Hi Chase,
What you're describing when you mention gaining weight but losing inches, is in my experience with strength training, a result of increasing muscle mass and losing fat simultaneously (for muscle weighs more than fat). I can't say for sure that this is what's happening with you, but I really don't think it's anything to be alarmed of.
If I were in this position, I'd probably give the medication a little more time to see how it affects me before deciding whether the benefits outweigh the risks, etc... But also be sure to question your doctor if you continue to notice anything outside the norm.
