At this point, I'd try any oxymetazoline eye drops as long as it comes from a reliable source and it's "safe."

I've been using B+L's Max. Redness Relief (and using my last bottle of Visine LR only out of necessity). Honestly, B+L is better than nothing, but it still can't take the place of oxymetazoline based drops.

Has anyone considered going to a local close out store (like a Big Lots) to see if some stock of Visine LR made it to their shelves? I went to one of my local Big Lots yesterday and my heart almost skipped a beat when I saw Visine boxes, but no LRs there.... but I'm letting you know I would have bought out the stock if I had found them. Just a thought for everyone

Given the following FDA warning that came out in 2012 (around the first time VLR seemed to vanish) I can only imagine that the Oxymetazoline was having the most adverse effects when accidentally ingested. It's a shame that J & J dropped the product rather than create a child proof cap!!! #boycott Johnson & Johnson

"FDA Drug Safety Communication: Serious adverse events from accidental ingestion by children of over-the-counter eye drops and nasal sprays

Safety Announcement

[10-25-2012] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public that accidental ingestion (swallowing) by children of over-the-counter (OTC) eye drops used to relieve redness and nasal decongestant sprays can result in serious harm. The eye drops and nasal sprays that have been involved in the cases of accidental ingestion contain the active ingredients tetrahydrozoline, oxymetazoline, or naphazoline.

The cases of accidental ingestion reviewed by FDA occurred in children 5 years of age and younger (see Data Summary below). No deaths were reported; however, serious events requiring hospitalization such as coma, decreased heart rate, decreased breathing, and sedation (sleepiness) have occurred. Ingestion of only a small amount (1-2 mL; for reference, there are 5 mL in a teaspoon) of the eye drops or nasal spray can lead to serious adverse events in young children. Most of these redness-relief eye drops and nasal decongestant sprays currently do not come packaged with child-resistant closures, so children can accidentally ingest the drug if the bottles are within easy reach.

To protect young children from ingesting these products, earlier this year the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a proposed rule* requiring child-resistant packaging for redness-relief eye drops and nasal decongestant sprays.

Data Summary

FDA identified 96 cases of accidental ingestion of products containing tetrahydrozoline, oxymetazoline, or naphazoline by young children, reported between 1985 and October 2012 to the Agency’s Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS and FAERS) databases and to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System – Cooperative Adverse Drug Event Surveillance (NEISS-CADES) database. The children ranged in age from 1 month to 5 years. Fifty-three cases reported hospitalization due to symptoms including nausea, vomiting, lethargy, tachycardia, decreased respiration, bradycardia, hypotension, hypertension, sedation, somnolence, mydriasis, stupor, hypothermia, drooling, and coma."

I think the (other) Christina may have looked into a website called alldaypills to order Zoamet from. Has anyone ordered Zoamet from this website before? Just doesn't look kosher to me and my spidey senses are on high alert. But my eyes are getting desperate as my supply of Visine is dwindling.

In addition. Fill an eye dropper bottle (15mL) ~ 75% with B&L eye wash. Fill the rest with regular Afrin. Outstanding. The eye wash is pH balanced and the lesser amount of the Oxymetazoline the better. White eyes all day. Single drop/eye. Unbelievable.
This was a personal experiment and only sharing this information.

The form to fill out is a form DHL is required to use (I spoke to the representative) but yes, I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed and am thinking it's not worth it.

I re-tried the Afrin (12-hour is all I can find) solution using 1 part Afrin and 3 parts Visine Tears. It's scaring me because it works almost too well. My eyes are super white but they feel a little too constricted...they feel weird. I don't know that I'll try that again. The second best option I have found is B & L Advance Eye Relief but just as others have said, it doesn't work quite as well and doesn't last nearly as long.

I just checked out alldaypill and it does appear you can order a minimum quantity of five bottles of Zoamet but I'm wondering if others have experienced the same regulation requirements/form that is required of me now through DHL.

Zoamet 5ml bottles are selling on ebay for $38.00+. I don't feel comfortable paying over $100.00 for 15ml of overseas eye drops. I'm just going to play it safe and stock up on the legit bottles of VLR while I can.

Has anyone tried mixing VLR with another formula to see if they can stretch a bottle out a little longer. I have managed to cut down to one drop of VLR per each eye and I'm getting the same results that I did when I used 3-4 drops in the past (when the supply was plentiful).

Just wondering if a 50/50 mixture of VLR and say Visine Advanced will have the same effect as using a half-drop of VLR in each eye.

If nobody responds then I will try this and post on the outcome.

The post ref FDA warnings doesn't address the fact that Tetrahydrzaline and Naphazoline are llisted along with oxymetazoline as a danger to small kids...but just about every redness eyedrop on the shelves now has those other two ingredients. How is that explained if Visine LR was pulled by Visine due to the FDA warning ? That theory doesn't hold water. The reason we can't find LR must have to do with the fact that the "miracle" O drug can't be obtained by the Visine company?

Hi Christina and Everyone,

For some reason I am not getting any notifications when people put a response on this thread so I didn't see all of your recent comments. It used to notify me before through my email address. Weird.

Anyway, yes, Christina in PA, I tried the alldaypils website to order the eyedrops from India. Personally, I would not recommend it. One day, I put the eyedrops in the cart. The next day, I got my credit card and tried to complete the order and the entire website had disappeared!

Also to VLR Lover, did the Customs Prescriptions of Lancaster, help you? Will they make a substitute eyedrop for Visine LR? They never responded to my email. I guess I can call them. However I have called different compounding pharmacies here in California without any luck.

Thank you everyone.

Hello Christina,

I too had a very strange experience on Alldaypils. I placed an order for Zoamet and filled out the form with all my financial information for payment. When processing the purchase it went to a final page that said "Press Accept" or something similar but there was NO BUTTON TO PRESS!!! My account on the webpage kept saying "order processing" but shortly after there was no record of my order at all!!! Nothing was ever charged to my account (yet) but ALL OF MY INFO IS OUT THERE SOMEWHERE AND I DON'T KNOW WHO HAS IT!!! BIG MISTAKE!!!

On the other hand Custom Prescriptions of Lancaster was very helpful... I was going to email them late at night then saw your post about them not responding so I decided to wait until morning to call to talk to someone personally. I talked to Jill and she pulled up a record that showed they previously made a formula containing .03% oxymetazoline back in Dec and then she checked and said they can make it for me now if I send them a prescription.

I have an eye doctors appointment on Monday. I only called a eye doctor because my PC couldn't take me soon enough. I expect everything will go fine during the visit and he should just prescribe the drops but I'm afraid of the cost... The original poster made a reference to the cost being high and Jill couldn't give me a price until I sent her the script. I don't know why she wouldn't price it but she did say that they could let me know the cost before making the product and that they could mail it to me when it is ready. I imagine I will pay what ever price once my VLR's run out so I'm just going to pay it now in order to try the different product so hopefully I can stop stressing about VLR being discontinued. I should know the price once I get the script and will post it for you... Once I get the product I will post a review.

Good Luck in your search!

I don't see how the heck the top dropper part comes apart from the main housing! anyway, did you try Opcon-A or any of these new 12-hour Clear Eyes products?

The tip is seated in place and is easily removed. I have been using Afrin with sterile water for inj..,USP (medical product for drug dilute use - ratio 1 Afrin: 3 sterile water) in my left eye and Visine LR (what I have remaining) in my right eye to see what works best. Both work as needed, left eye feels a bit drier. Maybe Artificial tears is better than sterile water? Still in the evaluation stage.

go get some Afrin nasal spray and mix it with Visine tears it works just the same

The sterile water and afrin at a 3:1 ratio seems fine. My left eye is doing fine as is my right eye where I stille use the last of my Visine LR

Cshlego,

What type of Visine Tears are you using?
I am still a little leery of using nasal spray in my eyes :(

VLR Lover,

Did you ever get a prescription and take it to the Customs Prescription of Lancaster? If so, let us know how much it cost.

Deb,

Thank you for signing the petition. Last I heard from a Johnson and Johnson about a month ago, the representative they told me that there aren't any plans to bring Visine LR back. They also told me there aren't any plans to make another eyedrop with oxymetazoline. Johnson and Johnson would not give me a reason why just suggested I try their other products!
