but we need to get the masses to see the big picture.

John, are you in the USA or in Australia? I know they tried to ban the generics in the US but I did not know if they succeeded?. The company that make the 'reformulation' here in Oz, tried to stop Sandoz from making the generic version (because until this happened, they had a total monopoly on production of this drug) but they were not successful. More generics are about to become available in the new year. I feel really sorry for those condemned to have to take the reformulation, as we were until recently. Once off them, It is like being given your usual life back.

Also, in Australia we are extremely fortunate that all our PBS medications are subsidized by the the government (although we are highly taxed!) which means we do not experience the same financial strain as people on this medication in the USA. Generics also save the government money as well so it is to their advantage for people to use them as they cost them less.

My opinion is that no matter why anyone takes these meds, legally or not, no one deserves to be put in a position where their health is deliberately put at risk. People who are illegally addicted deserve the same compassion we give to anyone who is suffering and not to be given even more problems to try and cope with. I do not believe anyone chooses to be a 'drug addict' it happens and then they are trapped in a prison with no walls. If it were easier to get off narcotics, I truly think most people would stop using them. I have chronic pain and I know I would cease if I could but I have too much pain to do so. I know Oxycontin in the US has been given a lot of judgmental and negative coverage and it is frustrating to be a person with chronic pain who feels we have been made to suffer due to others illegal usage - and yet still regardless, I do feel sadness for anyone caught in this traumatic situation.
