I am in a confusing debate with my ex husband: Which is stronger, 30 mg of morphine sulfate E.R or 10 mg of methadone?

Methadone is stronger than Morphine, just as an example, if you were taking the 30mgs of Morphine, the equivalent dosage of Methadone would only be 3mgs, so it's a roughly 1mg to 10mg ratio.

Frank, I really feel for you my husband is 45 and has had 5 back surgeries, he has been on everything from Oxycontin to Fentanyl lollipops ( which was a very bad). He is now on Methadone 175mg a day and he is pain free. He has bad days and good days but for the most part he is doing well. We live in NJ and all the docs here think your a drug addict when you ask for a medication that works for you such as Methadone. The only way he could get this medication was to join a Methadone Clininc in Newark, NJ, so now once a month he goes and stands in line with all the people that are abusing the system by doing drugs and getting free Meth from Medicaid. It is a real shame that people like you and my husband have to suffer in silence and do what the doctor says. Most of these doctors have not had a day of pain in their lives and they base their recommendation for medication on information they have read in a medical journal instead of listening to their patient. I am sorry this is happening to you and I hope you will be able to get what you need. Hang in there.

Same boat here my friend! They will only write me 30 mgs a day here in Alabama. I've been on MD now for 10+yrs woth no dorty ua's I n 4 yrs. Also have DDD and got the same reaction when I said that I javent had a new MRI in bout 10yrs. Duh, its called Degenerative! ! Ugh! These doctors need to walk a mile in mine! Then tell me that I will just have to bear it!!

You are wrong about the half-life of both these drugs. Both are MUCH shorter. Look it up on PubMed or other online opiate charts on medical sites

Not so... Where do you get your pharmacy info? If you are going 30 mg of morphine, the equivalent would be 3 mgs of methadone.

I have been on methadone since 1992. I am now on 200 mg Q.D.
I also have to stand in line once a month. But I have to pay $234.00 for my methadone. I am a veteran. I have no insurance. But I have the VA Hospital. The doctors there do not give out more then two weeks of liquid methadone at a time. The clinic I go to once a month gives me 40 mg wafers. I think there is a big difference between Mallincrodt Methadose liquid and Jannson Labs 40 mg methadone wafers. One has time release , one does not. One last 24hours, one lasts about 12 hours.
I was diagnosed with prolongation of the QT interval in 2006. I still m on 200mg Q.D. The doctor at the clinic said that as long as I do not take one f the other drug that prolong the QT interval with my methadone, there will not be any problem.
He gave me the list of drugs that prolong the QT Interval. Ost, ther then Viagra are not at all common. Unfortunately doctors who know alot about methadone, are few and far between. Most doctors do not like methadone, so the do not read about it r prescribe it. Other then giving a patient 20mg B.I.D, or maybe T.I.D. for twenty days. They know nothing past that.
Frank, there must be a methadone clinic in your area that will give you methadone or pain management instead of addiction. Have you checked?

I hope no one misunderstood me. Methadone is then it at all good as a pain reliever.
It is unfortunately that it is starting to be prescribed more.
Hydromorphone works best for me.
Oxymorphone is also excellent, except it only cam in 1 and 1 1/2 mg injections for years. Before that (60's) they came in 10 mg blue tabs...mistakenly called blue morphine by street addicts.
Now that are back around. Called Opana and come in narcotic tolerant doses.

Just looking at the half life of both drugs....it would make no sense to say that.
If I did....I should not be on this forum giving advise.

I don't know where this person has got their information but it is completely WRONG! And potentially dangerous.Please do not listen to this person! The type of morphine and dosage will affect the conversion. For example - Oral methadone to oral morphine is roughly 2 to 3 times stronger i.e the METHADONE is 2 to 3 times stronger than the MORPHINE. Methadone also has a longer half life, making it easier to overdose. Please do your research when looking for conversion and remember that many factors like route of administration, whether time released, tolerance, frequency of dose etc will all make a difference. There are online conversion charts - please use them. Double check your equations and run them by a friend to make sure! Most of all - don't listen to ignorant comments like this one!!

Yes, I do. I am an RN, have been for 23 years. Served in the US Air Force for 20 of them. Btw, what is alladid? Or did you mean something differently. The half life for hydrocodone is approximately 6-8 hrs depending on your body's metabolic process and morphine has a longer half life of 8-10 hrs again depending on individual metabolism.

Not everyone that stands in that line is abusing drugs and getting methadone for free through medicaid. I stand in that line and I was in two car accidents within a month of each other which messed my back up. I was in excruciating pain every day. My doctor was great at first and after the insurance ran out cut me off of my pain meds. By that time I was addicted. I didn't know what to do, I heard about the methadone clinics and that is what has helped me so much, and I have met lots of people there in that line that are there for the same reason, so don't be so quick to judge those standing in that line, it may be you one day.

Unfortunately, even when replying to a comment, the way these messages are posted, it's not clear who is referring to who. I am replying and warning about TANYA'S comment in the above post, when I say not to listen. She is wrong that morphine is stronger than methadone. It's not about calling people out, this is about safety. I don't want anyone to overdose thinking that they will be ok on a certain amount of methadone because they are used to the equivalent morphine dose. Please refer to the link I have posted and everyone BE SAFE!

j UST WANTED TO SAY , " AMEN" THE WORST PAIN THEY HAVE PROBABLY SOFHERED IS PROBABLY SOMETHING LIKE A LACK OF SLEEP, OR MAYBE A TOOTH AKE, THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY TO COMPREHEND, AND i WOULD NEVER WISH THAT/THIS KIND OF SUFFERING ON ANY ONE, LIKE THEY DO WHEN THEY CAN;T COMPREHEND,BUT INSTED CAUSE YOU EVEN MORE PAIN AND SUFFERING, IT MAKES YOU WANT THEM TO FEEL THE PAIN YOU FEEL/ HAVE, SOME HOW.

WRONG ...I'M ON BOTH OF THESE MEDS & BY FAR METHADONE IS MUCH STRONGER.

METHADOSE (LIQUID CHERRY):
1 PER 10 mgs
50mgs 3x day

MORPHINE: 1 PER 20 mgs
20mgs 3x day
EVERYONE'S METABOLISM DIFFERS THOUGH.

I'm in the same situation. They used to give me codine syrup as a child for asthma. in my younger years i took opiates and self medicated for my depression (since all the antidepressants and antipsychotics didnt work for me) and I've been in 3 car accidents..i am now about to turn 29 .. I've been on the methadone clinic for about 5 years, works great for my pain and depression, but i am living with my parents because no insurance covers it, i am paying 350$ a month.. i work two jobs and am still financially crippled.. it is so wrong. we are treated as crimminals and overpriced by 10X.. i should be paying 30$ a month (thats how much the meds cost.. instead i have to pay for the building, pharmacist, nurse, doctor, 2 drug panels a month, and 2 therapy sessions a month (from some of the WORST therapists in the state), not to mention having to go there once a week.. i just want to get my meds like a normal person and to be treated fairly. if you ask me the drugs that should be super controlled or illegal are alcohol and cigaretts..its always majority rule.. i hate it.. im currently seeking a doctor

Just in case anyone out there is considering taking on methadone....my advice is not to ever start...once started most will never get off...these methadone clinics are legal drug dealers... usually they will always increase ur dose...it will destroy your teeth...most people gain a lot of weight...besides the medical problems they have so much control on ur life..if u needed to leave town u need permission..if u get to the clinic one minute late they don't care ..if u think opiate withdrawal is bad..think again...if anything do a 30 day detox if u r trying to get off of other drugs. I was on alpha medical in Phoenix Az after 15 years I had enough...they don't care about u just ur money. ....I walked away after losing all my teeth and other health issues. Unfortunately most people never get off...I'm so thankful I did.

You are so wrong orally hydrocodone is stronger than morphine. Morphine has a s*** oral bioavailability of 20% to 35% hydrocodones is 80 to 90%and metabolizes into morphine anyway. Morphine. Sucks unless iv worthless. Methadone oral bio is 80 to 90% and 100mg is stronger than 1000mg yes thousand of morphine

I totally agree with everything you have said. I have had 4 surgeries on my spine. I have hardware in my spine both upper and lower,neck, left ankle and my right big toe. And I know that know one knows how extreme my pain is better than me. I am now on 100 mg of morphine tablets. It really pisses me off when a Dr. Tries to make me feel like im lying about my pain as if though he is actually feeling it. Therefore, I immediately inform the Dr. that I willl not be back and I make sure he understand, that he isnt the only pain Dr.
