I am in a confusing debate with my ex husband: Which is stronger, 30 mg of morphine sulfate E.R or 10 mg of methadone?

This person is highly misinformed. I have been taking 10 mg methadone for almost a year for chronic back and leg pain and recently switched to Morphine ER 15 mg every 8 hrs. The Methadone had been becoming less effective over the period of the year so it was time for a change as Methadone has some undesirable effects such as breathing problems encountered by some patients.

The Morphine ER is WAY less effective for my chronic pain relief than the Methadone even after the effects of the Methadone had become less helpful.

I'm no doctor but since taking the Morphine ER for three weeks I would estimate it is 1/4 to 1/8th as effective mg vs mg.

Tanya is 100% wrong. Don't take her advice. It is dangerous. If you are used to taking 45 mg of Morphine daily as I am now and you pop 40 mg of methadone down your pie hole it could kill you. No joke!

I bet you feel your better than an "opioid addict", but many of us started on pain meds.. sick of doctors ****ing us around, over priced, insurance costs, and ignorant people like you… many of us started taking diacetly morphine which was originally released by the bayer company... so before you start telling yourself your better than us.. im a pharmacist, and a functioning addict.. i make more money, drive better cars, and have 3 houses.. you're not better than me.. its always one person that wrecks it for everyone.. ignorant, self-important, people like you are the reason the world is like this... making less so the stupid people dont accidentally kill themselves... let them. its called natural selection.. by the way most of us are paying around 400$ a month for our methadone. Almost every drug is controlled or illegal. while the most ignorant destructive drug ALCOHOL, is legal, just because the majority enjoys it.

I was just prescribed Morphine 30mg x 2 on Friday. I was on Vicodin 10mg 6 times a day with Percocet for breakthrough pain. My second dose of morphine gave me very bad chest tightness and because the morphine was ER I would get the chest pains every 20-30 minutes. My Doctor said there are other medications to try. I'd like to research some he may prescribe so I'm informed about his next suggestion. If I had a bad reaction to morphine does that rule out taking morphine in any other form? What other medication is comparable to morphine? Many thanks for your help.

Your experience/lack there of is infuriating.

I switched from 10mg x 2 methadone to 15 mg morphine ER x 3 and am WRACKED with pain !! still after 3 weeks.

I go in for my first adjustment in a week after switching DRs to consolidate my general primary DR and pain management needs.

I hope your ignorant post hasn't damaged anyone's pain management if a physician inadvertently stumbled upon it.

SHAME on you !!

I've been In the same problem, if ur in p.a go to upmc general and internal medicine. I got my pain meds there, which is methadone. its the best pain killer there is. Ask him why he lied about a fake law and tell him u recorded it. He will give in, trust me. I talk to a doctor no different than I talk to a regular person, cause some doctors need checked on there no pain medication bull s*** lol. it should be judged case by case and its not.

I'm in England, so apologies for 'gate-crashing' this forum :-) In my personal experience, as well as what I do know in pharmacology...
Methadone (particularly as hydrochloride salt) is more potent than morphine. Mainly due to - oral methadone having a higher bioavailability - up to 98%, oral morphine salt at around 50 - 60% (very approx.) But, it seems that the opiates that are directly-derived from opium, have a more noteable euphoric-effect than opioids which are synthetic or semi-synthetic. Once you've passed tolerance for the likes of morphine and codeine, you have to expect a 'less-natural' euphoric effect with the synthetic and 'altered' opioids. Compared to morphine, methadone acts on both u-opioid and o-opioid receptors. Morphine will occupy mainly u-receptors (higher concentration). And as diamorphine is twice more potent than morphine (both oral), logically methadone would be at least twice the potency of oral morphine. I believe taking the drug diphenhydramine along-side methadone, seems to increase effect just a little bit. But I think that due to its mimicking of a serotonergic action - like that of tramadol. Sorry, i'm blubbering! haha. This is only my opinion, and I know that I probably know very little compared to most of u, so please don't think i'm trying to come-across as though 'I know best'... lol. Lastly... (I promise!)... I can't imagine the difficulty and pain ur relatives are having to deal with, so I can only empathise :-( But, do inquire with their G.P. about introducing and axiolytic, even (surprisingly), and anti-psychotic - namely haloperidol or Levomepromazine - even if its a very small dose, and a drug that will increase serotonin-levels in the brain (particularly the SSRI's) as their sedative and anticholinergic effects and increased serotonin - both help deal with pain, incorporating a psycho-somatic affect of increased pain-relief from the opioid(s).

I AM A CHRONIC PAIN PATIENT. HAVE BEEN FOR OVER A DECADE. CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHY AFTER BEING PRESCRIBED 130mg / day OF METHADONE FOR OVER 8 YEARS WITH NO PROBLEMS, I'M NOW BEING CUT DOWN TO 30mg/day ?? WHILE IF I CHOOSE I CAN GO TO A METHADONE CLINIC AND BE STARTED OF WITH 50mg/day AND QUICKLY MOVE UP TO 290mg/day. THIS IS THE REALITY HERE IN WA STATE. WHEN I BRING THIS FACT UP TO MY PAIN DOCTOR, THERE IS NO PLAUSIBLE EXPLANATION. THE DOCTOR ACTUALLY GETS PISSED OFF AT ME FOR ASKING THE QUESTION, AND HAS TOLD ME IF I DONT LIKE TO SEEK ANOTHER DOCTOR.

Your dumb man..idk what clinic your talking about but the clinics in Ohio don't do that kinda stuff..they don't make you ask permission to leave town first off..and that don't keep increasing your dose either the highest anyone can be on is 200mg a day and after a year they start to bring you down on your dose..and most people in the clinic program are there 2 maybe 3years at the most so u might wanna experience the stuff yourself befor you just start talking stupid stuff..not everyone is addict's and clinic are met to help addiction that's what they are put on this earth for man. The reason I go is cause I was on fentnyal 100mcg every 48hrs and oxy 20mg every 8hrs for break through pain and the doc I was seeing for over 13,yes past away unexpectedly and insted of going through the hell of trying to find a different doc I decided to get off the meds and methadone's helped a lot not only with the withdrawal but with my pain so its all good..but anyway like I said u might want to experience things first hand before you start talking like you know it all..obviously u don't know about how clinics work.thanks

Report him to the medical board or better yet talk to an attorney and file a legal suit for cruel and unusual punishment, but before you do try and stock up on your methadone.

Where did u get your information from a book or a study of addicts, a servay at a clinic? Or did someone just tell u that? And if it were a book it might be about half right. Because basically you are saying if someone is on 80 mg of methadone they can take 800 mg of morphine n be ok?

The only true way to get off methadone, is to slowly drop your dose to like 20-30mg, then convert to opiates. Make sure it's a known brand. After converting, take the opiates for at least 2 weeks to get you completely off methadone pain free. Then tapper down every 12 hours. After that, kick the sheets, use sleeping medication to help sleep...after about 2 weeks, you're done. This info is for people that are methadone addicts that want to get off it.

I take topamax for migraines works great been on everything as far as doans go im at 80mgs a day plus perc 10/325 for breakthrough pain works well l4/l5 problems for 6yrs mich pain doc started me on everything best was fetanyl patch but they are very expensive without insurance

I've been going to Pain Management for the last 10 years for lower back pain so severe that I can't even get out of bed some days, and so days I can't even lay down the pain is so intense. I would find a new Doctor and start from scratch. Your not getting anywhere with this Clown you going to so what could it hurt. I've taken every ER and IR med that isn't off the can in price and you need to find that perfect med that suits your level of pain the best. move along to a new Doctor.
