What To Take For Break Through Pain
UpdatedI have been on Oxycontin ER 80mg twice a day for almost 7 years and it has been moderately to sometimes completely effective in eliminating my chronic abdominal pain. However, there are times (1-2 times a week, or so) when I can't get the pain under control. Currently, I cut one of the pills in half, which I know I shouldn't do, but it does what I want it to. Considering the strength of the Oxy that I'm on, what would be a better alternative to what I've been doing? I was considering asking my DR for an Rx of OxycoDONE (same thing but faster acting) for the break through pain an, if I do, what strength should I ask for? Or, if that's not a good idea, then what else would you suggest? Any help would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!

Discuss your problem w/ your Dr, unless they want your opinion what to prescribe. If they do prescribe a breakthrough medication, they will ask how its helping next visit. Some physicians don't like to be told what to prescribe or the dosage. They have the DEA breathing down their necks due to the Dr.s that were/are prescribing to addicts for high fees.
Give him a chance for a suggestion and trial to see if it helps.
God forbid I should suggest/tell a Dr. what to give me, huh? No, seriously, I understand where you're coming from and unlike those that you mentioned (addicts) I don't have a clue what it's like to "get high" on the stuff. All I "feel" is pure, unadulterated pain RELIEF, and a lot of Dr's (not my PCP, but the pain management jerks I've seen in the past) simply don't believe that's possible. Thanks for the honest and smart advice and I'll keep you posted.
If you've been seeing this doctor for awhile and they already know that the Oxycodone has been helping, there likely won't be much harm in your broaching the subject.
The main problem arises when someone first sees a doctor and asks for such medications as a new patient, because then it is seen as drug seeking behavior.
Just don't demand it, you can make the suggestion or ask if there is another type of Oxycodone you can add, but leave it open for them to make the decision or recommend you try something else.

Can you post back and let us know what happens?
