Hi Bev,
With any "drying" product you will definitely want to lightly exfoliate 2-3 times a week. I recommend dry brushing, as it removes dead skin more efficiently. You can also use a toner to help remove any left over dirt/dead skin/ excess oils, but just make sure that the toner is alcohol and fragrance free so that it does not cause any more irritation.
Based on my research and personal experience, coconut oil is a great moisturizer because it can actually penetrate deeply into the skin. I have used Retin-A and I benefited greatly from making my own facial masks out of raw honey, olive oil, coconut oil, and banana. There are many sites that offer home made recipes for dry skin.
