Hi. 2 weeks ago, dentist prescribed Amoxicillin prior to having an abscessed molar removed and synthetic bone graft with stitches. After extraction, he gave me Zithromax for 5 days. When I returned to have stitches removed, I still had the infection...so dentist prescribed Clindamycin 250 mg, x4 a day, for 7 days. I am on day 1. So far so good, no side effects...but still have pain, that I have taken Motrin for.
Why didn't the infection go away by now? Thanks!

Hello, Cathy! How are you?

It is becoming more and more common for some infectious bacteria to develop resistant to some antibiotics and unfortunately, this is the type of problem that can arise from that. Some doctors prescribe multiple antibiotics to take at once, sometimes, they will just have you try different ones to see which one will finally work. Ideally, the infection should be cultured to determine its origins and discover which antibiotic is required.

The FDA lists typical antibiotic side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

Is there anything else I can help with?
