Violent Reaction To Nitrofurantoin

I am 82 and had UTI from the 1st of April. By 16th April , not better, I needed to start on my third lot of Nitrofurantoin. That day I became very ill. My symptoms lasted three days and nights. Every joint was aching. My arm was as sore as if I had bumped it. I hadn't. It hurt to turn my eyes. I had trigeminal pains and my head was aching. I was being sick although I had an empty stomach.the frightening thing was I was shuddering so violently. my arms were jerking uncontrollably. I have never felt so weak and exhausted. The day I stopped taking the medication was the day those symptoms subsided leaving me totally exhausted and weak. How long will it take to get over this. I am taking my last doses of Pivmecillinam today and can tell that the Cystitis has gone , but I am so short of stamina now and tire with the slightest effort. Dorothy

Hi all! I need some serious help. I am currently on my travelling trip and have started in New York. I took 2 macrobid tablets for a UTI. 3 days later I am experiencing such awful head pressure, pulse feeling in my head, tingles down my arms and hands like someone is grabbing my nerves. I went to ane and they did a CT scan and eye test which came back fine (as I thought) and I am literally in bits. Waking up severely nausaus in the night with a throbbing head and I'm petrified. I'm thinking it might be IIH! :( feel like I'm dying!
I agree with poster, this stuff almost killed me.no need for something with that serious of side effects. Stay away, recovery is far worse than the UTI
I am very happy to report that after nearly a month I am now back to how I was before April 1st. The exhaustion lasted weeks but got gradually less. I am lucky that I am retired so had the opportunity to rest. I will never take this drug again.
Sadly after two days off medication the UTI is back yet again so I am still taking Pivmecillinam. Am being so careful when swallowing each tablet. I bury it in a large spoonful of natural yoghurt to avoid getting oesophagus ulceration nd drink a large glass of water. No bad results so far with this antibiotic. The fatigue is still with me. Really tired after mallets effort.
The fatigue and stamina loss could be side effects of both of these medications, according to NIH reports. You may also experience nausea, headaches, and diarrhea.
It may take a couple weeks for the side effects to fully clear up. How are you feeling, now? Has there been any change?
