Wearing Off To Quickly?
UpdatedHello. I suffer from several back/neck issues and I was prescribed 50 mcg fentanyl patches i have been wearing the patch for alittle over 24 hours and it seems like it is already wearing off...Is this possible? And if it is, what would be causing this?! I am starting to feel pain again and i don't want to just stick another patch on because I have heard they are very dangerous. Before these patches I was prescribed 15 mg oxycodone without acetaminophen but grew too much of a tolerance to them, plus they didn't really help the pain in the first place. After the doctor prescribed me the Fentanyl I filled the prescription and put one on...It wasen't until 12 hours after that I felt some relief and like i said before it is already wearing off it seems like and I have only had the patch on for a day and a half MAX. Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

The guidelines for Fentanyl patches claim that it works to relieve pain for "up to" 3 days (72 hours). And with an average elimination half-life of approximately 20-27 hours, it makes sense why it doesn't seem to last as long as you'd prefer it to. Half of the dose is pretty much out of your system after a day goes by...
Have you considered trying tablets over patches? I guess both have their pros and cons, but I've recently read some patient reviews stating that tablets are generally more potent. This may be something to talk to your doctor about if the patches aren't as efficient as they make out to be.
I hope this perspective helps! Does anyone else have personal experience with the patches and/or tablets?
Thanks so much for the reply. And no I didn't even know that there were tablets. I have a doctor appt. coming up. I am going to inquire about the tablets, I really don't like the hassle of the patch anyway. I'm always having to worry about it when I take a show and go to sleep.
i am on the 25mcg for pain, and its the same problem for me. After about 18-24hours the effective wears off so that by the next day no pain relief at all. I have CP, and many back issues to top it off. The pharmacist says I probably need a stronger dose, but my pain doc doesnt understand the severity of pancreatitis, and so I am pretty much stuck with no effective pain relief, except for hours on day one, that is the only time I get to choose if I will get some rest or be able to do some activity, so for most of my month its misery. How should I approach this issue. I am still fairly new, and have never been to pm before this. If I find another pain doctor, is that considered doctor shopping
