I need to know how to stop taking contrave. Can I just quit cold turkey or do I wean off? If I wean off how do I do it?

I've been taking contrave for a while now. I lost 35 pounds in about 6 months. I'm experiencing the same thing you are. My appetite has come back and my old habits are creeping back in. I have kept my weight off and I feel like I'm stabilized within about 3-4 pounds. I'm scared the weight will pile back on. I'm still taking contrave. Any suggestions?

Do need to be weaned off of Contrave
My doctor passed away and the doctor that took his place does not fill prescriptions for weight loss

I checked with my doctor about weaning off for a while, and he said to just titrate down just like I titrated up when i started taking it. He also said I can go back on it if I need to and do just start like before a titrate up.

I have been taking Contrave for a month. I have just started to get terrible, almost unbearable stomach cramps. Has anyone else experienced this? If it's from the Contrave, I'll have to stop it because I can't live like this.

Try taking a prebiotic every day. This cleared my constipation.

Hi Annie, I have had the same results as you. I am going to stop taking it and see if the 35 pounds stays off if I keep the same regiment of exercise and eating right. I have been seeing some memory issues ever since I have been on it.
I plan to titrate down same as I titrated up, but will check with my doc on Monday.

I have been on Contrave for 11 months. Only side effect was dry mouth for the first couple months. I have lost a little over 75 lbs. i eat better, sleep better, and ferl better. There is mo magic pill, you must change you eating habits and make wiser choices.
I have hit a coulke of plateaus but you just wirk thru them. If you go off track for a day, dont swear it get back on the next day.

I've been on Contrave since end of January & I lost 25lbs in 1month. That was the weight I gained from letting myself go. The nxt 20lbs was a lot me; paying attention to what & how much I ate. Weaning off now & in reverse am starting 1 twice /day. I'm worried& hoping I'll be able to keep up the healthy eating & portion control...Yes. I've vomited 12x's since January, but if you can put up w/the side effects & they're not too severe, I believe it's worth it. Good luck...wish me luck!

I've been taking Contrave for four months. have started cutting down - am down to two a day. I have a three hour surgery on June 21st and felt like it'd be best to be off. In 5 more days going down to one for 5 days. I'd be completely off of it for four days before surgery. Don't know how long it will be in my system. I will have general anesthesia and I'm 66-yrs-old. any help would be appreciated. I've lost 13 lbs. I really don't want to loose anymore - I'm 5' and 118 lbs first thing in the morning.

Yes. After being on contrave for several months I lost 20lbs. Now even with the contrave I am eating the same as alwsys but have gained 10 lbs back. My appetite is horrendous so it seems it is not working anymore. Talking to my doctor next visit. Anyone know if taking 6 a day will be harmful

About coming off the Contrave I just called the pharmacy and they said there are no weaning off things you just stop it if you don't like it there's no side effects

This the exact same experience I have had. I am satisfied with my weight loss. The drug seems to loose its effectiveness after prolonged use. I was able to change the way I eat (more veggies) and exercise more(long walks 2x day). I will continue the wellbutrin due to add. Do not eat fast food, and realize food like chips and other snacks have food additives that make you crave more( 60 minutes episode). Don't panic or give up. Try to eliminate as much salt as possible; by adding salt after cooking and try to get sweets naturally, no refined sugar. If you have hunger pains, go for a walk or do yard walk, it will pass. I follow my diet all week and indulge on Saturday. I find if i eat junk food, I feel worse and my hunger goes out of control. stick to real food. just think; if I can loose 2 lbs. a week, that a potential of 104 lbs in one year. Go low and slow(weight loss) and keep it up. If you lose too fast you gain it right back.

I started taking Contrave in December 2015 and on the fourth week I tried the 4 pills a day and immediately had dizziness and feeling bad so I stopped. After a short break I decided to give it another try (which was dumb, I should not have done) because I'm morbidly obese and I so desperately want to loose weight. The second time around I stopped increasing at the 3 pills a day (1 in the morning, 2 in the evening) and around that time I saw my doc again and he said that was fine. I did the 3 pills for a few weeks then one weekend since I didn't have to go anywhere I tried the fourth pill again. I didn't seem to have the head issues so I continued. After a week or 2 maybe I started having bad depressing persistent thoughts about death, I also noticed I would beak out in bad sweats after taking my does and that I didn't seem to be full emptying my bladder when urinating because I would stand at the toilet for a bit after I was done and then more would come out.
As of this morning I'm stopping this medication for good. I'm not taking another pill and I hope to god these depressing thoughts go away and that I have not done any long term damage.

I quit cold after 4 months. I gained 10 pounds within the first few days off of it. Now with consuming only 800 calories and excercise have still gained weight havent lost a single pound . The issue my doctor said: my colon needs cleased from the meds. Today, he put me in a regimen of milk of magnesia every other day. i hated taking contrave. It kept my weight at a standstill like lost people that take it. There are other solutions after you are fed up by the complications of contrave. Good luck.

Thanks for the info Berwon. We did do a UA as a precaution and my practitioner did say that 4 of her 6 patients taking Contrave have experienced the same symptom. I had not been able to find it documented anywhere.
Thanks again!

Not to scare you, but after taking it for 8 months I was having insomnia and jumping/twitching while falling asleep pretty frequently. Especially in the last month. I was told by Dr and pharmacist no weaning off period is needex but I definitely had some sort of withdrawl..very dizzy all day to the point I couldnt drive, nausea and terrible headaches. That lasted 4 or 5 days and now I fesl perfectly dine. It is stored in the liver and takes time to detox depending on how long you took it. For me its up to 6 weeks. Hopefully you dont have those effects!
