Venlafaxine Generic

My health insurance recently changed my Effexor ER to Tier 3--making it more than 2 times the monthly cost. Has anyone changed to the generic venlafaxine that is not extended release successfully? I prefer to not use non-US pharmacies. I can not find venlafaxine extended release as a generic option in the US--only the regular. Thanks for your help!

Would one manufacturer's brand differ from another manufacturer's? The pharmacy said it's all the same. They say the availability of the product is why they switch.
