Viractin Cold Sore Gel

Updated

Why is Viractin so hard to find? Is it being discontinued and if so, why? I've used it for years in conjunction with Abreva for cold sores and I love it but it keeps getting harder to buy and I don't understand why when it's such a great product!

Viractin contains the active ingredient Tetracaine, which is a local anesthetic used to numb the area, topically.

I'm not finding any specific information, but it appears that the company that makes it might have discontinued it. It's made by Medibrands and they no longer list any information about it on their site and most online sites that listed it for sale say it is currently out of stock.

I don't know which one might be available in your area, but many products use a similar ingredient called Benzocaine, so you may want to look for something containing it or ask your pharmacist to recommend one.

Are there any questions or comments?

Benzocaine does NOT work as effectively as Tetracaine. At least for me. Viractin was the first treatment I have found to be 100% effective when used at the first signs of an outbreak. BRING BACK VIRACTIN!!!

I allso found Viractin to be the only highly effective cold sore medication...especially when used at first onset. Is it truly discontinued by the manufacturer? Tragic!

Viractin Rocks!!!! I found it online a few years ago and bought 4 tubes. It was a different company than the original that made it, so may have to search online.. will look again and let you know if I find it.

I've been looking. Please share if you find a source.

Please share any sources you can find. I have looked and looked to no avail. It appears it was originally manufactured by Cepacol, then last few bottles I purchased said they were made by Medibrands. Now I can't find it anywhere. I even tried a Canadian on-line pharmacy but all they did was take my order (and my $ ) and sat on the order for several months before I demanded a refund.

I ditto all the above comments! I thought I had found it with a Canada Co. , but they show "out of stock". I wish Cepacol or Medibrands would respond!

Please please please advise if you find this product. I have struggled with these all my life and nothing works. A co-worker of mine brought a tube of this in for me and I absolutely love it! The tube is dated 1997. I am online trying to find myself a tube of this stuff. If anyone has any further info please advise. Thanks!!

I had an allergic reaction to viractin (searched it to find the active ingredient so I know what to stay away from) so I couldn't care less that it is off the market, but I have to say the cure I have found for my cold sores is just putting a Q-tip that has been saturated with nailpolish remover on the site for 1 minute every 30 min or so as long as it is still tingling. If I get to it fast enough I only have to do it once. Haven't had a full cold sore in years now!

Wow - nail polish remover? How did you hear about that? Does it sting really bad? I'm afraid to try it.

I've suffered from these all my life and have done the same thing, that or perfume or running alcohol...apply it continuously, it dries it out...no blister :)

I went ahead and took Cori's advice and tried the Q-tip saturated in nailpolosh remover and I must say it works.. I sa a comment saying wow, nailpolish, I'm pretty sure it's not digestible - Cori never said swallow it, LOL Anyway, Thanks Cori!!

How many times do you need to apply nail polish remover with qtip?

You get a Q-tip and saturate it with nailpolish remover and appply it on the site for 1 minute every 30 min or so as long as it is still tingling. If u get to it fast enough you will only need to do it once or twice.

to sandra: some cold sores are due to constantly licking your lips so putting something on your lips that is not edible could be dangerous

I’d be you can take a bottle to your doctor and ask them to send a script to a compound pharmacy.

I appreciate all the suggestions for alternative cold sore treatments mentioned in this thread but the original concern still remains. Where can we find more Viractin? It is the only solution that 100% works for me.

Thank you for the information Sandra! I feel well armed now for the next attack :) Hopefully I'll never get another one but if I do I'll let you know if the nail polish remover works.

Dear Neicy, while I appreciate and understand what your saying. It would only be common sense to NOT lick your lips while you have something that is un-digestable on them. Lipstick, chapstick, abreva that is over the counter products that are not digestable but we do place them on our lips, right?? Thanks for your input and caution...
