What Is Stronger Dilaudid Or Oxycontin 40 Mg? (Page 4)

Updated

I have been on Dilaudid for over 2 years now and I can't seem to get off of it. I'm under a doctor's care, but anyone who is on it knows it's very addicting! I think like everybody else, it's no good if you take it orally. It's only effective other ways. I always run out of Dilaudid before my prescription is ready to refill and recently I filled a script for oxycontin 40 mg to see if they could replace my 4 mg Dilaudid. However, I took 1/2 of a 40 mg. and felt nothing. An hour later I took my 4 mg Dilaudid and it seems to have worked. But they are very short lived, that's why for chronic pain they like to give these stupid time release pain pills. How many mg.'s does equal the same amount of Dilaudid? I also would like to know if anyone has ever tapered off of Dilaudid? You get really sick when you try to get off of it, really intense vomiting and stomach pain that lasts forever. I have never stuck it out, I always end up in the emergency room. All they do is give me a pain shot of Dilaudid and a prescription for it as well and send me home. They think there is something wrong with something else. I have even tried to tell them but they either don't want to get involved because I'm under a Dr.'s care or they are just stupid. I hope someone has the best kicking advice, I'd rather be straight or just be one of those once in a while users (RIGHT)!!!

If you are a chronic pain sufferer, then I wouldn't ask which drug is stronger, but which drug works best for your pain. We are all different and different medications work differently for people. If you are suffering from chronic pain then why are you wanting to quit? If you aren't suffering from chronic pain but are addicted to opiates then I know what you are going through because I have been there. The worst thing you can do is trying different opiates on your own, you need to talk to your doctor and let him/her help you in deciding which is best for you. I strongly advise you to not try to just quit on your own because that just won't work, opiates are impossible to quit painlessly without help from your doctor. Take it from someone who has battled with this since 1972, I tried many times and failed..Just be honest with your doctor and ask for help with your chronic pain and or dependence..I hope you will keep in touch here and let us know how you are doing

I absolutely agree with all of the patients who describe their level of pain. I was involved in an automobile accident. too many injuries to list. I am being treated with 2, 80mg Oxycontin daily, I can live life to the fullest. It is my prayer that all of the patients who have pain can find anything to help them rejoin the human race as chronic takes away all of lifes daily living. Thanks for this forum, it reassures me that I can live nicely with proper meds, good physicians and prayer.
Thanks again,
Chad Reid

Has anyone had experience with Nucynta ER. It was just released this past August and my PM doctor switched me from Oxycotin 15mg for this med at 100mg twice per day. I tried it for approx 1 week and unfortuantely I didn't have any pain relief from it. After which my doc switched me back to Oxy 30mg due to my increassed pain and OxyIR 10mg. I'm debating whether to go back to Nucynta but with a stronger dosage to determine if this med will work for me. Has anyone had experience with this medication before? Any responses would be appreciated.

Pat, I have been taking numerous pain meds including Avenza (morphine), Fentynyl, and am now on Oxycontin. I have take hydrocodone 10/325 for many years. I have safely weaned myself off of everyone of these drugs. For example, right now my Dr. has me on 4 x a day 40 mg. Oxys. I have SLOWLY gotten myself down to 2 40 mg a day. I did this on my own BUT let my Dr. know during the last appt. It is possible for some people to take care of tapering down, even if you can't handle it on your own.

My pain management Dr. has told me many times they have a drug indused way of getting you through withdrawls. She is a anesteasiologist,so I would do some more research. She also mentioned a 2 day detox.Very safe..AGAIN ask a DR.

yes 40mg is the only oxycontin that is available in generic. Still expensive though.

All I am giving is my experience. and I couldn't do it on my own..If you have read every single post I have I think you will see that I don't ever give medical advice telling people they can do it, it is just to dangerous to be playing doctor..The one absolute I tell everyone is to do NOTHING until they talk to their doctor..People that are older with other medical conditions like myself have died from severe opiate WD's...So while I am very happy for you that you can do it on your own, I will never give that kind of advice to anyone, I think the safest way to go about it is to give your experiences and then make sure you tell them to talk to their doctor be4 trying to taper off of any drug....I am 56 years old so I know what I am talking about....I wish you well

No human being needs to be on multipile pain med that are so strong doctors unless u have had a surgery in the hospital, the reason all of u need stronger meds is because u have built a tolerance to everything else. The day any of u have to get off that medication is going to be the day you wish u never took it and for the person who said they shoot their oxys is freaking nuts I garentee the bottle of medication does not say shoot up. I sugesst all of you take a good look in the mirror and re evaluate the whole situation. And I do know that some of u are in alot of pain but u are on way to much medication in reality!!! an don't argue the fact about back surgery and degenritive disk problems my dad has all of that an he only takes up to two 5mg percocettes a day! All of that medication is so addictive and no good at all!!! Just because a doctor prescribes it to you doesnt mean that you dont have a problem!!

I was just switched from 15 mg oxycodone 5 per day to 8 mg dilaudid 4 times per day. I am doing much better with the new med. so far so good but I have to agree with everyone. Its all addictive and sooner or later we will have to pay the piper for the addiction.

Amen! There is a difference between addicted and dependant and when you have long term or permanant chronic pain you either become dependant and have a life or you suffer and have no quality of life.

Wow, I was beginning to think I was the only one who took 30s & about every thing people have mentioned that could care less to do anything all. It turned me into not only the biggest procrastinator but also one of the most reclusive man in the world. After only a year I had not one passion in my life. I have chosen to at least feel something instead of going through life numb. The other guy was right on point when he explained his friend and the personality changes.

Peace... Hope this helps at least one person to think twice.

NeverMind,
Your post is very intelligently written and has inspired me to take a much more thorough approach to treating my chronic pain. It is impossible to generalize chronic pain conditions enough to consider a consistent regimen that works 100% of the time! In my case, there are simply too many contributing factors. It is so important for the patient to collect more personalized data that no doctor could ever compile, you can more successfully coordinate with your physician to come up with a solution custom designed for YOU. No doctor can tell you how to treat YOUR pain without YOUR OWN detailed assessment and established facts. Thank you NeverMind.

I am fighting an addiction problem to Roxy's. I have had enough and went to an out patient clinic and was on a Suboxone regimen. It took care of the physical withdrawal symptoms. After two weeks all is well. Good luck to you.

I have been taking 6x8mg dilaudid for a long time problem is I need increases as tolerance develps. Doc put me on long acting, Crappy stuff that gives you the constipation and doesnt work as well. Now put me on the new oxy with the napolxaline in it. More crap. I dont know why anyone would want to stop taking them if you have severe chronic pain. I guess what I say is oxy's are a joke compared to the 8mg. dilaudid for pain relief. For other uses, I cant say, but you people who keep abusing the meds are making it worse and worse for us chronics with pain. Knock it off will you and grow up.

I too wear the 100mcg. Duragesic Patch. I have suffered with chronic pain since 1994 and have never had any real relief until the Fentanyl. I also get 120 10mg. hydrocodone, but rarely need them. Fentanyl is AWESOME!!
