What Is A Good Replacement For Dexedrine Er? (Top voted first)

Updated

I have an appointment with my psychiatrist this week and I plan to tell him about Amneal's discontinuation of Generic Dexedrine ER. That was the only authorized generic I could find, and the only version which worked for me.

Now that I can't get it, should I request an IR version, or is there something more appropriate? I realize my doctor is the best person to ask, but I'd like to know what to ask for heading into the appointment. Thanks in advance!

Amneal also makes brand Dexedrine Spansules. Tell your doctor that generic doesn't work for you/causes "side" effects, and have him/her (or the employees in their practice who deal with billing health insurance) inform your insurance company of this so that they will cover the Amneal Dexedrine Spansules. Otherwise you're looking at about $800 a month for 30 Dexedrine Spansules or having to make do with the crappy Dextroamphetamine ER generic.

The generic for Dextroamphetamine that my pharmacy uses changed its NDC number a couple of months ago, which means its formula changed. It was even worse than the sub-par previous formula, the capsules were unusually shiny, and the contents of the capsule reeked of propylene glycol. That month those meds went down the garbage disposal as I'd rather be non-functional than ill/poisoned.

Welcome to the US in 2022. I miss the way things were during my 1980s childhood. Corruption always goes hand-in-hand with the consolidation of power, but I believe the situation has gotten far worse since then in general, but especially in regard to all things medical/pharmaceutical/"health care" (ie illness industry).

False. All generics are approved, only a handful are authorized.

Is an Authorized Generic Drug the Same Thing as a Generic Drug?

No. The term “authorized generic” drug is most commonly used to describe an approved brand name drug that is marketed without the brand name on its label. Other than the fact that it does not have the brand name on its label, it is the exact same drug product as the branded product. An authorized generic may be marketed by the brand name drug company, or another company with the brand company’s permission. In some cases, even though it is the same as the brand name product, a company may choose to sell the authorized generic at a lower cost than the brand name drug.

Have you tried Vyvanse? It's a great medication to treat ADHD. There's also Mydayis that's supposedly a great medication, as well.

I agree vyvanse is a good extended release adhd medication but dexidrine is a lot stronger and vyvanse will not be equivalent to that. My suggestion would be to either ask for the brand name on medications such as this. My experience has been that the generics are horrible anymore. Especially when the pharmacies switch up on you and you get a brand you weren’t expecting and you pretty much wasted your script. I take zenzedi (brand name only) let me tell you! I switched from generic adderall to these and it was night and day!! Dexidrine is probably one of the strongest amphetamines out there for adhd so just keep that in mind when trying to replace it.

All generic medications that are dispensed by your pharmacy are authorized generics, if they were not approved by the FDA, they would not be available.

Dexedrine is most commonly used to treat ADHD, and narcolepsy.

The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming, and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, mood changes, irritability, insomnia, and anorexia.

As others have already mentioned, there are several other options available, but it can depend on what your specific condition is, other medications you may be taking, and etc.

Has your doctor made any suggestions, yet?

I would say Desoxin is the strongest but difficult to obtain.
