It would be best not to change his dosage, without his doctor's approval. If he stopped the Keppra abruptly to switch, that could cause some withdrawal effects, which may include seizures.
It happened to my husband, when he first switch off of Keppra to a different medication and is generally nothing to worry about, unless they turn into full dangerous seizures. It usually just takes a few weeks for someone's body to adjust to the change.
The FDA lists the typical side effects of Vimpat as possibly including nausea, dizziness, being forgetful, lack of appetite and mood changes.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Do not take him off or cut down his Vimpat he will go through withdrawal I am right now but I was put in a hospital in the Neuro floor watch constantly I home now but still have some with draw symptoms
Re: Sherry (# 2)
Sherry, We are weening my mother off of Vimpat per doctor’s orders. What type side effects did you have as you were coming off of the drug? It’s so difficult to find information that is clear on the withdrawal effects. Thanks.
Currently weaning a 2 year old off of Vimpat.
Started 8/2017 @ 1ml (2×) per neuro's orders. We felt this dose was too high as my daughter is developmentally delayed and not walking or talking yet. We've weaned her down to .46 ml (2×). We started to wean .01ml/wk and then .02ml/wk. Even though she's on such a small dose, we'vae noticed some irritability with each dose decrease which is why we go "low and slow". I should also add that she's on cbd oil and has been seizure free since starting Vimpat, but has failed to progress cognitively and physically which is why we want to get her off. It also helps to supplement with sublingual b vitamin complex as Vimpat, along with Vimpat dose changes, can cause a deficiency here, which is often characterized by fatigue and crankiness.
For those who are taking cbd oil along with an AED, my advice would be to find your cbd "sweet spot" and stay there. Every AED dose decrease shouldn't be compensated by a cbd increase.....too much cbd can also cause problems. Cbd should also be taken 2 hrs apart from and AED, as it has been known to amplify the effects of some AEDs and reduce the activity of others.
