Whether Or Not The Coctail Of Prescriptions I Am Taking Is Safe Or Even Effective
UpdatedI am currently taking the following drugs for misc. health problems:
(PAIN) Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone.
(DEPRESSION) Wellbutrin, Prozac, & Methylin.
(COPD) Albuterol, Singulair, Gemfibrozil, Theophylline, & DuoNeb.
(HBP) Lisinopril.
(ACID REFLUX) Omeprazole.
(S. APNEA) 300 mg Trazodone.
I am becoming very concerned because my health seems to be worsening more rapidly than before. My pain is increasing to the point that I still get some relief but not like I used to. My breathing seems to be worse also. (EXPECTED w/COPD) I am finding myself becoming weaker every day. My depression has decreased very little with the recently added Welbutrin. I am in general not the person I used to be. I am 56 & have left my 4 times in the last three months. I would really like to know if this cocktail of drugs is or is not making my symptoms worse. or is there a possibility that I am toying with what may ultimately turn out to a concoction that is bad or possibly even deadly. I sure hope someone can help me figure this out. I live in a small town that has a serious shortage of good health care providers, making it almost impossible to see a doctor at times when you need to. I appreciate any knowledge I can receive & Thank You for it.

Okay, some immediate things that stand out that I would ask questions about is the use of Methylin for depression, since it contains Methylphenidate, which is a stimulant normally used to treat ADHD and Narcolepsy. It is not normally used as an antidepressant, because such is use is very controversial and it has not been proven effective, nor approve by the FDA for this use.

The next is the the Trazodone for sleep apnea. It is an antidepressant and even the investigational uses don't list it as being tested to be used for this condition.
Since it causes drowsiness as a side effect, it has sometimes been used to treat insomnia, but not apnea.

The next concerns I have involve the two narcotics, Hydrocodone and Hydromorphone and the fact that you have COPD and are having more breathing problems.
These medications can both cause central nervous system depression, which can slow your breathing rate, especially if used at the same time. Using them together, can aggravate this side effect, so it makes it much worse.
Taking the Trazodone, with the Hydrocodone can also cause this.

As to the increasing pain, it is normal, after you have been on medications for a long period of time, for you body to adjust to the current dosage and you will need a higher dose or a different medication.
As to the depression, using the Prozac, with the Methylin, can increase plasma concentrations of the drug, so it may be causing a mild, seratonin syndrome and this can actually feed depression and make it worse. The same can occur with the Prozac and Trazodone being used together.

The Theophylline, used with the Albuterol, which is also in the DuoNeb, can cause conditions such as hypokalemia, which is where the potassium in your body drops and you no longer have as much as what is needed. This can also feed the tiredness, breathing problems and depression.
And the following medications used together can all cause hypotension, so there could be times when your blood pressure is dropping too low, this also feeds the tiredness, pain and breathing problems.
Those are:
Wellbutrin, Lisinopril, Hydromorphone and Trazodone, in this case the Lisinopril is the problem agent, that reacts with the others.

From experience, I can tell you that both of the last two items I mentioned can be very bad and problematic.
That said, yes, I really do think that someone needs to take a very, very close look at your medications and the dosages, as well as how they are affecting your overall health.
