Hi Rhonda,
I have been on warfarin for two years now after a stroke and have found exercise is fine, but if you want to spend a lot of time in the sun I would suggest a hat of some kind as people on warfarin seem to be more prone to headaches and sunstroke. I haven't seen any trials about this but have spoken with others on warfarin and we all seem who have similar problems.
I don't burn easily. In order for me to burn, in the past would take a full day of sunbathing. I've been on warfarin for about 5 months or so and find that after 30 minutes, my skin is red, like as if I was sitting out all day!!! It's crazy but I also read some literature from my compression stockings company that excessive sunbathing or heat is not good for the blood because it expands blood vessels and can cause pooling of blood which can lead to blood clots ( which is what I have DVT and PE- clots in leg that broke off and went into my lung) so in general now I don't stay out in hot temps or take hot showers. Hope this helps!!
Warafarin thins the blood, therefore it takes less time for it to be affected by external heat sources, and the most commonly affected organs are the Brain, Eyes and Skin. The long and the short of it is if your INR is above 2 then you need to be very careful, and wear very dark sunglasses, Hats, and sunblock. My INR is kept at 3.2 - 3.5 which means more than two minutes in full sun can cause major problems.
I have been on coumadin/warfarin for over a decade now and seams every time i get a bit too much sun the burn is worse. Last event was 30-45 minutes at 2 pm and I wound up purple.. My doctor said it was like a chemical burn. So floppy hats and long sleeves from now on.. :'(
