Why Did The Dr Switch Me From Hydrocodone 7.5/325 To Tylenol 3?
UpdatedI had a spinal fusion on Nov 8, 2016... 6 week checkup w/ PA on Dec 20th... Trochanteric Bursitis... Shots given in each hip... She had renewed my prescription of Hydrocodone 7.5/325 before seeing me... I was in horrible pain, told her I couldn't believe she'd switched medication strength prior to seeing me, so she prescribed original Hydrocodone 10/325 and Naproxen 500mg 2x daily... Approx. day 4, "Ah! Relief everywhere I swear! So... I put away the Hydro 10's (40 remained) and stepped down to the 7.5's." I was taking 2 every 6 hours, at one particular dose about an hour and a half later, "Woohoo!" At this point, I took the pills down to 1 every 6 hours, comfortable, able to continue my PT... Tried getting off the medication on my own Jan. 11th to the 15th & Jan. 18th to the 25th supplementing Hydro 7.5/325 2x daily w/ Extra Strength Tylenol as the 3rd Hydro didn't work... Pain level increased... By the 23rd I was a complete mess in PT, emotional mess! 12 week checkup w/ Surgeon on Jan 30, 2017... Feeling fine, told him what I had done, 10's to 7.5's (41 remained)... 6 too many and why, 'Woohoo'... Stepped to 3... Decided it was time to put me in PT, "Already there! :D ..." So... He changes the Hydrocodone to Tylenol #3... Had to take 6 daily... It was straight downhill from that point on! Descended to the floor of HELL!... I was on Tylenol #3, Diazepam 50mg 2x daily (in all the research, it's a big No No mixed w/ Tylenol #3) Naproxen and my daily dose of Levothyroxine... Last call in for Tylenol #3 I believe was Feb. 24th as there were enough to get thru' Weds., morning (took 2 at waking) Mar. 1st. I did not get the refill until Mar. 3rd and did not resume taking them until the morning of Mar. 4th (12 remained), took 2-Tylenol Extra Strength Mar 2., before bed, in pain, fortunately cat brought me out of a sleep, dreaming I couldn't breathe, "Reality... I could not BREATHE!" Weaned myself from the Diazepam from the 6th - 19th due to hallucinations (discovered this was the drug causing such and also discovered all the nightmares, bad dreams that begin after surgery, most likely due to this medication. DAMN!) 18 week checkup w/ PA, Mar. 20th. Yes, last Monday (I don't think she likes her job), attitude and "Why are you in so much pain this far out?! You shouldn't be in this much pain this far out! 'Yeah, I don't think so either and not anyone wants out of pain more than I do.' (Told her I dropped the Tylenol #3 on the 4th from 6 to 3 daily... "Our goal is to get you off the drugs." 'There's not anyone who wants off these drugs more than I do!" The last Tylenol #3 I had taken was 2 the morning before the 19th... At this time my pain level has risen to a good 6 and was continually climbing, I hear, "What! So you could show us?!" (Told her I had not had any Tylenol #3 since the morning before and I had weaned off the Diazepam and 'Yeah, I kind of wanted to check in w/ my body and see where my pain level is.'). The goal is to get me off the drugs, only to tell me to take 4 Tylenol #3 and take the morning Naproxen w/ the Tylenol #3... It was not a pleasant visit, once again, accused of not doing anything on my part and that was why I was in such pain... As I left in tears, 'goal is to get you off the drugs, you tell me 4, when I been taking 3... I refuse to take anymore.' I learned Tues., thru' much research what I had been experiencing was Opiate Induced Hyperalgesia... And... Mon., was the beginning of withdrawal... As each day is arriving, so much is calming down... I know I will not know my actual 'pain level' for at least a month... No, not the surgeon or anyone on his team said one word to me about the possibility of this happening, not one! I did 'FINALLY' receive a return call from his office yesterday (apparently they did not receive my message to call me last week, right! Like they have not returned a call from our conversation on the phone yesterday with unanswered questions). I wanted their practice to know the Ascend from Hell I doing, "No thanks to anyone informing me and not anyone catching it!" She said, "We're sorry you had to go thru' this, I will be sure Dr. and everyone knows." So ... Why Did the Surgeon Feel the Need to Go To Tylenol #3, then continue to refill at that dose? Why did he not walk me off the Hydro 7.5/325 when he had seen me on Jan. 30th? I so do not want this to happen to anyone else! I HIGHLY ADVISE AGAINST Cold Turkey, but they obviously were not doing anything to help me get off the medications! I am now on my thyroid medication, Turmeric and using body rubs Deep Blue and Arni-care... I am quite upset w/ the Medical Professionals right now!
