Vimax Porridge - Ground Oats (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

I am searching for Vimax Porridge, it is finely ground oats, also should come coarsely ground. I would be grateful if somebody could let me know where it is available.

Maybe it was processed differently. My mother rang Sanitarium when they discontinued Vimax and they told her that it was because the weevils loved it as well! They could not store it without it getting contaminated with weevils so it made it unprofitable to supply. People aren't keen on weevils for breakfast.

Thanks for the info Heather!

I just looked up weevils online (not knowing what they were) and I actually see these little bugs all the time when I'm out hiking. They like to hang onto all sorts of plants/tall grass. I certainly wouldn't weevil oats for breakfast either Lol!

Other oatmeal-related products don't seem to have this weevil problem, so you may be right about Vimax being processed differently.

Experimenting with a food processor may be the next best option.

Hi. I too used to prefer vimax porridge, being a kiwi. Since not being able to find it anywhere I thought out of the box and we now get rolled oats and put it through a coffee grinder. This makes it as fine ground as you want. Yummy!

Hi Busvet, that is all well and good, but does it taste like Vimax did? I cannot stand the taste of porridge yet i had no problem whatsoever with the Vimax.
Cheers

Hi
I just saw your queries about Vimax (a couple of years on!) but I also often wonder about it - and loved it as a child. I have no idea what happened - have you found anything? Or found an equivalent product? Yum

Well 2018 and i decided to see if i was right about the name of the porridge yip all these comments are great. I was the most fussiest kid ever and still at 52. But in saying that it was cause of the smooth texture as a kid. But since in Aussy now i tried a porridge with oats thinking yuk. But once you cook it. It really isnt to bad that oats dont stay hard. Then with my sugar and cream its yum. Toby oats traditional. Remember im real fussy and dont eat vegies either re the texture as a kid.

Yes, I liked vimax as a kid, the only porridge I would eat. It was wheat based and very yummy as I remember. More info please everyone.

I don't think vimax was an oats based porridge, I think it was roasted wheat and something else that gave it a nice nutty flavour and a nice texture. Recall having this as a kid sixty odd years ago. I think it was more expensive than other porridge as we only had it as a special treat now and then.

Hi... I am wanting this product too! Fond memories and want my grand daughter to have it, as it is what my kids had in the early 90's... I want it back!

I can solve your porridge dilemma! I loved Vimax way back in the 50’s & 60’s but this is what u do to get the same taste today. Mix wheat germ with normal porridge, a little more porridge than wheat germ. Yum!! Enjoy??.

Hi Jude,
I too came to the net to look for Vi-max porridge. I miss it and still think about it often. I’ve read all the comments and I think it’s possible it was made from wheat germ rather than ground oats. If it was made of oats then it would have tasted like the rolled oat porridge. I’m sure it's more likely to have been wheat germ as it has a nutty taste or is it possible it was bran based. Can anyone throw a bit more light on this please.

Yes, my mum used to buy it too in the 70s in NZ. It was delicious. I've tried to find it to no avail.

I loved it - I think a mix of ground oatmeal and wheat germ is very similar - I did make it a few years ago myself but I'm now trying to remember how

Hi Debbie, I have a CWA 1950 cookbook and it has a recipe for Lemon Beer. Would this be similar?

Does anyone remember the brand it was made under.
Elfin comes to mind but not sure if it was Vimax or just flour.

Ditto!! I think it consisted of finely ground oats. I loved it! Probably could recreate it in a nutribullet? I was reminded of vimax today when I tried ceres rice cereal. I think it has the same consistency.

I'd love to try that again...it's been about 40 years since I last had some.

Maybe the weevils were the secret ingredient that gave it that nutty flavour ??????.
