Why Am I Itching From Using Metoprolol Tar 25mg - 2x

I have been taking lisinopril 20mg - 2x for a long time. Earlier this year I was given carvedilol 6.25mg - 2x along with above. Shortly thereafter, I reduced the carvedilol ato 1x. A month ago my systolic bp rose. Dr. said to increase carvedilol by taking 2 a day. Upon doing this I started experiencing a rash and itching all over. Dr. then took me off this and prescribed metoprolol tar 25mg 2x with the same reaction of rash and itching and no improvement in bp. Why all the sudden reaction to these drugs?

Hello, John! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you're having.

Both the Carvedilol and Metoprolol are classified by the FDA as beta blockers, so my best guess is that you may have developed an allergy to this medication category. This happens frequently, such as when someone develops an allergy to Penicillin and then discovers that they are also allergic to all other antibiotics in the category, such as Amoxicillin.

Our bodies do change with time, so it's always possible to suddenly develop an allergy to a medication or other substance.

However, such allergic reactions do tend to get worse with repeated exposure, so it's very important to contact your doctor and switch to another medication.

Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor, so you may want to speak to your doctor about trying a different one of them, such as Benazepril, Perindopril or Ramipril.

The FDA lists their typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain, increased urination and hypotension.
