Which Is Stronger: 30 Mg Of Morphine Sulphate Er Or 10 Methadone
UpdatedI am in a confusing debate with my ex husband: Which is stronger, 30 mg of morphine sulfate E.R or 10 mg of methadone?
Methadone is stronger than Morphine, just as an example, if you were taking the 30mgs of Morphine, the equivalent dosage of Methadone would only be 3mgs, so it's a roughly 1mg to 10mg ratio.

Is there anything else I can help with?
I was on Methadone tablets for 13 years with a NY pain mgmt doctor who worked alongside an Orthopedic surgeon who originally diagnosed my lumbar-sacral pain from DDD (L5/S1) and nerve damage in my legs, plus osteoarthritis in hips and spine. My Methadone dose began at 30mg/day, and at it's highest 10 yrs later, was on 150mg/day. I had gastric bypass surgery in 2009, and lost 130 lbs by 2010. My Methadone dosage was able to be brought down to 90mg/day. I was OK with it.
I moved to PA in 2010, and after a yr traveling back-n-forth to NY every other month to see the pain mgmt doc, I switched to a PA pain mgmt doc. Gave my diagnosis proof and all. After being prescribed 90mg the first visit, the next visit, I'm met with a story that "a new study has shown that 60 mg Methadone" should be the new daily maximum to prevent QT prolongation.
I never had a heart problem. I've had ECG's in the past. I told him my tolerance is too high now for 60mg...He said I'll reduce you by 10 mg a month, and your body will adapt to it. This wasn't sounding right to me. When I got home, I spent hours looking all over medical journals & articles, and seen no such thing stated about Methadone dosages being newly recommended to 60mg max/day. I can't even nicely confront him about it, because if I "put his back against the wall" so to speak, he'll tell me to see someone else then. I already looked into that though my PCP in PA, and he said, doctors in northeast PA have a problem with Methadone. My insurance is only for PA doctors this yr. So I can't see a new doctor back in NY yet, and I haven't felt the pains I've been having in a long long time...I either have to suffer in silence or bear it another 6 months, then change my insurance and try a NY doctor again...He won't speak to my old NY doctor, and my numerous MRI films are from 10 yrs ago, but my DDD is either the same or worse, so how can he have this approach? A couple visits ago, I told him that I was uncomfortable, and he says, "You don't like you're doubled over in pain". I'm saying to myself, 'what a nightmare here'..My pains are least between an hour after waking and around 2pm. Then the pain areas start getting aggravated as the day wears on. I don't know what to say or do.
Is there any thing medication on the maker for Migrains besides trip tans, which I cannot I am AFAID to do the BOTOX,MIDRIN ALWAYS WORKED,I am taking forocet which helps a little.
Frank, I really feel for you my husband is 45 and has had 5 back surgeries, he has been on everything from Oxycontin to Fentanyl lollipops ( which was a very bad). He is now on Methadone 175mg a day and he is pain free. He has bad days and good days but for the most part he is doing well. We live in NJ and all the docs here think your a drug addict when you ask for a medication that works for you such as Methadone. The only way he could get this medication was to join a Methadone Clininc in Newark, NJ, so now once a month he goes and stands in line with all the people that are abusing the system by doing drugs and getting free Meth from Medicaid. It is a real shame that people like you and my husband have to suffer in silence and do what the doctor says. Most of these doctors have not had a day of pain in their lives and they base their recommendation for medication on information they have read in a medical journal instead of listening to their patient. I am sorry this is happening to you and I hope you will be able to get what you need. Hang in there.
Morphine is by far more potent than methadone almost regardless of strength! There are opiates out there that are stronger than morphine however, methadone IS NOT one of them. Hope that helps clear confusion.
I have been on methadone since 1992. I am now on 200 mg Q.D.
I also have to stand in line once a month. But I have to pay $234.00 for my methadone. I am a veteran. I have no insurance. But I have the VA Hospital. The doctors there do not give out more then two weeks of liquid methadone at a time. The clinic I go to once a month gives me 40 mg wafers. I think there is a big difference between Mallincrodt Methadose liquid and Jannson Labs 40 mg methadone wafers. One has time release , one does not. One last 24hours, one lasts about 12 hours.
I was diagnosed with prolongation of the QT interval in 2006. I still m on 200mg Q.D. The doctor at the clinic said that as long as I do not take one f the other drug that prolong the QT interval with my methadone, there will not be any problem.
He gave me the list of drugs that prolong the QT Interval. Ost, ther then Viagra are not at all common. Unfortunately doctors who know alot about methadone, are few and far between. Most doctors do not like methadone, so the do not read about it r prescribe it. Other then giving a patient 20mg B.I.D, or maybe T.I.D. for twenty days. They know nothing past that.
Frank, there must be a methadone clinic in your area that will give you methadone or pain management instead of addiction. Have you checked?
I was just prescribed Morphine 30mg x 2 on Friday. I was on Vicodin 10mg 6 times a day with Percocet for breakthrough pain. My second dose of morphine gave me very bad chest tightness and because the morphine was ER I would get the chest pains every 20-30 minutes. My Doctor said there are other medications to try. I'd like to research some he may prescribe so I'm informed about his next suggestion. If I had a bad reaction to morphine does that rule out taking morphine in any other form? What other medication is comparable to morphine? Many thanks for your help.
I've been receiving the Botox shots for migraines for almost a year. I was having 20+ migraines/mth. I'm down to maybe 1-2/mth now! I'm an avid believer plus if you have crows feet or wrinkles in your forehead, Botox will rid these automatically! Two birds, one stone!!!
I take topamax for migraines works great been on everything as far as doans go im at 80mgs a day plus perc 10/325 for breakthrough pain works well l4/l5 problems for 6yrs mich pain doc started me on everything best was fetanyl patch but they are very expensive without insurance
I hope no one misunderstood me. Methadone is then it at all good as a pain reliever.
It is unfortunately that it is starting to be prescribed more.
Hydromorphone works best for me.
Oxymorphone is also excellent, except it only cam in 1 and 1 1/2 mg injections for years. Before that (60's) they came in 10 mg blue tabs...mistakenly called blue morphine by street addicts.
Now that are back around. Called Opana and come in narcotic tolerant doses.
TANYA....DO NOT EXPLAIN MY POSTS.
I never once said or alluded that morphine was stronger then Methadone
Just looking at the half life of both drugs....it would make no sense to say that.
If I did....I should not be on this forum giving advise.
I have a medical background. (not a CNA) Do you?
Same boat here my friend! They will only write me 30 mgs a day here in Alabama. I've been on MD now for 10+yrs woth no dorty ua's I n 4 yrs. Also have DDD and got the same reaction when I said that I javent had a new MRI in bout 10yrs. Duh, its called Degenerative! ! Ugh! These doctors need to walk a mile in mine! Then tell me that I will just have to bear it!!
I have the same problem and switched to MS morphine (time release) with 0 problems.
thank you verry verry much !
Yes, I do. I am an RN, have been for 23 years. Served in the US Air Force for 20 of them. Btw, what is alladid? Or did you mean something differently. The half life for hydrocodone is approximately 6-8 hrs depending on your body's metabolic process and morphine has a longer half life of 8-10 hrs again depending on individual metabolism.
BTW, I DO NOT RECALL EXPLAINING YOUR POST I WAS SIMPLY STATING MY OPINION, WHICH, THE LAST I RECALL WAS ONE OF MY RIGHTS AS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. Have a nice day, sounds like you need to add a "happy pill" to your concoction of meds!
I can't find a pharmacy that'll fill my long-running scripts for methadone HCL and morphine sulphate IR this month 1/25/14. What to do?
WRONG ...I'M ON BOTH OF THESE MEDS & BY FAR METHADONE IS MUCH STRONGER.
METHADOSE (LIQUID CHERRY):
1 PER 10 mgs
50mgs 3x day
MORPHINE: 1 PER 20 mgs
20mgs 3x day
EVERYONE'S METABOLISM DIFFERS THOUGH.
Find a pharmacy that perscribes medications to hospice facilities
You are wrong about the half-life of both these drugs. Both are MUCH shorter. Look it up on PubMed or other online opiate charts on medical sites
Not so... Where do you get your pharmacy info? If you are going 30 mg of morphine, the equivalent would be 3 mgs of methadone.

I understand the pain you went throu. I have chronic migraines. A couple times the ambulance had to pick me up because my heart started failing due to a killer migraine. The hospital didn't do anything for me. My regular dr. Prescribed rixatripam and doesn't work for me either. I went blind once as you said just for a few seconds but it was awful because I was driving. Sometimes I can have migraines 5/24 is horrible during that period I don't eat at all cuz the nausea or vomit even when I have an empty stomache. I take morphine cuz have back problems. it helps me to keep walking but don't take the pain away. I don't know if morphine is the strongest medicine but can say it doesn't help me. The Dr prescribed me hidromorphone 8mg and oxicodone but it doesn't work. I am finally going to get a surgery.
Re: Lori (# 4)
You are what's wrong with this world ! There are many many patients at methadone clinics because their pain caused an addiction Einstein like your husband. Grow up who are you to judge your husband is no better and I'm sure as far as who's who (a junkie or not) couldn't pick him out in a line up of MMT patients that have gotten their life back thanks to methadone.
Re: Lori (# 4)
Where in jersey because I am trying to find a doctor to help with pain management since I've been in pain management for 15 yrs n my doc died n I'm struggling to find a new doc.
Re: Frank (# 2)
That sucks l would file a complaint. Find another doc and make this old doctors life miserable by filing he needs training in how to deal with issues like you have
Re: Kathleen (# 3)
I have been taking Methadone 10 mg tablets, 2 @ 3 times a day for 14 years. I had migraines that were so bad I'd be driving down the road and I'd go blind for 30-60 seconds but it felt longer, and was so scary. I couldn't have any noise or light in the room and I would have severe nausea or vomiting. Since I've been taking the Methadone 10mg I hardly ever get a bad migraine and if I do I can take a Norco 7.5 and it goes away. I haven't increased my dosage in the 14 years that I've been taking it but I do take Norco 7.5 for my back and if I have a headache. I haven't had anymore problems with my sight since I started taking the Methadone. A lot of Doctors don't like to prescribe Methadone because they give it to people who are trying to get off of opiates. I was allergic to Triptans and Topamax. I hope you find something to help your migraines. I went through 15 years of being put on every drug and Bio-Feedback, so many ER visits that they knew me by name when I came in. Some ER's would call those of us who had severe migraines 4-7 a month "Drug Seekers" and I was so tired of going through that crap.
Re: Bryc (# 73)
Yes, they do ask that kind of stuff at clinics. I'm from uk if I go on hoilday abroad we must have a letter off the clinic with your methadone or subuxone because if you get searched or leave the medication in your hand luggage and the airport staff find your methadone they'll take it away without a letter from the clinic doctor. So yeah that person is right you do need permission to leave the country etc. I'm on subutex 16mg I've been clean 14 years and I'd never touch methadone again it took 3 months of being very sick to get off the stuff. And you Americans are crazy 150mg doses? Wtf? In uk 120mg daily is max and not many get that much it's usually on average 60mg daily anymore and you've to collect your script daily from the pharmacy incase you over dose. My American cousins you're all crazy lol. Some dudes have a attitude problem on here. Don't judge about clinics and being addicts, without clinics most addicts would be in jail or dead. But for pain management I don't agree that methadone should be given it's careless of your doctors to ever give you methadone.
Methadone is for addicts really I don't see why people with pain management would have to go through withdrawals off methadone when they were never an addict, it's unfair to you guys. You should be given morphine etc not methadone. That's my opinion anyway. My uncle had terminal cancer and doctor gave him morphine 10mg 4x day and some long release morphine. I picked up his morphine tablets only like 20 tablets because if I couldn't get my subutex then they'd help me for 2 days.
Re: JUSTME360 (# 30)
I would like to know I was put on morphine sulfate imm 15 mg and morphaibe time reless 30 mg I been itcih like crazy I don't know what to do today was my last one but I still have the morphine relief one because they said I can't take Tylenol because off my liver elevented it but it was not the Norco it was Tylenol I took over the counter because I was having very high temp and it was UTI that I had and that's what was bring my fever had stop taking all my medicine before I start to take Tylenol extra strength and I only took 10 for 4 days my liver counts are going down when I was in the hospital dropping from 2000 to sat that I got it when I left the hospital it was 180 which am sure by know there normal so I wonder if I just can take my Norco because morphine don't help me with my pain and it has been causing a horrible itching

Re: dean (# 97)
No,your imbecile it's 5times the strength of morphine
Re: Tanya (# 14)
I do not believe you are a RN. Methadone is stronger than Morphine. You are getting your half lives wrong. I am sincerely sorry if you are a RN.
