Visine Lr Discontinued? (Page 37)
UpdatedHaving problems finding this product. Has it been discontinued and if so, do you know why?
The post ref FDA warnings doesn't address the fact that Tetrahydrzaline and Naphazoline are llisted along with oxymetazoline as a danger to small kids...but just about every redness eyedrop on the shelves now has those other two ingredients. How is that explained if Visine LR was pulled by Visine due to the FDA warning ? That theory doesn't hold water. The reason we can't find LR must have to do with the fact that the "miracle" O drug can't be obtained by the Visine company?
Occifer,
You know, I think it comes down to the almighty dollar at the end of the day. It has to do with money.
Visine LR had devoted consumers. It was the only eye drops many of us bought for years and years. So many products come onto the market today, and in no time at all, they are changed by the manufacturers. They immediately begin "snipping" away at the original product, removing ingredients, making them less effective, cheaper quality, cheaper to produce. Years ago, it seemed that products remained the same for generations.
The Visine brand probably takes in plenty of money for all their other ineffective eye drops that are bought by people who don't know better. Perhaps removing the oxymetazoline will "help" some of the other companies who may be lagging in sales. And Johnson & Johnson saves money by omitting the oxymetazoline.
Notice how most supermarkets and department stores carry certain products that others do not. They balance each other out somewhat. Walmart dominates and I'm sure it is not lacking in sales, but even Walmart won't carry everything. Sometimes you are forced to go to another store to get a particular product or food item. Then too, Walmart will carry things like poor quality fruits and vegetables and you have to go to another grocery store to get the higher quality fruits and vegetables.
I believe these companies work together in some ways.
A user (rtrsr) on another thread referred us to a compounding company willing to make the eye drops if you have a prescription:
"Custom Prescriptions of Lancaster
902 N Duke St
Lancaster, PA 17602
They do have a website
Ask for Andrea"
Other people have posted that they haven't received email responses from the company so I contacted them over the phone. They were very helpful. I can only imagine that there are other compounding pharmacies out there willing to do the same so I'd just start calling around if they won't ship to your area.
The Opcon-A eyedrops have started to work for me almost the same as the LR I keep reading everyones idea of why Visine discontinued the LR before I had posted my eye doctor found calcifications under my eyelids when I told her I used the LR she told me the Oxymetazoline in the Visine can cause this she wanted me to stop using I did not.I went back for my ck up last week the calcifications are gone. So this is why I believe Visine discontinued as I believed before. I think they will never admit it in fear of litigation, ect. That's JMO but makes sense if it was low sales no interest they would say so. I'm happy with the Opcon-A I don't believe any US manufacturer will add that to their eyedrops because of the FDA warnings. Just my two cents and I hope everyone here is able to find their effective alternative.
Reponse to post 702 Rich:
As others have mentioned, it is very easy to pop off the top of one of your used Visine LR bottles. I unscrew the cap, and push/pull to a side. The top dropper will loosen off. I do not touch the dropper, but rather leave it in the cap upside down on the table.........so as not to incur outside bacteria. Once the top is off, I use 1 drop of Afrin to 2 drops of Visine tears. Rather easy to count the drops as you are adding them to the bottle. I typically fill the bottle half way. Once done adding the two solutions, take the upside down cap (which houses the dropper), and screw back on. The dropper will re-seat back in its normal place. I then mix the two solutions (but do not shake). Once completed, your Visine LR is ready to relieve your red eyes. Again, I realize many are not willing to take the risk, however, I have not experienced any side or adverse affects. Also, I have not experienced any type of different feeling. One final note, I use Afrin original nasal spray 12 hour maximum relief.
"The post ref FDA warnings doesn't address the fact that Tetrahydrzaline and Naphazoline are listed along with oxymetazoline"? Then why does my first sentence make the statement "I can only imagine that the Oxymetazoline was having the most adverse effects (over the other two ingredients) when accidentally ingested."???
It is more than likely that J & J pulled VLR because it had major liability issues associated with taking the drug on a daily basis... IMO the reason it was discontinued was not because J & J can't obtain the "miracle drug" but rather because they don't want to obtain the drug out of fear of litigation. I can only imagine that they had their own private studies done after the FDA warning and we will never know the results of the evaluation! But hey if you think a multi-billion dollar company like J & J would discontinue a product that actually worked because they can't obtain the ingredients, while various other companies are currently using the same ingredient, then that's your opinion but it just sounds silly to me.
Hi Christina and Everyone,
For some reason I am not getting any notifications when people put a response on this thread so I didn't see all of your recent comments. It used to notify me before through my email address. Weird.
Anyway, yes, Christina in PA, I tried the alldaypils website to order the eyedrops from India. Personally, I would not recommend it. One day, I put the eyedrops in the cart. The next day, I got my credit card and tried to complete the order and the entire website had disappeared!
Also to VLR Lover, did the Customs Prescriptions of Lancaster, help you? Will they make a substitute eyedrop for Visine LR? They never responded to my email. I guess I can call them. However I have called different compounding pharmacies here in California without any luck.
Thank you everyone.
Hello Christina,
I too had a very strange experience on Alldaypils. I placed an order for Zoamet and filled out the form with all my financial information for payment. When processing the purchase it went to a final page that said "Press Accept" or something similar but there was NO BUTTON TO PRESS!!! My account on the webpage kept saying "order processing" but shortly after there was no record of my order at all!!! Nothing was ever charged to my account (yet) but ALL OF MY INFO IS OUT THERE SOMEWHERE AND I DON'T KNOW WHO HAS IT!!! BIG MISTAKE!!!
On the other hand Custom Prescriptions of Lancaster was very helpful... I was going to email them late at night then saw your post about them not responding so I decided to wait until morning to call to talk to someone personally. I talked to Jill and she pulled up a record that showed they previously made a formula containing .03% oxymetazoline back in Dec and then she checked and said they can make it for me now if I send them a prescription.
I have an eye doctors appointment on Monday. I only called a eye doctor because my PC couldn't take me soon enough. I expect everything will go fine during the visit and he should just prescribe the drops but I'm afraid of the cost... The original poster made a reference to the cost being high and Jill couldn't give me a price until I sent her the script. I don't know why she wouldn't price it but she did say that they could let me know the cost before making the product and that they could mail it to me when it is ready. I imagine I will pay what ever price once my VLR's run out so I'm just going to pay it now in order to try the different product so hopefully I can stop stressing about VLR being discontinued. I should know the price once I get the script and will post it for you... Once I get the product I will post a review.
Good Luck in your search!
There are so many scammers in society. I especially feel sorry for the elderly. When "some" people are desperate for money, they are willing to do almost anything to get it. All sense of right and wrong goes out the window.
Another thing to be sure about with these pharmacy companies producing oxymetazoline is if their websites are secure.
A few years ago, I attempted to place an order online with a well-known manufacturer, but an error occurred and the order didn't go through... supposedly. Then I immediately noticed the site was not secure, so I scrapped the order completely. However, just that quickly, someone got my info and charged $200 on my credit card.
Just wanted to let others know that the combo of Afrin and Artificial tears worked perfect for me.
I signed Christina's petition and was content to wait this out, but now I am on my last bottle of VLR so I knew I would need to try something.
Tried the BL Advanced Eye Relief Redness Maximum Relief and it worked but not nearly as long.
As far as the Afrin+Artificial Tears combo, I have had NO side effects and even though I didn't think my eyes needed the lubricant, this combo actually makes my eyes more comfortable. I did one part Afrin (12 hour, red and white bottle) to two parts Artificial tears. There is no sting and it works the same as VLR. I popped the cap off both products (wore gloves and worked in a clean environment) and poured out some of the artificial tears then added the Afrin. Waaa laaaa.
I am one that has bought nearly every brand at one time or another just looking for something that compares, and this truly is the easiest and most effective substitute.
I don't see how the heck the top dropper part comes apart from the main housing! anyway, did you try Opcon-A or any of these new 12-hour Clear Eyes products?
The tip is seated in place and is easily removed. I have been using Afrin with sterile water for inj..,USP (medical product for drug dilute use - ratio 1 Afrin: 3 sterile water) in my left eye and Visine LR (what I have remaining) in my right eye to see what works best. Both work as needed, left eye feels a bit drier. Maybe Artificial tears is better than sterile water? Still in the evaluation stage.
Hi Occifer,
It looks like the dropper bottle is all one piece, but it's not. The separation is at the bottom of the tip, right before the area with the horizontal swirls (for the cap to twist onto). You may not see it if your eyesight is poor, but it's there.
go get some Afrin nasal spray and mix it with Visine tears it works just the same
Just mixed my own drops with Afrin and Visine Tears. Fantastic!
The sterile water and afrin at a 3:1 ratio seems fine. My left eye is doing fine as is my right eye where I stille use the last of my Visine LR
Cshlego,
What type of Visine Tears are you using?
I am still a little leery of using nasal spray in my eyes :(
VLR Lover,
Did you ever get a prescription and take it to the Customs Prescription of Lancaster? If so, let us know how much it cost.
Deb,
Thank you for signing the petition. Last I heard from a Johnson and Johnson about a month ago, the representative they told me that there aren't any plans to bring Visine LR back. They also told me there aren't any plans to make another eyedrop with oxymetazoline. Johnson and Johnson would not give me a reason why just suggested I try their other products!
Visine Tears. there is only one. Blue lettering. I did half and half.
Cshlego,
Thank you for the response.
