Weaning From Risperidone

I am on Sizodon for over 2 years now. Was previously on haloperidol for 15 years. Prior to the treatment I wasn't a very active person mentally. I went into psychosis while I was a teen. I am 38 now. With the help of the medication I am able to function well. But would like to know if the long-term side effects will affect me later in life. I want to wean from the medicine but I am scared whether I will be able to function well. Please advise.

Think of how you feel now and how your doing before you change anything. It is far better to think logically, function daily than be off of medicine and be in a completely different mind state.

Thanks for the reply Careon. I had undergone therapy for a long time, to get my mind clear of all that troubled me, and the doc was of the opinion that I may be able to stop the medication. But I tried it several times to get off it, but wasn't comfortable. I am also on an antidepressant to lift my mood. I remember that I used to be a passive person, studying all the time, and used to do well in studies. What was lacking was playing and interacting with friends which I didn't do much. This made me socially handicapped. This showed up when I was in my teenage where you are expected to be having more fun than do your studies. I couldn't mingle with others and the friends deserted me 'cos I was a nerd. My communication skills were very bad. So it made communication with the oppsite sex difficult. Misunderstandings creeped in and had to suffer a lot of complicated situations. Somehow completed my studies. Tried to work, but emotional issues haunted me wherever I went. I am better off with the medicines, especially on the communication part. Previously I used to suffer because I cant say what I want to say. My concern was if therapy can cure completely or do I still need the medication to correct the imbalance. Thank you.

Sreeja, therapy may or may not provide a complete cure, for some people it does and for some it doesn't. Many people do require daily use of these types of medications for most of their lives.

If your doctor things you can successfully leave the medication behind, then it is certainly worth trying, however, when you did try, how was it done? Did you try to gradually taper off the medication or did you just try to stop taking it all at once?

Risperidone is a very potent antipsychotic that is used to treat various mental health disorders and a sudden withdrawal of it can cause some withdrawal effects, as well as rebound effects, because your body is used to having it and then suddenly has to try to readjust and regulate itself, without the aid of the medication.

To avoid this, the medication must be slowly tapered, over time, until you eventually get to the point where you can stop taking it.

I am on 1mg of sizodon. Tried to cut down it to 0.5mg. I was ok for a few days, or 1 or 2 days but would feel heavy headed after that, as if I was not able to think easily. Then I had to go back to 1mg again. I stopped trying since the variation was affecting my mood.

If you r suffering from paranoid psychosis u have to take risperidone or sizodon for the rest of your life.but iam sorry to say that haloperidol is the worst antipsychotic and using it for 15 yrs have done irreparable damage to many vital functions of your body.unfortunately u may not survive till your average life span and have a hampered and reduced quality of life till u live!
