Why Is Actifed Banned (Page 3)

Updated

I'm looking for the old formulation of Actifed.

Are there any countries that still sell it?

I know you can use it to make drugs, but it's the only thing that works for me (and it helps me sleep too).

I would not have ANY problem having the FBI at my house if I could get some. They'd be sitting on my shelf just exactly like my 16 bottles of shampoo, 42 bars of soap and 18 boxes of bandaids (I'm not a hoarder, I just hate running out of stuff...and stupidly, before that stuff went away, I didn't buy a ton of it).

The stuff they sell behind the counter is a reformulation....it's different.

I buy it at Walgreens behind the counter. It called Walfed. Works great

OMG Yes! we can thank methamphetamine cooks for ruining it for the rest of us...i was actually prescribed the original formula as a child when my family left california for illinois. The change in flora affected me severely. I'm 51 now and just left maryland for texas and OMG what i wouldn't give for a prescription to the old formula as it's no longer available over the counter.

Why did they take it off the market? It was the only thing that worked for me.

Walgreens wal-act d uses same formula as original actifed. Make sure you ask for wal-act d with the emphasis on "d"

I doubt it is the same exact Actifed.

Well after googeling & reading your comments for 2 hours this morning as a fellow stuffy nose suffer, I found my local Hannaford (formally Stop & Shop) carries the Aprodine product, and it has the same ingredients as the OLD Actifed that actually worked. Here is the best part, it was ONLY $1.54 per 24/Cnt Box!!! That is nuts! I would have bought a case of it at that price but the crack heads have made that impossible.I'm waiting for the junk I took this morning to wear off before I try this, but expect the same relieving results that Actifed always gave me.

The original formula for Actifed contained pseudoephedrine hydrochloride 60 mg as the nasal decongestant and triprolidine hydrochloride 2.5 mg as the antihistamine. However, in response to widespread laws requiring products containing pseudoephedrine to be kept behind the pharmacy counter, Pfizer changed Actifed's U.S. formula in late 2006 to contain chlorpheniramine maleate 4 mg as the antihistamine and phenylephrine HCl 10 mg as the nasal decongestant.[2] Many users of the old formula have complained that the new formula is not as effective at relieving their symptoms. Other brands available behind the counter that use the old formula include Genac and Aprodine. The American pharmacy chain Walgreens produced a house-brand version of Actifed, Wal-Act, which used the original pseudoephedrine/triprolidine formula.[3]

In the UK, Germany, Italy, and Thailand the formulation remained unchanged. The product is available Over-the-counter as a pack of 12 tablets produced by McNeil. Each tablet contains Triprolidine hydrochloride 2.5 mg and Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride 60 mg.

In Germany, the product is marketed under the registered trademark Rhino PRONT.

I want to thank everyone on this thread; I have been suffering for the past two days and was despondent when I found that Actifed had been discontinued. Just found this thread, and went to Walgreen this morning and pick up Wal-Act. One pill and 20 minutes later, relief. Thank you all!! Now it’s time to stock up

Actifed original formula improved my life greatly. In the last ten years every time I asked for Actifed I was directed to another product that sounds similar but starts with an Sud. The problem is it does not work for me. This Thread introduced me to Wal-Act, readilly available at Wallgreens but is kept behind the counter. Finally Relief. Thank you.

Just bought Wal-Act today at Walgreens. It is the exact same formulation as original Actifed. It is behind the counter and needs to be signed for.

Wal-Act D is not available, I asked today.
The plain Wal-Act is.

I am so glad to find this old post. I haven't suffered from allergies in years but find myself really suffering. After trying the newer meds with no relief I remembered I had some old Actifed. 1 pill and I was clearing up. I only have a few. I guess I will have to buy Wal-act. It is the only similar product I can find in the US.

Oh my gosh - I just looked that up on Major Pharm website - they do have it listed. I took Actifed growing up for my allergies - only thing that worked. I'm now experiencing some different allergies or something at age 47 and am not finding anything that seems to help much. Maybe good old Actifed would do the trick today. Thanks so much - really!!

Walgreens brand called Wal act. Is the closest. They keep it behind counter and you have to sign for it but it's no big deal. 8 bucks. Still works the best

I really suffer terribly with allergies and sinus since coming to live in NZ. I am house bound and in tears some days when I get it. Actifed (original) was my life savior on these days. I have tried many other medications with no success. Allergies have definitely spoiled my quality of life. Those despicable drug dealers have really spoiled it for the ones who really really need it.

I'm in Texas. I'm the same way. I found Wal-Act at Walgreens. It's the only thing that helps me and my daughter that is allergic to EVERYTHING outside. It's the closest thing we have found to Actifed. She also Uses Flonase with the actifed. I can't because of the smell... hope this helps.

This is the accurate answer. I am a pharmacist. Also, because it has pseudoephedrine it is now something you must ask the pharmacist for and sign using your driver license. It is tough to find, but can also be special ordered and is usually very inexpensive.

I'm currently in Southern Idaho and I just bought Wal-Act at Walgreen's... 48 tablets for $7.99. It was behind the pharmacy counter and had to show my ID. It has the same ingredients as original Actifed. It was always the only thing that worked for me. That's not to say that EVERY Walgreen's will carry it. It might be something that is left up to the pharmacist in each location. So to those who say that Walgreen's doesn't carry it anymore, that is incorrect. Might just be your area Walgreen's that doesn't carry it. I also saw a post where someone was saying it was the "Wal-Fed" and that is incorrect. Wal-Fed is Walgreen's brand of Sudaphed. Wal-Act is what you're after. Thanks.

Hi..I read this thread hoping to find the exact ingredients of Actifed...All I found is what I already know..The original formula for Actifed contained pseudoephedrine hydrochloride 60mg as the nasal decongestant and triprolidine hydrochloride 2.5mg as the antihistamine. There must be something else!! I went to my pharmacist and he found me something that had exactly those two ingredients. I was so happy, came home and guess what - it did not work!!

Do you ever get the feeling like you got water in your nose and it hurts on the roof of your mouth? Actifed would dry that up right away and let you get a good sleep. This formula did not do that and I tossed and turned with no relief. If any of you have the old actifed boxes can you please send me the 'exact ingredients' besides the pseudoephedrine hydrochloride and triprolidine hydrochloride - there must be something else they added in addition to this!! The above ingredients alone did not deliver the actifed results I have been accustomed to over the years.
