My dr. has been giving me 30 mg morphine immediate release for several years. I just had my prescription filled and noticed that my new ones say SR.I'm sure it was a mistake and my dr. and I never had any discussion about it. The pharmacy is closed now but I need my medicine. So since I am used to the 30 mg IR already, why would it hurt to crush or cut open the same amount of mg in SR? I can't wait until the pharmacy opens again tomorrow afternoon.

Theoretically your reasoning makes good sense, and in light of that I don't see why it would hurt to do so. However, for the sake of taking it as prescribed, only your doctor can legally tell you what you should or should not do to achieve a certain level of pain relief. While I personally wouldn't cut any time-released medication in half, it goes without saying that only you know how your body reacts to certain dosages; and so in the meantime you'd be doing whatever is deemed necessary at your own discretion based on prior experience... Sorry I couldn't provide a more definitive answer, but I hope everything has turned out well since you last posted!
