I am looking for Butesin Picrate an anesthetic ointment for minor burns, it was made by Abbot Labs. it contains 1% butamben picrate, inactive ingredients anhydrous lanolin, ceresin wax, methylparaben, mineral oil, mixed triglycerides, potassium chloride, propylparaben, sodium borate. I have used this for years and always gave it as part of a wedding shower gift. It is the best thing for burns there is and I cannot find it. I am almost out.
Here it is months after your request concerning Butamben Picrate. I, too, have rationed out this remarkable burn treatment ointment for over 40 years. My tube says it also contains Metaphen. If your were successful in found this product or even a near duplicate I'd love to hear from you.
I too have been looking for butesin picrate, which the Abbot Labs in Illinois(zip 60054--I still have an old tube, but the print on it is peeled off so much I cannot read the city where it was made) ceased producing years ago. If anyone has found a way to buy this, I too would like to know.
I am just about to run out and really would like to find a substitute. Ice or butter is about where I am now. Any ideas?
I see there are two more of you still looking for the magic burn ointment. I suppose we are just out of luck in our lifetime.
HAVE YOU HAD ANY SUCCESS FINDING THE BUTAMBEN PICRATE? SURE WOULD LIKE TO FIND SOME.
Well, it is nice to see that I'm not the only one who appreciates this product. I guess we are all in waiting...here's to us, wish us luck.
i'm also searching. i just had to use a little bit from my last tube which was supposed to expire 6/1995 -- still works its magic!!!!
I was not surprised that it was back in 2009 that the first request was posted for a source to buy Butesin Picrate and many since have followed. What is it about a perfectly good product that disappeared and never reappeared in the market place? Could it be it was just too darned good? Come on somebody. Give us an answer.
i just contacted Abbott via their online form asking about the product. perhaps others can do the same.

When I called the company around fifteen or more years ago and asked them why they stopped making it the representative was hesitant to answer. So I suggested that possibly it was some sort of legal thing like allergies to it or something. The rep said it was something like that.
I believe metaphen (the disinfectant part) was banned because it contains mercury. This yellow cream was one of my mom's favorite burn remedies, but I personally found it only marginally helpful. Modern Neosporin cream (not ointment) with pain reliever (pramoxine) beats it for me. It numbs the burn in seconds (butesin picrate would take several minutes to act) and keeps it numb as long as it is kept in place with a dressing.
My son is greatly allergic to neosporin. My mother also liked butesin picarate, and I found it to be immediately healing. Could the mercury be removed? Was it harmful in the form it had in the ointment? Or was the ruling overly cautious?
Finaly I found that the Butamben was defined as to be unsafe or not effective by FDA.

I researched butesin pictate. I found that metaphen is considered carcinogenic by the FAD. I also found it to be available in Australia. However it would be very expensive to import it by the case. There are other topical anesthetics available over the counter. Butter, ointments and anything containing a heavy petroleum base will only deal in the heat and make it worse. Cold should be applied first to reduce or remove the heat from burn, then a light gel or cream with a light dressing may be applied if blistering has occured. Severe burns should always be seen by a doctor for proper treatment.
I have no doubt it was effective. I was 5 or 6 when I fell backwards into a brushfire. I supported myself with my hands but could not get off the ash with hot coals under it. I was screaming but my father couldn't hear me because , he was mowing the other side of the yard. My younger brother ran across the yard to get him and my father ran to me. I was in this fire for what seemed like minutes. I was taken to a local small town doctor who spread this cream all over my hands and wrapped them in gauze. A week later he removed the bandages and I had one blister where he had missed it. No scarring. The only bad effect is I can't make calluses and those I do make, peel off.
I WAS BURNED SEVERLY ON BOTH ARMS AND USED THE BUTAMBEN PICRATE. NO SCARING OR SIDE EFFECTS. I HAD TO ORDER REPLACEMENT TUBES FROM AUSTRIALA BUT WAS ABLE TO GET THE SAME THING THERE, THIS WAS ALMOST 20 YEARS AGO
