What Else Will Work If Oxycodone 30 Does Not
(Newest replies first)

Hi I have been taking oxycodone 30 mg, 2-3 pills every 4 hours. When I started 4 years ago, I was taking 5mg. I know that the longer you are on the meds, the more "used to" the pill your body gets and the more it needs for the same relief. The thing is, that even taking 90mg at a time, it really isn't working much and I am getting afraid that nothing is going to get rid of this pain. I have cancer and take the medication for the severe bone pain that I get as well as the pain from side effects from the chemo. Is there anything out there that anyone knows of. I keep asking my dr, and they just increase the oxy...It is so hard to get it to begin with...These pharmacies just treat you like crap, like I am some drug dealer on the street!!!! Or worse yet a drug addict that needs a quick fix...I don't want to take this medication, I HAVE TO!!!!!!! Until I take my medication in the morning when I wake up, I cannot even get up out of bed.. That's how bad my bones hurt..Please help me!!!!!

Thank you so much but unfortunately am still suffering I do appreciate all the advice and kind words. I will be bringing them up with my new pain dr. Anytime you hear of anything that can help or new out there please keep me in mind I hope and wish the best for all of you as well.
Oh, I am so sorry you cannot control your pain! Please, Please, know that, with bone cancer, pain is there! IT'S REAL! Don't you DARE feel ostrized by your pharmacist!I'I'm sure you've talked to your Drs re THE MEDICATION JUST ISN'T WORKING!!! I had a friend who had breast cancer, metastisized to her bones, and she was on morphine...it helped her pain, but, of course, lowered her mental status...DO NOT SUFFER FROM PAIN! You have enough on your plate! Pls, Pls, talk to your Drs re morphine...I, too, have chronic pain from a disease called Fibromuscular Dysplasia and mulltple anuerysmsss, two of them removed, the rest (in renal arteries and brain) are small, and they are watching them closely...I have headaches (migraine), but...also fear that "oh, oh, this is the biggie...the small aneurysm in brain has suddenly grown and burst"...I'm on a much lighter pain medication (fiorional w/cod and Norcal 10)...they don't take the pain AWAY, but I can function with it...YOU, however, have a much "harder" diagnosis to live with....FIGHT for what you need...be proactive and TALK TO YOUR DRS!!! Please key and let me (us) know that your "problem" has been solved? God Bless, and a HAPPY, PAIN FREE NEW YEAR TO YOU!!! (( had a friend who live 17 years with bone cancer that had metastisized from her breast cancer)...they are doing so much with cancer these days...honest...I've had 3 friends recently diagnosed....yup...course, I'm almost 70, BUT STILL...
Katie, Q again. I just got back from our local cancer Center where I saw my oncologist and picked up this months scripts. She always asks me how the current meds are working . . . I told her everything was just fine and that was that. I've been Rxed Oxycodone #240 30 mg and Fentora #150 600 mcg p/m for two years now and haven't seemed to have changed my tolerance at all. Of course I'm physically dependent on them now but that's a whole lot different than being addicted to them. I have no cravings and there's no problem with running out " early". I sure hope that your onc is open to Rxing your pain meds . . . you should tell him about your pain Dr. Also, for Dianne the OP, Duragesic is fentanyl. When I was on it it was with #180 Oxy 30's for BTP as well. I switched to the Fentora as I didn't like the long acting aspect of the patch. I hope you all are as well as can be hoped for, my report today was good . . . Q
Katie, I couldn't agree with you more! I have stage IV mCRPC, advanced prostate cancer with a 1 year prognosis, and I get the same treatment at pharmacies though I get all of my opiates Rxed by my Cancer center. They are wonderful and have been that. way for seven years now. Can your oncologist Rx you your pain meds? I'd like to write more but I'm off to the center, hope to hear more from you . . . Q
Diana I understand the problem you have cause I have lung cancer, and this year breast cancer and the pharmacy treats me as if I am a drug dealer when all I want is to be out of the pain that cancer has left my body in they lie to me and make me wait til I feel like the paun is taking control of my whole body.I was goung to a pain center and they got mad at me cause I was taking my meds then yesterday I learned the pain center I was going to the nurses there are selling pills but they get no punishment at all andxthey have ppl cime there and get the dr to wrire for their friends as ling as they get a piece of the pie and I do not know how ti tell rhe dr that got mad at me for trying to stay out of pain that their nurses are sending ppl to him then having the ines they kniw to sell pills for them .I di not think it is right for them to do that when the ines they send there is norhing wrong with them and they get anything.I wish dr could feel what cancer pain feels like.
Oxy morphine works well 30 mg in combination with the blue 30 mg oxycodone. You simply get use to drug and you brain no longer releases the chemicals that basically numb your brain . I was on 180 / 30 oxy every two weeks with 60 / 80 oc And eventually my pain was back after time . Try leaning off to sub films and start smoking natural MMJ prop 215
The indica dom strains will help you sleep as we'll with pain .
Once your off all those chemicals n you are on just sub 8mg with natural plant you will feel a world of diff . There are many different THCa % in each
Get 22% to start then you can move on up till your comfortable . There are consecrates that are in the 90% on up tch / thca - will work and you won't have to be a slave to nothing but a natural wonder soon after time goes
Duragesic is the same thing as the Fentanyl Transdermal (FTD) patch. I also have cancer, CRPC , and the therapy as well as the cancer itself give me acute and chronic musco-skeletal pain. I was on FTD for 4.5 yrs along with 180 to 240 p/m Oxycodone 30mg tablets. That worked for a while but then gave out. 2yrs ago Iswitched to Fentora 600 micrograms, 5 a day, with #240 oxy ir 30s, Fentora is twice the strength of Aqtiq and its release rate is almost immediate. I'd say 10-15 minutes. this takes care of the acute pain and the oxycodone 30s handle the chronic pain.
Have you tried the new SSNRI A / Ds like Cymbalta? They have a norepinephrine inhibitor that works on MY pain, I'm no Dr. but I have beat my prog
by over 3 yrs. since. you have cancer it should be relatively reast to get Fentora as it is Rxed for cancer only. You.d better have good ins though as my Rx of #150 is about $11,000.
No I had first tried Vicodin, Percocet and I have tried patches..not sure if they were Fentanyl..I have tried Duragesic(not sure if the same) without much success but I am not sure what mg they were and if they went up as high as they could and it was not combined with any pills or anything...I mean right now even though it is very little, there is some relief...I just don't know what will happen when this strength does not work any more...I mean it is a lot(of mg) to take...What is the maximum that you can take??? does anyone know?? Is there any other medications(pills) out there stronger that anyone knows of?? I am just so afraid of not having anything....I'm sure you can understand that....Thank you for all your replies and words of kindness everyone!!
Wow! All I can say after reading your story is my heart truly goes out to you, as I suffer daily from Chronic Back Pain, after an accident & undergoing (6) back surgeries, although I did end up w/ RELIEF of the horrible {Sciatic Nerve Pain} down both legs, I still suffered the chronic low back pain. The dosage you are taking is actually fairly high in mg. several times daily, so for that to not relieve your pain level, makes my heart ache for you. You'll be in my prayers! Bless you!
You might want to ask about trying the Fentanyl patch, or lollipop. It's a very potent narcotic pain reliever, so it may help you more and it's quite often prescribed for cancer patients with the type of pain you have.
Learn more Fentanyl details here.
The lollipop is available under the name brand Actiq, the name brand for the patches is Duragesic, but there are also generics available of the patches. They are both time released, so you get better pain control for a long period of time.
I really hope you find something that works, I am sorry that you are suffering.
Many doctors seem to think that Oxycodone is the go-to medication for everyone for pain relief, but it doesn't work for everyone that tries and, like you, there are some that it just seems to stop working for and no longer helps.
Is it the only narcotic you've tried?
