What Is The Best Generic Version Of Wellbutrin Xl - Watson Or Anchen? (Page 66) (Top voted first)

Updated

My doctor will not prescribe generic Wellbutrin XL but my insurance will no longer pay for brand name drugs. I will have to pay about $7000 per yer for what I am taking now (3 of the 150mg Wellbutrin XL brand name per day). I am reading that the problem with the generics is the time release mechanism and not the drug itself and that some are better than others. Anybody have experience with the generics made by Watson and /or Anchen?

Crosbysmom – would you mind sharing what it ends up costing per month with the discount card from Valeant, and if you can tell if there is a max amount of savings per year (very common with these discount cards)?

Hope I thought you had this info nailed down in your post #1351. That is a question I too was going to ask Crosbysmom. Your info is the reason I was considering moving on to investigating generic SR formulations, also keeping in mind that the "program" can end at anytime, but is supposed to be valid through 12/2017-WHICH is fast approaching.

Thanks for sharing, Crosbysmom – so to sum it up, if your insurance provides any coverage toward brand name, you will pay $5/30 pills. If your insurance provides no coverage at all for brand, you will pay $100/30 pills. Evidently, Valeant then hits the insurance company with that difference (?) This is a great program for someone whose insurance provides even minimal coverage…otherwise, it is exactly like the most recent Direct Success program of $100/30 pills.
It’s a shame that it is not widely recognized or understood how these meds that mess with brain chemistry can be affected by time release mechanism, fillers, etc., and how it affects each person so differently, and what the dollar cost is to those that deal with depression. Even $100/month is a struggle, and the cost just keeps going up.

Hope, I'm not sure about the cost difference with the card. i believe they explained it to me several months ago, but I forgot already.

I totally understand about paying $100 a month. It's just not even an option for me right now. I have two kids in college. I did pay $50 for a few months last year, but then I tried generic Actavis for the second time to save money.

lluvco-you were the one who asked if I tapered. I was wondering, if anything, what you decided w/regard to stopping the generic SR? I've no idea if you're male or female.....but I'm 46 yr old female & not long after I began the adderall (trying to completely replace Wellbutrin XL), it really messed up my cycle & I had an agonizing ovarian cyst rupture. I since did research on adderall'a effects w/regard to females' cycles. (I really wasn't wanting to throw another wrench into all this, but I must tell you). I went on it w/the encouragement of my psychiatrist , & thought it to be my miracle-initially. I sure don't mean to sound like I know it all ....cuz I DON'T that's why I keep reading & posting. But my trial w/it (@ only 5mg) threw me off track. How long have you done the adderall & at what dose ? Do you think possibly it's the adderall working & not the bupropion at all at this juncture? I did the adderall for 7 weeks.

Oh I see lluvco adds 10mg of adderall. For how long ?

lluvco-thx for the post. So.......do you think that's what's maybe working more so than the SR cuz u said u forget to take the 2nd bupropion sometimes. ?
I guess if it's not broken-don't fix. I'm just kinda curious if it's the adderall that's doing it for you since that's the whole reason I attempted it. I read a lot about people finding adderall to be a great find for those with treatment resistant depression. Would you even consider trying the adderall alone?
BTW-I had absolutely zero "withdrawal" effects when I just stopped the Wellbutrin xl & began the adderall.

Susie, what was the pharmacy service you used to order from Canada?

Re: Kaila (# 1408) Expand Referenced Message

It was onlinepharmaciescanada. It was Valeant Canada drug though & many people complaint that it does not work as well as the Valeant USA brand. Haven't received mine yet, but in the mean time my Dr gave me Topamax that should help with weight loss since that is the only problem I am having. Good luck.

I just checked in to see if there's been anything new reported & to offer an update. I decided to stop taking Wellbutrin XL & any generic bupropion on 7/29/17 so I'm a few days short of 8 weeks. I want to report that I don't feel any worse nor did I experience any significant effects of w/d. That leads ME to believe that neither the Brand from Valeant made in Canada nor any generic I tried were doing anything good for me. My 2 cents.

I'm using Anchen. White round with A102 on it. 300 mg. My first generic was horrible. Can't remember company but it was an oval with 241? Not sure of the number. on it. White.

Want to throw this out there. Considering asking my doctor about switching to Wellbutrin SR instead of XL because of the weight gain. Can anyone tell me if they had any success on the SR in comparison to the XL. The SR Brand is $400 which is way more cheaper than the $1400 XL brand so I figure it might help with my weight loss. I hope someone has some good news for me in terms on how great the SR helped their depression also.

Re: Susie (# 1415) Expand Referenced Message

I wonder why you gained weight on the XL. I’ve lost 71lbs on it combined with watching what I eat.
I have been curious how well the SR actually works.

Re: KM (# 1417) Expand Referenced Message

That's the million dollar question KM...but as you can see on this thread it is the main concern for most of us on the generic brand. Even though some has lost weight, I wasn't so lucky. My doctor switched me from Celexa with the promise that I would lose the weigh I gained but I gained 15lbs in my first wk.

Re: Susie (# 1418) Expand Referenced Message

I was on celebs too! It was terrible! Caused me to gain more weight than I’ve ever weighed and they were saying I either had fibromyalgia or early onset rheumatoid arthritis. I hope you figure something out soon! It’s so frustrating!
