What Antibiotics Work Best For A Tooth Infection
UpdatedI have the following antibiotics that I can take to help me until I can get to my dental appointment, but my dental appointment isn't until February 10th. I always keep my appointments because it's hard to get in with them, they stay booked for the time frame I can get there. I have an infection in the front of my gum area, front tooth stays sore a lot. It comes and goes all the time. I can taste it too. Which one would help me best until my appointment? Macrobid, Levofloxacin, or Bactrim?

Hi Kym,
I see you posted this on January 30th...and it's now March 2nd (after your appointment date). Were you ever able to determine which antibiotic to take for the tooth infection?
I've been prescribed Penicillin/Amoxicillin for this in the recent past and that seemed to keep me at bay until I had the tooth extracted. Although my research "leads me to believe" that Penicillin-based antibiotics are best suited for these types of infections, I think your dentist is probably the best person to ask for advice on what to take, solely because they can confirm the presence and severity of the infection before making a recommendation.
If I were in this position and couldn't get hold of my dentist, I'd probably try contacting another one (or a pharmacist) just for their opinion on the matter.
One thing I do want to mention though is that Macrobid is purportedly not that effective against tooth infections; so I'd single that one out of the picture from the get go and choose between Levofloxacin and Bactrim. My only reason for not liking Bactrim is because it's very powerful and as a result comes with a high risk of side effects (at least based on my experience and reading other comments here). There have also been reported cases of Levofloxacin being prescribed for tooth infections (whether or not it's the best option is debatable, but if it's all you have to use, then I'd say why not, as long as you have a full course of treatment). Just wanted to share my thoughts... I hope everything turned out for the best!
